Thoughts on Anti and Dark
So because of recent events in both fandoms, I started thinking about Dark and Anti, and how I personally view them. Because there’s no denying I love both characters. And everyone always likes to compare them (which is completely understandable), so I started comparing them in my own mind. Comparing how they operate, what I find so terrifying about them, their personalities, basically everything. And I just kinda wanted to get my thoughts about them down on paper (or… document I guess). So here’s some personal thoughts I have about Dark and Anti.
(Prepare for opinions! Also, like I said I love both of these characters. Just because I might say one is stronger than the other, or scarier doesn’t mean I like the other any less. Remember that this is all MY opinion and thoughts! You can agree or disagree with whatever ^_^)
Anti
Ah, the Glitch Bitch. Such a fascinating character, especially of late as Jack continues to flesh him out. We were first introduced to the knife-wielding weirdo last Halloween when he slit Jack’s throat on camera before taking over. Wow. That’s quite the entrance. It’s disturbing and wrong and terrifying. And it’s made even more sinister by the glassy-eyed stare Jack gives the camera as he does it. So with his appearances leading up to and including Halloween, we learned several things about Anti:
1) He’s absolutely ruthless, cruel, and sadistic. He kills Jack for seemingly no reason other than he finds it fun or satisfying in some way.
2) He’s calculated, sneaky, and smart as hell. I know that often times the fandoms portray Anti as the cocky, sloppy, hyper-active, and boisterous newcomer in comparison to Dark (which I agree with to an extent; Dark’s character is based on the fact that he can manipulate those around him into abandoning their beliefs; his character and powers seem based in the psyche and mind as opposed to Anti’s more physical powers), but Anti can be just as tactful and deceptive as Dark. He hid messages in the tags of the videos, he appeared at specific times during gameplay because he wanted to give us hints by highlighting certain words or events.
And in my mind, he leaves hints for us because, again, it’s fun for him. He likes playing little games. Anti enjoys seeing us struggle to connect the dots, and laughs when we figure things out just a little too late, taunting us. He loves the attention we give him and he knows that so long as he keeps leaving a trail of crumbs, we’ll follow it. And that means he has control over us. Humans want closure and completion to any story. And yet, Anti is still an enigma for the most part. We kinda know what he wants, we kinda know his plan. But we’re still not 100% sure of anything! We aren’t even 100% sure of what Anti even is or how his powers work. Is he a demon? A computer virus or glitch? He seems capable of possessing people, travelling in time, and messing with electronics. But who knows what else he can do? All these “maybes” and questions make us want to know more, and so we keep watching (this is very similar to how FNaF became so popular- just enough clues and evidence to keep people interested in learning the entire story). We’re curious about Anti and that’s our ultimate downfall. You know what they say: curiosity killed the Jack.
In many ways, Anti is childish. He’s loud and brash, loves playing games, throws spectacular tantrums, and can often be surprisingly profound. And all of this is great! There’s a reason that creepy, evil children are a horror trope. I also think that this works great in regards to Anti being Jack’s dark persona. Anti and Jack are very similar, not just in terms of looks. Basically everything I said above about Anti being childish can be applied to Jack. But the brilliant part is how, even though Jack and Anti are so similar, they couldn’t be more different. Jack’s sometimes childish behavior is endearing. He’s often cutesy and excited, but can and will whine if something doesn’t go his way. His enthusiasm and energy are what many people enjoy about his content. And then when he gets into a pensive state, he says some really inspiring, and genuine things. Anti is the same way. He’s always teeming with energy, and his manner of speaking is very similar to Jack’s in that they are both a little silly and childish. He isn’t verbose, he’s simple and to the point. “Always watching,” “tired of playing pretend,” “there are no strings on me,” “I wonder what will happen to your favorite boy,” etc. All very simple, something you could absolutely see a child saying. But even despite his common vernacular, what he says can be profound. Just look at all the theories about what he says and how much each line could mean. Anti takes what is good and liked about Jack, and twists it into its worst self.
Let’s get into some of Anti’s symbolism, specifically eyes. Now, Jack has had eyes as a staple of his channel since forever, and Septiceye Sam has been the mascot for as long as I’ve known of Jack. But Anti takes this concept one step further. Not only do his eyes change color constantly, but he’s always been very focused on what eyes do. In his first full appearance, he mocks us for just watching as he took over and eventually killed Jack. He seems very interested in the bystander effect. We were the bystanders who noticed the weird glitches in Jack’s videos leading up to Halloween, but just sat and watched to see what would happen next. We were curious because we thought everything was a game, and that Jack was just doing something nice for the fans who created Anti. And while this is true in reality, it isn’t true in regards to the story that Anti is apart of. Because Anti is part of a story. All of Jack’s Egos are. So is Jack. And so are we.
This is one of the reasons Anti is so cool a character. Because we know he’s a character, and yet he can make things seem so real. Anti’s story has become very much like an ARG like Marble Hornets. Anti openly talks to us so that we become a part of his story. He says things to make us feel as if we can do things to help. He tells us that we’re just sitting here and watching, so we try to retaliate, to do something (ex. #septicsave). But while we may be a character, all we'll ever be to the other characters are a set of eyes. Whenever Anti talks to us, it’s pre-recorded. All we can really do is watch. We can try to do things all we want. In the end, Anti’s already done whatever he’s going to do in his story. He gives us a false sense of power and choice, when we really don’t have any. (Disclaimer: I know that Jack loves theories and suggestions from the community and often takes them into consideration when crafting the story around his characters. Again, in reality, we do have a choice and influence, but so far in the story, we don’t.)
And Anti also knows we’ll never stop watching. He seems to also like the concept of “seeing is believing.” Because the obvious answer to “beating” Anti is to stop watching. But then what? Will he truly lose? How can we know if we don’t watch? Unless we see him lose, who’s to say he didn’t complete his take over, his killing spree, whatever it is he wants? We would have to rely on faith and hope alone. And unfortunately, humans aren’t particularly adept at trusting what they can’t perceive with their senses. So in the end, we watch because we feel as if we have to. And we keep going round and round in circles.
