“That’s the risk that comes with sailing, I suppose. So many die out here. I’m sorry I couldn’t save anyone else. Branches and stones, got it. No, I’ve never needed to. I just use nets and such to catch fish at home. “
The mermaid stumbled a little when she first got up, but was fine after a few seconds, easily following behind the other woman. It’d been a while since she’d been on land, but she was still pretty good at walking. She immediately went to finding branches and stones, taking them back to her new friend when she’d gathered a few of each.
“How’s this? I got as much as I could carry!”

Akela glanced over at the woman lying on the sand when she spoke and smiled, glad she’d finally woke up. It’d been a good few hours since she’d managed to pull the woman from the shipwreck and she’d sat here with her the whole time, waiting on her waking up.
“There was a storm a few hours ago and your ship wrecked. I only just managed to pull you out, you’re lucky I was in the area. I wasn’t quick enough to save the rest of your crew though, I’m sorry. You’re on a little island in Hawaii. We’re the only two here, no islanders live here as far as I know.”

“I’m sure they wouldn’t mind too much. The ocean was their lives, it’s better off for them to be in the sea rather than buried on land since that’s where they spent most of their time. It’s more fitting. Alright, I might as well stay and keep you company.”
Akela watched the woman pull her boots and blouse off and toss them behind herself while she waited on her tail drying off, the scales slowly seeming to disappear and colour darkening to match her skin tone as her tail started to turn into legs.
“Men like that get drowned and eaten. I don’t really believe in it either, it’s stupid. We should probably start to build a fire, the sun will go down soon. There’s fruit on this island we can eat, and we could use that sword of yours as a spear to catch fish.”

“Yes, they all drowned. The storm was quite bad. You don’t need to thank me, it’s no problem. A good few days by boat, longer by swimming. Islanders come here every so often so you might be able to get to a ride next time they’re here, but you’ll be waiting a while. They were here a few days ago.”
Akela sat up and moved herself back and up out of the water and onto the sand so she was closer to the woman. She very gently moved her hair out of the way to see the cut on her head, humming and moving her hand away. It was bleeding a lot less than it was when she pulled her out of the water, but it still didn’t look too good.
“You should probably take your clothes off and hang them somewhere to dry, they’re soaked. There’s not much I can do for your head I’m afraid, we just need to hope the blood will stop. So, what are you doing on the sea? It’s not often you find a woman aboard a ship, a pirate one at that. It’s bad luck. There must be a good reason all those men let you sail with them.”
