Literally could not be more excited about this. I hope you will participate.

Twenty years ago the I Will Remember You Fic Marathon (IWRY) was born. Originated by Leni, then passed on to Chrislee, to Dark Star, and then Angelus2Hot, IWRY has remained the premiere event on the Buffy/Angel calendar and the centre of the B/A fandom itself.

This year we are hoping to mark these two decades of fan creativity and storytelling by making it the biggest IWRY in years. 

In this spirit, one of our team approached the current moderator to ask if we could join her in the running of the event. She did not feel this was necessary. We respect her decision and all the work she has put into keeping the marathon going these past years. We wish her nothing but the best with it now and in the future.

However, we believe IWRY is deeply rooted in our fandom as a collective and community experience. We want to create spaces and events where all who wish to participate can participate. It is for this reason we have decided to run our own I Will Remember You Fic Marathon.

If you are a writer or even just writer-curious, please put your name down and join us as we celebrate all things Bangel. We will accept any piece of fanfiction, of any rating, that is 500 or more words long and focused on the relationship of Buffy/Angel (and/or Buffy/Angelus). If drabbles are your jam, we will be happy to include those among the Another Minute bonus stories at the end of the event.

If you are neither writer nor curious, fear not! We would love to have you join in whatever capacity is best for you. Some roles to consider include:

Creating fanart, fanvids, edits, or GIFs

Supporting the writers with reviews & comments on fics

Taking part in our "Meet the Fandom" series

Helping us with the logistics behind the scenes

What are your thoughts on Cangel?

 Hi! Sorry, I’m late in answering this, I’ve been playing catch up! Cangel is my NOTP. Like N.O. in a big way. 

I can find absolutely nothing enjoyable about romantic Cangel as it was handled on AtS. I enjoy (but I don’t stan) non-romantic Cangel. The dynamic I enjoy the most on AtS is the Angel/Wesley/Cordy friendship (and of course the later Gunn and Fred addition but it gets tricky with the romantic angles). But I think the AtS “family” angle is what I enjoy the best. And I love the relationship of Angel as this lovable “big brother” to Cordy who pokes fun at him. 

But that being said, I’m not really one to buy the whole Cordy knew Angel better than anyone mantra in fandom. To begin with, there is no basis to the idea that Angel and Cordy were friends when he was in Sunnydale. They interacted some at the beginning of s2, she had ONE run in with Angelus, and then I can’t think of hardly any interactions they had after that. If Cordy knew about Angelus it was from hearing about it from the Scoobies (or seeing people around her die). She didn’t experience “first hand” what Angelus was capable of, his sadistic nature etc, the way that Buffy did. Cordy was an advocate for killing Angel once he was re-ensouled. That should give you some indication how not close they were to each other up to that point. So this line about Cordy and Angel being friends before they even started working together in LA, doesn’t work for me. Then in s1, Angel and Cordy slowly become friends. It’s not an instant thing. But in s2, after the first few episodes, Angel is so consumed by the Darla situation he isolates himself from his friends (including Cordelia) and Wes calls him out on not even bothering to get to know Cordy. So, it’s not until the magic of s3 that we are TOLD (not shown) that Cory and Angel have this amazingly close relationship and the audience is just supposed to buy it. Well, I buy they are good friends. I buy Cordy cares about him. But I don’t buy the “Cordy knows him better than anyone else” bullshit people try to sell. Please come and talk to me when Cordelia has seen Angel confess his past crimes - how he killed his parents and how he still struggles with his demon, come talk to me when Angelus stalks Cordy and threatens her mother, come and talk to me when Cordelia sees Angel is on the verge of taking his own life while he confesses his deepest darkest fears not just concerning his demon but those of the man. Then we’ll talk about someone who knows every single part of him. 

This isn’t a novel complaint. Many fans have it, even those who are not B/A fans. AtS tells but doesn’t show the Cangel build up backstory. Cordy is magically transformed into an over the top kind and compassionate person that oozes matriarchial vibes and she becomes #1 his biggest supporter (this is no coincidence as the Cangel relationship will invariably be tied up with Angel’s desire for a family for Connor and once that goes away Angel seems to lose interest in Cordelia romantically altogether). In s3 Cordy is this weird Angel cheerleader who constantly reminds him he is a hero, and a champion, and he is amazing, and continuously pumps up his ego. And as a viewer, I don’t respond to Angel’s love interest fawning over him and reminding him how much of a champion he is or telling him that there are no other people like “them.” Quite frankly, Cordelia’s influence on Angel in that regard is extremely unattractive to me. And then, Fred and Lorne decide that the two are suddenly “meant to be” and make up silly terms like Moira and Kyrumption. 

And let’s examine those terms shall we:

Moira: “Moira is the gut physical attraction between two larger than life souls.”

Hmm… where have we seen that?

Kye-rumption: “It’s when two great heroes meet on the field of battle and recognize their mutual fate.”

Gosh… and this one also…

just seems…

so familiar…

Honestly, why? Why do this? Cangel was never going to make a believer out of me. I don’t like Cordy enough for that. But Cangel could’ve made a believer out of many fans if it hadn’t literally tried to poorly rip off the B/A storyline, slap it on a pair of characters that just happened to be on the same show that had previously had NO romantic inclination whatsoever. Why do that unless you set the ship up to fail? I firmly believe this is a possibility. 

And in addition to the terrible writing, unfortunately, the relationship suffered from absolutely terrible chemistry. Like honestly, I could watch David Boreanaz make out with a wall and find that hot. But watching him make out with CC in WitW, and even worse Awakening, is painful. 

So ultimately, I’m relieved that this is a ship that never truly sailed. And I’m also glad that at the end of s4, Angel goes back to Buffy and declares that he is hers. And personally, I’d like to forget all about it.