And that’s why I love the concept that’s been floating around recently about how god damn interesting and horrifying the idea of a livestream where Anti tortures Jack is. A deep-web “red room”-esque scenario where the viewers tell Anti what to do to Jack. Not only is that just unsettling in premise, it’s horrifying because some people would actually suggest awful things (because humans are morbidly fascinated by the suffering of others). And again, the only way to stop it would be for everyone to stop watching. And that would never happen. Because if no one’s watching, who knows what Anti would do to Jack? Who's to say he wouldn’t just torture him without us watching? And then there will always be the people who want to see what Anti would do to Jack. So no matter what, Anti wins. And we just sat and watched.
I started writing this entire analysis a few weeks before the charity livestream, but I’m adding it in because holy fuck. Other people who are much more eloquent and concise than I am have already analyzed everything I’m about talk about, but I wanna get my thoughts out.
So. That was a fun time! I can’t even fathom how many people stayed up all night to watch those damn security cameras! I was one of the people who was up all night (I had finals and papers to write so I was up anyway), and I don’t think I saw the stream dip below 6,000 people watching. That’s insane that that many people stayed up for 20+ hours just to see what the hell was going to happen. By the time I fell asleep on Saturday, I had personally been awake for around 41-42 hours, and most of that was due to watching the streams to see what was going to happen. Anti managed to keep us glued to our screens for hours on end, stringing us along with little clips every now and again. And one of the most interesting things is that the majority of the footage wasn’t new content. Only the clips of Emma, Ethan, PJ, and Robin doing their spooky stuff was new. And yet we kept sitting there watching. Just the amount of influence Anti has over us is astounding! Again, a lot of the Overnight Watch stream connects with things I’ve already said. How do we beat Anti? Stop watching. But what if we miss something? So we keep watching. Circles. We sat by as eyes (security cameras) while we saw all this creepy stuff happened. Anti won BIG TIME. He was able to see just what lengths we’re willing to go to just for him.
So now that I’ve beaten how Anti operates into the ground, let’s talk about why he’s scary to me. Because he is. One thing about Anti is that he’s unstable and unpredictable with deadly mood swings. Anything that is unpredictable is nerve wracking because it plays into the fear of the unknown. Like I mentioned before, we aren’t certain about much of what Anti does. We’ve theorized and theorized until our theorizers are sore, but we don’t know much other than the fact that Anti killed Jack, and most likely Schneep. Even Anti’s movement is unpredictable due to his glitches. This is something that really unsettles me because I’m a visual person who likes to be able to keep track of things visually. For example, I’m also rather scared of bugs, but so long as I can see where a bug is, or I’m able to track it going around a room, I don’t freak out about it. But as soon as one buzzes past my ear without me seeing it, I get very startled and flinch HARD. So Anti’s glitching everywhere is also pretty unsettling for me as I can’t predict or track it visually. He also is more than willing to physically harm us as well. That’s another scary thing about Anti. He wields a large fucking carving knife and seems very ready to use it. Everyone has a pain threshold that they don’t want to cross. So Anti is also scary because he gives the very real threat of unbearable pain.
So for me, Anti’s scariness comes from a combination of his unpredictable nature and movement, his enthusiasm for hurting people and his propensity for causing pain. He also tends to have a slow buildup to a reveal. He drops hints for sometimes months at a time before he makes a full appearance. That sense of anticipation is also nerve wracking (it’s the entire basis for the thriller genre). For me, though, it actually makes it less scary because at least there’s some solid hints that something will happen soon. This isn’t to say these are the only reasons he’s scary (after all, he’s also pretty good at playing mind games like I stated before. But the types of mind games he plays don’t scare me; I just find them impressive and clever more than scary). This is just why he’s scary to me.
So that’s a lot of my thoughts on Anti. I think he’s a very cool character and Jack has taken him in a super interesting direction. Plus, the use of medium and the gimmicks and plot points he derives from his medium are a goddamn treat to theorize and write about.
Dark
The monochromatic monarch, the VHS Cunt himself, Darkiplier. Has this guy seen some development this year or what? From a weird emo roomate to a master manipulator, Dark’s Valentine’s Day reintroduction was quite the spectacle that I was not expecting (I mean, up until Mark called the horror show “The Dark Mark”). So, with the retooling of his character, what do we know about Dark now?
1) He’s a master manipulator and just “the worst.” Mark confirmed this during one of the charity livestreams where he discussed “A Date with Markiplier” in detail. He clearly says that Dark wants to use us and he’s not our friend. He will pretend to be anything we want him to be in order to gain our trust before throwing us aside once our usefulness has run out.
2) He’s a being from another dimension who just so happens to bleed into our dimension that does not follow the laws of physics, similar to Warfstache. He and Mark are two different people.
3) Dark is jealous of Mark’s success and accomplishments and wants to take them for himself.
As the year has gone on, we’ve seen that Dark has a rather large plan forming. He’s working with other Egos (especially Warfstache) in order to take control of the channel, as we saw in Markiplier TV (if we assume this is part of the “canon.” I personally do, but I know a lot of people have been questioning it lately).. And then the huge bomb that was “Who Killed Markiplier?” dropped to give us the origins of both Dark and Wilford. And from that, we also now know that Dark’s plan for a takeover is not just a result of jealousy and a lust for power, but also for revenge and retribution.
So in many ways, we know a lot more about Dark than Anti. We have the basic plan, backstory, and motive. But there is still a treasure trove of stuff we don’t know about Dark. We don’t know the total extent of his powers or exactly how they operate, and we don’t know his exact plan. Similarly to Anti, this ambiguity keeps us watching and theorizing.
