Final Reflection
This inquiry process was interesting. I personally have always enjoyed both writing and artmaking and often mixed the two together in my work, but it was interesting researching more about how the two relate for others as well. I read about various people and found some good (and some really bad) articles about the subject and just generally enjoyed creating the final product. The video I made was supposed to be an animation, but stop motion is very time consuming, so only a few sections ended up being animated. I enjoyed making it from drawing all the items, taking all the pictures, to editing the video together. I had a lot of difficulty recording the audio as my cats seemed to only make sound when I was recording... but I loved the whole process. I wish only that I started sooner so when life got in the way of me working on the project, I could have had it done sooner.

Future resources for art and writing research
1. https://renee-phillips.com/art-and-artists-statements-by-famous-artists/
This link is to a website that is a good starting point on finding specific artists with artist statements for examples, lesson plans, etc. This would be a good example of plain text artist statements.
2.https://mymodernmet.com/text-art-masters/
This link is to a list of artists that use words in their artworks. This is a great example of text work in artwork! This can be used to start further research into these artists and their work to be examples of words in art.
3. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ekphrasis
This link is to a wikipedia article on a word I never heard of before I began my research to provide a jumping off point for further research. This can be used as vocabulary for lesson plans, or as I plan on using it to further study writing and artwork relationships.
4.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_street_artists
This is a list of street artists as some graffiti includes words and phrases. This can be used as examples for future lesson plans, research, or explanations.
5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNmu8buHrm4
This is a youtube video of calligraphy, a writing style that itself is an artform. this is a relationship between art and writing I have not yet explored

Articles about the relationship between artwork and writing
Gaski, Harald. “More than Meets the Eye: The Indigeneity of Johan Turi’s Writing and Artwork.” Scandinavian Studies, vol. 83, no. 4, [Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study, University of Illinois Press], pp. 591–608, doi:10.2307/23343101.
https://www.jstor.org/stable/23343101
This article discusses a Sami author and reindeer herder named Johan Turi that is largely recognized for his book that discusses Sami culture, folklore, yoik (songs), and many of their traditions from raising children to herding. This book has been translated into various languages and was published in the early 1900s. Gaski is focused on the largely overlooked artworks Turi made for his book. Harald Gaski takes a close look at a few of the illustrations Turi himself drew to explain various ideas he presented. Influences on the artworks are also discussed such as the impressionists and defends Turi’s artwork from the critics that claim his artworks as simplistic and naive. One surprising thing Turi does as an author is leave his artworks without caption or labels. He assumed his artwork could stand alone and be understood, but his words needed images to be clear. This relationship is intriguing in comparison to the constant explanations and sometimes over explanations of artworks that leaves little for the audience to imagine or think about.
This text is moderately complex with sentences that connect together in a sensical way, but has many words and names without explanation as a knowledge base on the people, artworks, books, and culture, are somewhat assumed which make it bounce between moderate and very complex. For people who are not well versed in art history in Norway and surrounding areas, there may be lots of googling taking place while reading.
Student question: What makes an artwork complicated or simple/What makes an artwork experienced or naive?
Ogas, Adrian, "International Resonance in the Artwork and Writing of Jiro Takamatsu" (2020). Art History Theses and Dissertations. 5.
https://scholar.smu.edu/arts_arthistory_etds/5/
This theses paper focuses on post world war II Japanese artist named Jiro Takamatsu who created works in various styles including Dada, surrealism, and minimalism while also often merging them in his work. His career spans over forty years and had shows around the world at some of the most famous galleries. Ogas focuses on the themes, the seriality  and the questions Takamatsu focused his artworks on especially when involving scientific theories. The history of the World Wars is also mentioned due to the history between the United States and Japan and Takamatsu being a Japanese artist with gallery shows in the U.S. creates an understandable tension. This tension is largely due the American occupation in Japan, the Anpo agreement, and the economic relationship between the two countries, along with unmentioned history between the two such as various bombings and the Japanese internment camps in America.
The writing in this paper is very complicated as the sentence structures may be simple, but there is a very complicated vocabulary used in many of the sentences. These vocabulary terms are not defined and sometimes used multiple times and many sentences contain multiple complicated terms preventing definition guesswork based on context in some cases. There are many historical events referenced that are left unexplained or have minimal explanation that also make this text very complicated. The Japanese words used in the text are usually translated into English preventing this text from being extremely complicated.
Student question: How can one investigate an idea using art?/ How does one protest using art?
Evans, Chris. “Spastic Logic: Artwork as intervention in social relationships, formed in retrograde through writing”. (2018). University of Northumbria at Newcastle.
http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/id/eprint/42681/1/evans.chris_phd.pdf
This paper takes a look at the evolution of art and its relationships to ideologies and beliefs. It can be broken down into what makes art the way it is, how does art conflict with the ideas art itself is based in, and while ignoring some context for artworks, such as social hierarchy, and economy, the author seeks to look at the autonomous and the purposeful creation of art.
This paper is extremely complicated to read. The sentence structures are complex and Oscar Wilde’s writing style in length. There is very complicated vocabulary used constantly and unnecessarily that prevents clarity of the ideas the author is attempted to express. From my understanding, which is poor at best after attempting many times to decipher this, is that this author is attempting to look at the evolution and creation of art in a formalist perspective (which removes context of artworks such as the artist and their situation), but this is simply a best guess as this is so extremely complicated, I am struggling to even write a summary of what is happening in this incredibly long paper.
Student question: Reading just the beginning part of this paper, what do you think the author is trying to investigate within this paper?

I am currently looking into the relationship between art and writing such as writing taking the form of images, artists statements, art pieces with words/writing, etc.
I know that art and writing have a long history together including such art styles and mediums as arabesque and print making. Arabesques often include beautiful calligraphy of Arab words. Print making is not just an old form of printing books, but an art medium in itself. Many museums include artist statements or explanations near artworks such as information about the artist, the history of the piece, or other relevant information. Artist made statements sometimes include similar info, but also sometimes are themselves an artwork. Some artists seek to use their artist statements to bring clarity and explanation to their nearby works and other seek to bring more questions and broader ideas into the equation. I love this relationship between artist statement and art piece and how some artists play with this assumed relationship. The image above is an example of one of my own artists statements for a sculpture. This artist statement is also a painting and in itself a work of art. The words are all about how I feel about aerial silks, but are not straight forward or clear even in the order in which they are to be read.
I want to learn more about how artists statements evolved into the current version. Such as how statements next to art works started or when artists started writing their own statements to be displayed next to their work. I would also be interested to do more research into the relationship with art works that have words/writing in them and how the visual images relate to the words.

Hello all, This is the blog for Mr. Ren and as such I will be posting about art education with occasional posts about art, writing, or other related content. I am a new art educator and I hope to teach in a way that encourages my student’s individual passions for art! If I end up teaching elementary art, I want to introduce my students to a wide range of art materials and practices. If I end up teaching high school, I plan on teaching ceramic classes, but would love to teach other art subjects as well. I also included one of my own recent drawings so you all can see it.
