for today's prompt of MistyNat Week – early 2000's aus –, i have posted the first chapter of my mistynat x but im a cheerleader au :)

summary: Misty Quigley is not a lesbian — but try telling that to her parents, who just dumped her at the 'all-inclusive pray-the-gay-away' summer camp. Her plan was simple: play along and get the heck out. How hard could it be?

That is, until she meets Natalie Scatorccio: the resident troublemaker. She’s the kind of disaster Misty should avoid at all costs — the kind who snorts during the “Beauties of the Straight World” videos, the kind who leans in just a little too close when she teases Misty about being "such a good little straight girl". The kind who watches Misty in such a curious and genuine way when she thinks no one's looking.

Okay, so here is my clinical case paper on Natalie Scatorccio for a grad school assignment (yes, my 70-something-year-old professor must read all 15 pages about this girl)

I added some details that aren't in the show for the sake of the assignment requirements, but most of it is canon. This paper is written as if I am Nat's therapist and she's coming to me in the adult timeline like right after her most recent stint in rehab.

i’d tweet this but yellowjackets twitter is still the most terrifying place on the internet so i’m just gonna say it here and hope it doesn’t summon the wrong crowd!!

as a writer, i genuinely thought this was common sense & basic fandom etiquette but apparently it needs to be said: you do not offer unsolicited criticism on someone’s fanfiction/fan art unless the creator explicitly asks for it. (to be very clear: exceptions exist!! if someone’s writing/art is actively harmful, hateful, bigoted, etc. that’s a separate convo & not at all what i’m talking about here!!) if you don’t like someone’s characterization, their ship dynamics, the setting, the tone, whatever, that’s fine, you’re entitled to your own opinion! what you’re not entitled to is telling an artist how they “should’ve done it differently”, especially when that creator is just some person sharing their art for free (!!!) because they care about the story or characters. if that’s not your vibe, that’s fine!! scroll past it. mute the tag. OR, better yet, write your own fanfiction!!

anyway. this has been your friendly reminder that consensual critique is great, but unsolicited negativity is just bad manners and tearing down someone else’s work because it didn’t fit your personal headcanon is not constructive, but lowkey just mean & makes fandom less fun for everyone! :) if you’re that passionate about it:

there is so much in the yellowjackets universe that happens off screen, but one of the moments that drives me absolutely insane is that we never got to see the moment misty discovers that natalie almost killed herself on purpose…

this is the scene that nat tells everyone why she’s there. the camera never pans to misty except for this single shot with her in the background. and she’s smiling.

this is NOT the face of misty quigley when she discovers natalie’s attempted suicide. this isn’t just me being biased because i adore mistynat; this is a logical observation because it would literally so absurdly out of character for misty to smile at this information if she were hearing it for the first time.

now, i don’t know what misty’s reaction was—but considering the mini breakdown she had in natalie’s motel room when she thought nat had simply skipped town without saying goodbye, and the way she handled natalie’s actual death by being bedridden for six weeks in season three and the events that followed…well, it doesn’t take much to guess that misty most certainly didn’t take it well.

which makes me wonder…why in the fuck would misty quigley be smiling through this scene?? and what the hell could natalie have possibly told her after she’d found out for misty to be this okay with it??

since we don’t technically know laura lee’s last name, i’ve admittedly long since opted to call her “laura lee matthews” in my head. it’s what lottie would have wanted!!

(and as far as laura lee’s concerned, lottie’s wishes are basically god’s will, so…)

i audibly GASPED when i saw this in the mistynat tag!!! i’m so excited to read it 🥹

Misty knows there’s something different about her. She’s convinced herself before that her attachment to this squad stems from its coach—and he’s handsome, alright. The most handsome man Misty knows. But she knows the way her stomach fluttered and her cheeks blushed when Jackie Taylor gave her a Valentine when no one else would. She knows that Lottie looks pretty with her hair up and witnessing Shauna’s sheer physical strength as a base makes her knees weak.

But no girl has ever really… appealed to her so quickly.

So powerfully.

Natalie stops in front of the tables with her arms crossed, brow arched expectantly, like she’s unimpressed. Unimpressed with the Yellowjackets cheerleading squad. It’s such a novel concept, it makes Misty’s legs quake.

Jackie smiles at her politely. “Natalie S?”

“Just Natalie works, thanks.”

Jackie’s smile tightens.

Misty bounces on the balls of her feet.