But, with the reveal of Dark’s backstory, he now has another hook into the viewers that keeps our attention on him and keeps us easy to manipulate: he’s a sympathetic character. To an extent at least. Okay, so we all know he’s a master manipulator, a horrible person, and a villain. But a villain is only a villain in the eyes of someone opposing them. A villain is their own hero. And when you give a perceived villain sympathetic motivation, it can often change the way viewers look at that character. Dark’s motivation is reasonable. Anyone can see that he has reason to be angry. WKM!Mark destroyed the lives of the Colonel, Damien, Celine, the Detective, and the DA. The way Mark framed WKM’s ending, Dark becomes sympathetic. Because of WKM!Mark’s antics, both “halves” of Dark lost everything. Damien had his body snatched and lost both his best friends. Celine also lost her body and lost both of the men she at one point loved. Betrayal and loss of loved ones are two of the most effective ways to drudge up sympathy for a character because at some point, most people have experienced the pain of one or both. In this way, the viewers can now easily view Dark as the “hero” of sorts while Mark becomes the villain.
But giving a villain a sympathetic backstory can be very dangerous because it can give the villain one more way to manipulate the viewer. Mark has gone on record in his “I EXPLAIN EVERYTHING” livestream that Damien and Celine aren’t really their own entities anymore. The dark energy of the House combined the worst parts of them together along with itself to create a new being: Dark. Damien and Celine are no longer in Dark. Not as we knew them, anyway. And yet, I can guarantee you, if Dark ever felt it was needed, he would create projections of Damien and Celine to make it seems like they’re still in there. And they would reach out to us and gain our sympathy and trust. Reassure us that this is for the best, and that it’s all part of their plan. How they’ve missed us and just wish we could go back to the way things were before that dreaded poker game. And we would crumble. Dark would wrap us around his finger, make us care again, and trust him more. Because they were still there. It wasn’t just Dark. They weren’t bad people. We had to help them, had to believe them! After all, what do we always say? They deserved better.
Dark is a mastermind. Due to his manipulative nature, he’s always thinking dozens of steps ahead so that no matter the circumstance, those he wants to control will stay firmly trapped under his thumb. And this bitch will prey on anything to get what he wants. Any sort of weakness a person has, he will exploit. Heck, he’ll exploit their strengths, too. Dark, to me, is a people reader. He’s observed so many people and figured out how they operate. He’s figured out which people are most responsive to positive reinforcement, and those who are most responsive to negative reinforcement. And he’s content to observe. Dark is patient, while Anti can be more impulsive. Dark does not mind waiting and biding his time to make sure he is successful. There’s a reason he’s had fewer appearances than Anti (again, story-wise not logistics based).
Just like Anti and Jack, I adore how Dark and Mark compare to one another. Even though we know Dark isn’t exactly Mark’s dark persona, it’s really intriguing to see how Mark took that concept of his dark side and fleshed it out. Because again, Dark and Mark have very similar personalities and strengths. Both are very charismatic and are good at influencing people, extraordinarily smart, and emotionally driven (in many ways, including temper). But the way they use these gifts is how they differ and why it’s so interesting to observe. Mark uses his charisma and influence to better the world, whether it be through charity or simply giving people who may have given up a reason to live. He uses his intelligence and creativity to entertain millions and is always coming up with interesting ways to make what he does more successful (just look at the recent livestreams). In contrast, Dark uses his charisma to charm people into doing and getting what HE wants. He uses his gifts selfishly instead of selflessly. He uses his gift as an influencer to coerce people into doing horrible things (like shooting Mark in ADWM), and his intelligence lets him figure out how the human mind operates so that he can better control it. It’s such a cool concept to have these two people be so similar and yet they are completely different.
Okay, now, why is Dark scary to me? Well, as a said before, Dark seems to operate in the realm of the mind. We haven’t seen him pull anything particularly violent besides pulling a gun on Mark. Other than that, he’s been trying to manipulate us and others through our emotions and thoughts. As someone who has always taken pride in how sharp my mind is, it scares me to think that Dark could turn my own mind against me just by taking my weaknesses and words and twisting them to mean something negative. I don’t like being outsmarted, and I could absolutely believe that I would somehow talk myself into a trap by being outsmarted by Dark. I like to think that I would be able to see through his charade and not be bothered by his words, but I just don’t know. I’m only human and there are some very vulnerable parts of me that could be prodded to make me even more vulnerable. And while I don’t think I wear my heart on my sleeve, I don’t think I hide my emotions well, and Dark will take whatever he sees and attack with it. Another thing about Dark is that there is still so much that is hidden about him. We haven’t seen enough of him in action to determine much. It seems he’s acting on the horror concept of “the less you see the monster, the scarier it becomes.” And god damn has that been executed well. We’ve only had extended exposure to Dark in ADWM. All other appearances have been quick cameos where we get a better sense of his personality, but not much else. Again, him biding his time has proved very effective. He proved he was a threat before disappearing into the shadows to watch everyone worry themselves into a tizzy. We’ve seen a snippet of his power, but who knows what else he’s capable of? That’s why there are so interpretations of him. He takes on the powers and forms we are personally most afraid of. He’s become the monster in the dark. He’s a looming menace which has always scared me. The last thing that scares me is that I can see parts of myself in him. I’m prideful and I have quite the temper when pushed far enough. I’m ambitious and my thoughts can be viciously vengeful. I think back through my life and wonder how much in my life would have had to occurred differently for me to become a manipulative piece of garbage (hint: less than you would think). And that’s a horrifying thought to me.
So Dark is scary due to his intelligence, his ambiguity, and the fact that he’s realistic enough that I see characteristics of myself in him. Dark’s appearances also don’t have the build up that Anti’s have. We get an occasional hint or two, but they’re subtle enough that it makes us question whether or not we’re looking into things too much. Then out of nowhere, an appearance happens and the entire fandom is sent reeling. I think the most build up we’ve gotten for Dark is the week long clue hunt the led to Who Killed Markiplier?. And that wasn’t even built up FOR Dark. This more guerilla warfare style of appearances is much more effective in scaring me because it leaves me feeling nervous all the time. Between Anti appearances, I’m able to calm down. But because of the suddenness of Dark’s appearances, I’m always high strung wondering when, where and how he’s going to strike next. Because I can “feel” him watching, calculating his next move, but I can never figure out where he is to prepare myself for the next appearance. So for me, it more effectively scares me as I feel more of a loss of control.
And that’s a lot of my thoughts on Dark! He’s very much the style of villain I’m drawn to, so I have a lot of fun theorizing about and analyzing him. I love that Mark embraced this character and made him his own because he’s made a very formidable and compelling villain! And I can’t wait to see where this story goes next and how Mark will burn the fandom down next time!
#antisepticeye#jacksepticeye#darkiplier#markiplier#analysis#again just my opinions!#but ive been thinking about the dark boys a lot lately#And i thought others might be interested in seeing how people view the characters

THE EGOS STAR WARS AU
Inspired by @reverseblackholeofwords comparing her version of the Host to Yoda. I... may have gone a little bit overboard at first and then got reeeeaaaally lazy as I went on ^_^’ Tbh, my Star Wars knowledge isn’t super extensive (I know the most information about the Jedi and Sith, and not a ton about non-Force users), but I tried my best!
Many of these ideas are based on Reverse’s interpretations of the Egos! Please go check out her writing if you don’t know her. She’s amazing! Some ideas are based off my own interpretations of the Egos, so if something doesn’t match perfectly with Reverse’s universe, that would be why.
And now...
STAR WARS- EPISODE YOUTUBE, ATTACK OF THE EGOS
Starring the Iplier Egos!
Darkiplier
-Sith Lord
-Incredibly strong Force abilities
-Less adept with his lightsaber (which is normally dark red, but will occasionally flash blue, or purple when connecting with another saber or blaster bolt)
-Has two Force ghosts (Damien and Celine) that he has bound to himself to increase his power (check out the “Sith Inquisitor” quest line from Star Wars: The Old Republic for more information about this concept)
Wilford Warfstache
-Smuggler, armed to the teeth with blasters and vibroblades
-His favorite blasters are his DT-29 heavy blaster pistol, his Model J1 "Happy Surprise" Palm Blaster, and his X-30 "Lancer" target blast pistol
-Has some Force abilities, but its use is rather unpredictable and chaotic
-Flies a Class 720 freighter
Bim Trimmer
-Newly initiated Jedi Knight/Force sensitive individual
-Unbelievably strong untapped Force abilities that he either doesn’t know how to use or can’t fully control
-A very average lightsaber duelist, his lightsaber is a blue-green
Dr. Iplier
-Medic with an engineering background
-Actually quite competent and has invented several more effective stimpacks
-Also able to repair droids
Googlepliers
-Re-purposed and malfunctioning assassination version Protocol droids (similar in personality to HK-47 from KoTOR)
Blue: Base model, most balanced; most able to control his secondary objective
Red: Aggressive model, strongest; most likely to activate secondary objective
Green: Knowledgeable model, answers questions fastest; most likely to malfunction
Oliver: Diplomatic model, most organic; most likely to physically break
The Host
-“Old” Jedi Master
-Concealed in his cane, has a golden lightsaber that he rarely uses
-A strong Force user, but especially adept Jedi Seer
-He lives in isolation somewhere in the Mid Rim. Some believe he lives on Kashyyyk, others Naboo; in reality, he lives in a library deep in the mountains of Naboo
Ed Edgar
-Bounty hunter
-While not a Mandolorian, he managed to scrape up some Mandolorian armor and weapons that he uses in his main arsenal
-He says his ship is of a Corellian-make, but its specs are unknown, so most people he tells that fact to think he’s lying (but the ship is in the Corellian style, so no one’s been able to prove him wrong yet)
Silver Shepherd
-Low-ranking officer
-Equipped similarly to an Imperial officer
-Most of the time, wears his battle armor
Yandereplier
-Assassin/bounty hunter
-Mostly works on their own for their own purposes

Dr. Henrik Schneeplestein
-Medic, famous for prosthetic work
-Slightly shady business practices (known to help criminals), but generally considered a good doctor
-Also managed to create a serum that can temporarily weaken Force abilities; the exact length of time it weakens for is dependent on dosage and how Force sensitive the individual is
Jackieboy Man
-Heavy-weapons trooper
-Similarly equipped to Imperial heavy troopers, specializing in melee combat, with armor that provides light resistance against lightsabers
Marvin the Magnificent
-Light-side affiliated Force user (NOT A JEDI)

Okay, so I finally got time to just sit and listen to Mark’s explanation of WKM, and I figured I’d revisit this post to see if everything I had questioned was answered! So let’s go! (Once again, this will get long, so everything is under the cut):
-Why couldn’t Celine and Damien do anything in Mark’s dead body, but could in our “dead” body? Did we really die? Or does it have to do with the fact that we willingly let them in (while Mark may have tricked them in order to get a body)? Or does the “transfer” process always trap the body’s original soul somewhere regardless of whether or not the transfer was done with permission?
Mostly answered! Our body was used because… convenience basically! Our body wasn’t NEARLY as broken as Mark’s and so it was the best option for Dark to take over.
-”He’s been planning this for years.” This line makes no goddamn sense to me. Mark’s been planning on stealing Damien’s body FOR YEARS??? He’s been planning on being murdered just so he could possess Damien’s body? WHAT!? WHY!? Is Damien even talking about Mark??? Context says yes but the pronoun game is fucking me over…
Mostly answered! Mark mentioned that the house is similar to a concept from Warhammer 40k about this world of chaos and pure emotion where intelligence can develop and affect us in our world. It can influence you by whispering in your ear about “That’s not fair, you’re right. Why do they deserve to be happy? Maybe I should do something about that.” And why did Mark take Damien’s body? Well, Celine coming back threw a wrench into his original plan (which was to frame the Colonel for his death, somehow take the Colonel’s body and take revenge on him in that way AKA his plan wasn’t very well thought out and was derivative of his irrational, emotional frenzy). And because of this, the intelligence- that is the house itself- suggested to Mark that Damien was a better body to take so that Mark could get out of the situation without any consequences and also be in a seat of power.
-Why were BOTH Celine and Damien trapped in Mark’s corpse??? If we follow the theory that Mark is running around in Damien’s body, why was Celine pushed from her own body? You would think that if Celine facilitated the transfer of Mark to Damien’s body (purposefully or not), she would still be in her own body. But the scene of her and Damien suggests otherwise. So she had to have been pushed from her body somehow. Or the vision of Celine and Damien isn’t completely real… And either Celine or Damien wasn’t trapped and their image was only being used to gain our trust.
This one was… sorta answered. So! I don’t think Damien and Celine were necessarily trapped in Mark’s body like I originally thought. They were just stuck in this in-between place with Mark’s body. I don’t know how the body got into the in-between, but it’s there. Damien and Celine are in the seer room together, just the two of them. Everyone else is outside or in their own room. Celine tampers with something very dark and evil outside of her control and ends up possessed. Celine did not kill Damien. So all I can conclude from that is that that moment is when Mark took over Damien’s body, pushing the mayor out into the in-between place we see later. Whatever possessed Celine might have pushed her out of her body, or her body couldn’t handle the possession and broke down, I DON’T KNOW THAT WAS SOMETHING I WAS STILL CONFUSED ABOUT. The vision of Celine and Damien wasn’t completely “real” in a sense. Mark said that the image by mrkmooautumn that he tweeted out was the most accurate way to describe what was going on. And in that picture, Dark (as we know him) is puppeteering doll versions of Celine and Damien. So it may or may not have been their “souls” that were talking to us, but it was Dark manipulating their souls or images to gain our trust (which is what I suspected since the beginning).
-The end of Chapter 3 suggests that SOMEONE (be it Mark or Damien) was in Celine’s body with her (she had the red and blue aura). If that’s true, then what happened? How and why are they in Mark’s corpse? There seem to be a few answers here: 1) Mark never used Damien’s body but instead used Celine’s, pushing her out of her body into Mark’s corspe. But then where the hell is Damien’s body and why is his soul trapped in Mark’s corpse? 2) Mark immediately jumped into Damien’s body, pushing Damien out into Mark’s corpse. But then where the hell is Celine’s body and why is her soul trapped in Mark’s corpse? 3) Mark used Celine as a host briefly, pushing her soul from her body before jumping into Damien’s. But then why would both Damien and Celine be trapped in Mark’s corpse? Wouldn’t that mean that Damien is trapped in Celine’s body while Celine is in Mark’s corpse? 4) The same scenario as (3) but Mark is somehow able to push both Celine and Damien into his corpse (or the process forces Celine, the conduit, out of her body into the corpse as well because “magic”; just assume that that’s how these occult forces work). That still leaves Celine’s body empty and available for Celine and Damien to inhabit, unless it somehow got destroyed in the process (which could have occurred, but this entire scenario seems like too much coincidence as to why they need OUR help). So there’s another missing body besides Mark’s (unless (4) is true, in which case, I hate occult magic convenient bullshit…) that is just uninhabited for seemingly no reason. Damien mentions that our “body, broken as it may be, is still out there.” This implies that Celine’s and Mark’s bodies aren’t “out there” anymore. So where did they go? Why US?
Again, mostly answered. Something possessed Celine (NOT Mark or Damien), and whatever that something was may have pushed her from her own body. Therefore, something else might very well be piloting Celine’s body, which is why she couldn’t bring herself and Damien back into her body. Mark is in Damien’s body. And Mark’s physical body seems to be in the in-between somehow. So there are no bodies available except ours. It isn’t ideal because it is broken, but it’s better than Mark’s mutilated body.
-The only explanation I can come up with for why Celine and Damien wouldn’t be able to use Celine’s body if it’s still around is that Celine needs two souls to do any of this transferring, she can’t transfer her soul anywhere and you need the body’s original soul in order to make the body work (this would explain why they couldn’t use Celine’s or Mark’s body, but could use ours; but it wouldn’t explain why the camera doesn’t follow Dark in the end if our soul is still in there; it also doesn’t explain why Dark has his red and blue aura, which is implied to be Celine and Damien’s souls coexisting to create “Darkiplier” if Celine’s soul isn’t transferred to our body, unless we become the red of Dark’s aura; this still doesn’t explain why the camera doesn’t follow Dark; it also wouldn’t answer why Damien could still pilot our body if he traps our soul in the mirror (unless the camera not following Dark has NO significance whatsoever and was just for dramatic effect)).
This entire bullet point is meaningless. Whatever may have been left of Celine and Damien at this point seem to have already fused with the energy of the house to create Darkiplier, and we are left trapped in the mirror at the end thanks to this amalgamation pushing us out of our body.
-”Mark took everything from us in his twisted quest for vengeance.” Okay, from other theories, Mark is seeking vengeance against Colonel William for… presumably sleeping with his wife (who may or may not have been Celine). But why would he betray Damien in the process? Why couldn’t he have just used Celine’s body? And why did Mark need Damien’s body to get vengeance on William?
Okay, this all got answered. Mark wanted to take revenge on William and Celine for running off together. He creates this plan to get his revenge and dies. Then Celine shows up to the house, throwing a wrench into Mark’s plan. The House’s energy and whispers convince Mark to change the plan and go for Damien’s body instead because he’s be in a position of power, and get away scott free while the Colonel is ruined because he gets arrested for murder.
-”But death does not mean the same thing here.” Then why didn’t you to take Mark’s body the same way he took Damien’s, or how you send us and Damien back to our body? Why do they need US? Our body is just as broken and dead as Mark’s… why can we come back into our body? Damien says that he and Celine were left with Mark’s broken shell (which I’m assuming is his body). If the body is in the Void with them, how did it get there? And why is that body not usable?
Mark’s body is fucked up. Ours is less fucked up. It’s a matter of convenience. Still have no idea how the body got into the in-between, though.
-”You’re trapped in here just the same as us.” How did we get trapped? Celine says she brought us to this.. Void, right? Is “here” the house or the Void? If it’s the Void, then Damien is lying (or at least conveniently ignoring the fact that we wouldn’t be trapped there if Celine hadn’t purposefully brought us there; that we didn’t HAVE to be apart of this mess at all except that Celine and Damien wanted to use us in THEIR quest for vengeance; we could have just died, maybe to haunt the house, or maybe to slip into oblivion).
Basically, the House keeps us there. It doesn’t let people die, but instead traps them in the in-between for a while before resurrecting them. And remember, the images we see talking to us are being controlled by strings. So in a way, someone was lying. Celine didn’t technically bring us there. Dark did.
-”Mark is not the only one who can use this place to his benefit.” How did he even find out about the Void??? How did he learn to use it??? Is there someone or something else at play here? Was Mark colluding with someone or something else in his quest for vengeance? Another entity- a fourth party if you will- would be the best explanation to all of my questions, tbh.
AND THERE WAS A FOURTH ENTITY! It was the House! The House whispered ideas to Mark and that got him thinking. Mark may have killed himself at one point, but when he didn’t die, he started experimenting, killing himself over and over to reach the in-between in an attempt to understand it. And it worked to an extent. He learned how to survive in there long enough that he was able to wait until Damien’s body was able to be possessed.
-”But you can’t survive on your own… you’re dead after all.” If you can’t survive on your own after death, you obviously need someone else with you to keep the broken body alive. At least that’s what this line seems to be implying. But then what was stopping Damien and Celine from entering Mark’s dead body (or Celine’s dead body if she’s dead) since there are two of them? The only two explanations that I can come up with is that, one, we weren’t dead (which can be supported by the fact that something akin to a heartbeat can be heard in the background of this entire scene as others have pointed out). We may be dying, but we aren’t dead and maybe Celine and Damien needed a living body in order to come back. This would mean that Damien is lying to us. Or Celine lied to him. And if we weren’t dead, then again, Celine and Damien trapped us there with them in order to use us. It may have saved our life, but it doesn’t seem to be for purely altruistic reasons. Sure they may have felt bad that we were dying, but in the end, they could use it to their advantage in order to further their own agenda. Or two, we are dead, but again, Celine can’t transfer her own soul into a body. But again, that wouldn’t explain why Dark has his red and blue aura, unless we became the red part. But then, if we were left in the mirror, wouldn’t that mean only one soul is inhabiting our broken body? Then Damien would be lying again.
I believe this is just a bold-faced lie from Dark. Mark could come back to his own body after killing himself many times, seemingly without help. We didn’t NEED help, but Dark made us think we did. Bringing us to the in-between was definitely not altruistic, even if it did save our life. However, say that Dark is using Damien to tell us the truth. The reason Dark can stay in our body and not die is because he’s a monstrous combination of three entities. There aren’t technically alone. Or even if it’s three entities fused into one and it counts as one “soul,” it’s a strong soul with supernatural properties thanks to the House.
-”But I know that I trust Celine.” I DON’T! She has done literally nothing to earn my trust. She’s the character I am most suspicious of (although it’s a pretty close race between her and Mark… and as much as I want to believe Damien, and believe that he’s been lied to, too, and is just another piece in this game, just as manipulated as we’ve been… I think he might be just as suspicious as Celine and Mark. And I unfortunately think that William’s happiness and sanity and our life were just collateral damage in all of this).
This… was pretty close to correct. Wil’s sanity and our life were collateral damage. And I do believe that Damien was manipulated like us- to an extent. Once Mark took his body, I believe his anger overtook him and when Dark manipulated us into letting him in, I don’t think Damien’s part of this amalgamation felt any remorse. As Mark said, Damien thought it was the right thing to do. But all villains think that what they are doing is right. And unfortunately, Damien’s anger dragged him into villainy.
-”I won’t force this on you; you have a choice here.” Do we, Celine? Do we really? Just like Dark gave us a “choice” of four options (all of which led to him)? Because it seems to me like the only other choice here is perma-death. And it is unlikely that in a situation like this that someone would choose death over life. This is such a manipulative thing to say here.
Again, Dark is saying this through Celine. We didn’t have a choice. I don’t doubt that the House could keep someone in the in-between indefinitely until they are so insane that they would beg to go back. We have to be sent back to our body. We can’t just go back. Something has to allow us to be sent. So yes, this was a manipulative thing to say. Life was not ours to choose anymore. Dark made the choice for us.
-”Just know that this is the only way you can escape!” THE ONLY WAY WE CAN ESCAPE HMM??? JUST LIKE THE ONLY TWO ESCAPE OPTIONS IN “A Date with Markiplier” (”FREEDOM” and “ESCAPE”) LED STRAIGHT BACK TO DARK??? AND ONE OF THEM IS A FUCKING LOOP THAT DARK CREATES HIMSELF??? Once Celine brought us into that Void, there was no escape. Not really. We were at her and Damien’s mercy. If we refused, we died. If we accepted, we lost our body. Either way, we lost. It was more of a choice of whether they lost, too (and I have a feeling that Celine and Damien could have just taken our body had we refused, too… they just wanted our permission in order to keep us trusting them… in order to manipulate us to distrust Mark).
I can’t say this point was “answered” but I think my analysis is still pretty solid. That entire scene in the in-between was meant to manipulate us into trusting Dark’s plan. And we couldn’t escape. The House wouldn’t have let us. And I do think Dark was able to take our body whenever he wanted. It was just an empty shell at that point. But he wanted us to trust him, and hate Mark, to cast doubt on him. And I believe that even though Dark trapped us in the house, we still hate Mark more than him. Because Damien just wanted what was best for us, right? So maybe being stuck here is for the best. We have to trust Damien, right? But Damien didn’t push us out to save us. There is no Damien anymore. Only a facsimile controlled by a madman.
-”<coughing> Colonel… <more coughing> If you can hear this… you better run.” …Why is Detective Abe- THE PERSON WILLIAM SHOT IN COLD BLOOD- warning the Colonel to run in the end? From whom/what? And why the hell does Abe care what happens to the Colonel WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO MURDER HIM?! Especially when he and the Colonel seemed so hostile towards one another for the entire series??? I get it, good people do bad things, so Abe may have been being a good person and warning William about something despite all that he’s done. But it seems a little out of the Detective’s character… unless he saw something that disturbed him so much that he was willing to forgive the Colonel and warn him of something coming to hurt him. And the only two people who I can assume could be coming to hurt the Colonel are Dark and Mark… Or Abe isn’t warning him at all… and is threatening him instead.
Yeah, this wasn’t answered at all. I still don’t know what was up with that phone call. I GUESS WE’LL WAIT AND SEE!
So, my conclusion?
Dark played us all like a goddamn fiddle.
More WKM Observations/Questions
Okay, so ever since the final chapter of WKM dropped on Friday, I’ve been… uneasy about many aspects of the ending. Something didn’t feel right… And so I’ve been watching it over and over… and over and over and over again to try and figure out some of the things that just seem… odd to me.
Unfortunately, I didn’t find many (if any) answers. However, I did come up with a plethora of questions that I thought the community might be able to answer, or at least come up with some theories about (this is very long, so everything is under the cut):

A Dangerous Game (Part 2)
Warnings: Violence and language
“I closed my eyes for one second, and you tried to betray me?” That voice rooted me to the spot. Tendrils of ice lanced up my spine as the subtle clack of his shoes closed in behind me. The pen in my hand trembled, hovering over the scrap sheet of paper on my desk. I didn’t look up. I should have. I should have made some show of defiance or asserted control. But the heat was leeched from my body as he pressed his chest against my back and my thoughts and courage shattered leaving me staring blankly at the black ink.
The ringing sound that always accompanied Dark’s presence never left me, even when Dark himself did. It softened, perhaps. Sometimes it didn't. I barely paid attention to it most days. But it never left. The shrill tone hadn't left my ears since I shook hands with this demon. And now it melded with his low hum in my ear to create a sound even more grating than the ringing alone as he read what little I had managed to write. “I suppose you thought you were being clever.”
“I had to try something,” I said, surprised to find my voice even, if a little quiet. Dark’s hand snaked around and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. The entity always felt cold to the touch. But I had discovered early on in this “partnership” that he had control over just how cold his skin could be. And when his finger brushed my ear, his aura infected my skin and I flinched away with a gasp. My ear burned. Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as the initial heat faded into a searing cold sensation. My hand flew to my ear. The skin felt taut. I realized too late that in my attempt to get away from Dark’s touch, I had spun around to face him. He slammed his hands on the desk, trapping my body between them. I curled inward to avoid another brush with his frostbitten touch, but the noise startled me into looking up. He appeared to be trying to maintain his composure. But the echoes of his rage flickered around him in a storm of anger as he glared at me.
“Remind me of the details of our little agreement,” he hissed.
“I'm to do whatever you ask me to do,” I started, “and in return, you let me save Mark… and live.” Dark let out a small rumble of affirmation as his eyes locked with mine. The black irises felt unnatural and flat. Nothing reflected off of them. They consumed light. I hated them for how much they reminded me of Mark’s, but how cold and twisted they were in comparison to the warm brown ones that were constantly crinkled from his smile. But no matter how much I hated looking at them, whenever our eyes met, I could never tear myself away from Dark’s haunting gaze.
“What else?” I swallowed as his face inched closer.
“And that you would give me anything I ever needed or wanted. But that I can't tell anyone about our agreement.”
“Correct,” he said. “And what did you find out when you first tried to escape our arrangement?” Dark’s monochrome began to bleed apart into red, blue and green echoes of his body, and the ringing only intensified as our noses nearly touched. I opened my mouth to respond, but no sound came out. My heart hammered against my chest as I tried to force my voice to work. But the lump of panic in my throat choked me. Dark gave a predatory smile as he gently twirled a lock of my hair around his finger.
“I do not mince words,” he murmured. “And I choose my words wisely, unlike most humans. Especially when I make a deal. I said that you cannot communicate my name or intentions to anyone.” I struggled to breathe. His anger emanated off of him in all-engulfing waves, and yet he remained poised, smiling saccharinely at my labored breathing. He was revelling in watching me squirm. Dark reached behind me and drew up the note I had been so desperately trying to write. “Would you care to read this?” I stared at the paper for a second and swallowed.
“M-Mark,” I breathed. “I’m sorry. I’m so, so s-sorry. I’ve tried to tell you so many times now. But I can’t. I try to form the sounds, and I choke on them. But just maybe, I can tell you this way. Exploit a loophole. Mark, it’s-” Nothing was legible after that point. The only other mark on the page was a scribbled out line. The beginnings of a “D” that I had struggled against some force to write, buried under ink as my hand disobeyed the orders from my brain. Dark’s smile fell as I turned my head away from him and the note, ashamed. Ashamed that I couldn’t tell my friend about the power Dark had been amassing to take control and ruin him. Ashamed that I didn’t get away with the attempt. And yet a small spark of anger flickered at the edges of my fear, and I relaxed slightly despite Dark’s overwhelming aura. His gaze burned as he studied me.
“‘Communicate’ encompasses many different things, my dear. Verbal, or nonverbal, it doesn’t matter how it is done. The nature of our deal disallows you from sharing information about me to anyone. You cannot speak, type, write, draw, or pantomime anything you know to that idiot or anyone else.” His fingers wrapped around my jaw and I flinched, expecting the pain of his earlier touch. But his skin only caused me to shiver as his fingers brushed along the sensitive spot. He firmly brought my face around to lock eyes with me. His gaze narrowed at whatever he saw in my expression. “I took you for someone more intelligent than this.” That twinge of anger flared up in the pit of my stomach.
“Of course I knew it might not work,” I growled. Dark’s eyebrows twitched.
“Then why try it?” I smirked.
“I already told you. I had to try something. Mark’s my friend and I can’t betray him anymore. I’m tired of being moved around like a chess piece in your game!” I screamed as Dark’s hand tangled into my hair and pulled my head back. I fell to my knees as he yanked again. I clawed at his hands, but his grip only tightened. He sneered down at me as I glared up at him. A few tears escaped my eyes. Dark pulled once more with a twist and I shrieked.
“You are mine, now,” he said with a fury in his eyes the likes of which I had never seen. Red and blue ghosts danced away from his body, screeching. “I gave you a choice and you chose this. It’s too late for regrets, my dear.” He whipped my head around before throwing my hair away, sending me into the leg of my desk with a crack. Dark strode across the room as I groaned. I blinked the floor back into focus as I cradled my head. Dark stood in the middle of the room adjusting his jacket, and wrangling his aura back in towards himself. I propped myself up on an elbow, glaring at him.
Hatred. That was the emotion that roiled under my skin. It should have been fear. Fear of his strength. Fear for my safety. Fear of crossing him again. But I couldn't take it anymore.
“Fuck your deal!” I spat at him as I got to one knee. “I'm done!” Dark sniffed indignantly as he cast a glance back at me.
“You don't have a choice anymore.”
“Bullshit! I'm backing out of my end of the deal, so just back out of yours and that will be the end of it.”
“Do you believe that my deals are so simplistic?”
“What more is there to a deal?” Dark’s sneer twisted into a dangerous smile. I paused. That smile caused my entire body to scream run.
“Fine.” He practically purred as he took a slow step towards me. “If you so badly wish to be free of our deal, then be. My. Guest.” He towered over my kneeling form as I watched him warily. “See how well you fare without me. See how well you fare with me as an enemy. And watch as you come crawling back once you see how much worse I can be.” I gave a small snarl.
“What the hell can you do? I'm done being scared of you.” I flinched as a deep laugh resonated from Dark’s chest. I scanned his face in horror. I had never heard Dark laugh. In these many months as his pawn, not once had he truly laughed. But his laugh brought a familiar ball of panic up my throat as he sneered down at me.
“You will see, oh you will see, what we can do.” Darkness overcame my vision for a moment and when my sight returned, Dark was gone. My chest shuddered as I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. I wheezed around the knot in my throat and it loosened with each gurgled intake. I was alone. Then why did everything feel so… wrong? Dark’s words repeated over and over in my head. For all my anger-driven bravado, the thought of unknown terrors that Dark could subject me to made me tremble.
I hoisted myself up and tiptoed across my room. I had to investigate the rest of the apartment. Something still felt wrong and the thought crossed my mind that Dark may have tampered with my home. Every nerve felt on edge as I peeked around the door frame. The hall appeared untouched. I crept along the wall, breath as quiet as possible. The lounge and kitchen stood just as I had left them. I stepped into the middle of my apartment, surveying the space. Nothing. But I was paranoid, and every squeak of the floorboards or sigh of the house made me flinch. I couldn't live like that. I couldn't be afraid of my own home. I closed my eyes in the middle of my apartment and listened. Listened for normal house noises, and for anything that wasn’t. And as I stood there with my hands clenched by my sides, straining to hear even the softest of noises, it came to me. There weren’t any unnatural sounds.
The ringing had stopped.

A Dangerous Game (Part 1)
Background info: I based this part on the “Chocolate” ending from A Date with Markiplier. Anything that comes after this beginning part is actually based around a bunch of lines from “World’s Quietest Let’s Play 4″ that my-dark-wordscomplied into a list of prompts. I purposely wrote this so that it would feel a little disjointed and choppy so I’m sorry if that bothers you. Also, this will not have any fluffy Darkiplier in it. He’s gonna be a prick.
Warnings: mild blood, and violence
To say that the day went differently than expected would have been the biggest understatement of my life. It was just supposed to be a date. But something had gone wrong. Horribly, horrendously wrong. My mind reeled from the pure anger and malice he emitted. Couldn't comprehend how I had gotten to that black void. Mark had been next to me moments before. But everything went by so quickly. Or was it slowly? Had time itself stopped? Nothingness, a dinner table. Ringing that hurt to hear. Whispers of wonderful things. Visions of pleasure and splendor. Temptation after temptation. Rage.
I stood frozen in place as I watched two men with the same face fight one another. I needed to do something! What should I do? A punch in the gut. What could I do? Knuckles cracking across a jaw. I racked my brain for something, anything, any idea. A scream of pain. But there was nothing. Someone’s blood dripping on the concrete. Nothing.
So I improvised. Grabbed the nearest blunt object and swung it into the head of that… twisted version of Mark as hard as I could. And he stumbled. Fell. We had stared for a second. And then, I was wrapped up tight in Mark’s arms. It was over. I felt safe again.
I made a mistake.
The world turned gray and the whine that followed him shrieked in my ears as he sat there with a smirk, ice cream forgotten. I think I was crying. I don't know. I couldn't feel anything. The wrong choice. I had made the wrong choice, he said. The truth of his words pierced my soul. Any resolve to fight shattered. I made the wrong choice. And because of it, Mark was gone. Replaced by something cruel. And he wouldn't let me go.
But in my mistake came a light. And the darkness in front of me flinched and cursed and writhed because of it. Mark wasn't gone. I fell for the shapes in the dark, but I didn't extinguish the light that could dispel it. My call to action hadn't been in his plan. He had assumed he was dead. This reflection couldn't remain corporeal with Mark alive. Not for long. And we both knew it. I couldn’t stop him from finishing what he had started, though. He was too strong. So I begged. Told him I’d do anything. A strange look had washed over his features as he contemplated me. A look of curiosity. Before it warped into a perverse smile.
So, he presented me with a deal. A damning deal. A deal where no matter what I did, what I chose… I lost. An ultimatum that ended with death or servitude. Futile martyrdom or self-preserving betrayal.
...Were those really the only options? Is it really true that I would lose either way? The longer I thought about it, the more appealing his proposal to serve him became. The pros outweighed the cons. And if I played my cards right, maybe I could even win his little game. I stared at that outstretched palm for what felt like hours, but I wrapped my shaking hand around his and the deal was made. A deal with the devil.
Mark rolled on the concrete in front of my stunned face. I knelt, helped him sit up. Blood stains peppered his suit as he asked me question after question. Was I okay? What had happened to him? Where had the other man gone? Did anything happen while he was unconscious?
And I lied. My tongue seemed to move on its own, soothing him with my words. I was fine (for the moment). He had been hit in the head (by me). The man had run off (after I betrayed you for him). He had only been unconscious for a few minutes, nothing had happened (to him, but I had been to somewhere more harrowing than Hell).
As I draped my wounded friend around my shoulders, I couldn't look him in the eyes. I wish he could forgive me one day. This had been my best option. His best option. At least now we had a chance. But as I helped him back home, the ringing in my ears followed me.
