Having more musical Cherry costume thoughts, mostly thanks to @asexual-juliet’s incredible costume masterpost.

More thoughts on her being the only main character with a costume change and how that relates to the show as a “memory play” / a play that exists in Ponyboy’s mind (can’t find any of the clips where the actors talk about that)

Cherry is the character that changes the most to Ponyboy, because she’s a stranger to him at the beginning. Her first costume is the image Pony has of her from afar - Cherry Valance, Queen of the Socs - and her second costume is Cherry the person he’s gotten to know.

Her first costume is an almost cartoonish expression of femininity. In Pony’s mind, Cherry is an explosion of bright pink, the ideal Girl. His frame of reference for the ideal pretty, glamorous girl would be the actresses he sees in movies. Like say, just as an example, this Ann-Margret pinup that Soda definitely has on the wall in their room. (Side by side comparison for all your cherrycola needs)

Her second costume is noticeably muted, noticeably less bright and cheery, in comparison. It’s still a nice outfit, but it looks more like an outfit a real person would wear instead of a musical character.

I was joking that the other reason Cherry’s the one with a costume change is because she’s the only main character who can afford one. But it’s kind of true. Everyone Pony knows wears basically the same clothes everyday, recycles the same clothes as long as they can. When Cherry shows up wearing a noticeably different outfit from the first time he saw her, that would stick out in his mind. She can afford to wear one kind of outfit for a night out and a different one more appropriate for a hospital, as opposed to the gang who can’t even switch out their rumble clothes for their friend’s funeral.

And of course there’s the Bob of it all. Her second costume is Bob’s color, because Pony now associates her with Bob, with Bob’s death. He projects onto her his anger and blame at Bob, and his guilt toward Bob.

pony with a nervous tick. darry with chronic pains after his football days. dallas johnny n steve all with levels of hearin loss from gettin knocked in the head. steve with chronic hand pain from fights n workin on cars. soda with chronic knee pain from his rodeo days. just. let these boys hurt. let their lives catch up with them. let the way the are rough on their bodies have lastin impact.

I think part of what changes about pony n darrys relationship post canon is there's a constant runnin dialouge about their feelins n why they react the way they do. which is incredibly important but also results in a lot of conversations that sound like 'I love you. you make my life very difficult. I love you.'

Soda is the player who keeps wanting to do stuff that makes Pony say, “I mean, you can try……”

Two-Bit is the guy whose character is a sexy woman, like an elf princess.

Dally just plays himself.

Steve becomes a stickler for the rules and when Pony tells him he can’t do something he whips out the page that says he can.

Johnny’s that player who describes craziest character choices in his normal, real life subdued demeanor; hunched into his seat, in his usual low, soft voice, “um…….ok, so he takes his ax and, uh, just starts choppin all their heads off.”

Darry mostly just rolls the dice when he’s supposed to and doesn’t really do so much RPing, until he drops the most insane lore for his character that’s either so heartbreaking or so fucked up or both, that Pony never looks at him the same way again.

Just dreamed up a new jack stauber hit that was SUPPOSED to be analogous for a method of understanding when you should edit or rewrite a professional essay where "if you served your writing in a diner, would people be content with eating it?" (Probably not the best way I could summarize that but whatever)

If I remember correctly (just woke up from it but I can't remember a darn thang!!!), it started out as the main character, who I guess is supposed to be the listener, making the "dish", then transitioning to them giving it to someone, but the critic of it being unreasonably harsh and I think deemed as "the helping hand"

But then!! The listener takes a step back and is somehow served their OWN dish, and it was something about them eating themselves or?? Being even harder on themselves for the mistakes of the dish?? There was another character with them that I think was supposed to represent another upsetting aspect of themselves deemed the "unhelping hand" like that's the only thing I kind of know for sure. i wish I remembered more cause it sounded funny and maybe my jorts are a little stained/silly (like with piss. Out of fear. I get scared easily.)

It reminded me of peppermint but I could not recite a lyric if I tried

more hc all three curtis brothers have freckles. usually pony and soda's are more visible. but in the summer darry's freckles EXPLODE like im talking all down his face shoulders and arms. pony and johnny like to draw all over him and play like connect the dots with his freckles or smth. dally has heterochromia (idk if i spelled that right). one blue eye and one hazel eye steve randle is the most dramatic cunt you will ever meet. bro will scream "im gonna kms" at the slightest problem two-bit has NO filter. lil bro will say whatever is on his mind without a second thought. he will say the most out of pocket shit and the gang will slowly turn to stare at him like "wHAT" johnny cannot remember shit. he WILL NOT remember your birthday, and multiple times has had to ask the gang their age.

Okay. Hmm. I hear you with the “Soda and addiction” headcanons because on a surface level, I get where folks are coming from. He’s an adrenaline junkie, the world is loud and overwhelming, he finds ways to drown it out. I see what’s happening with those headcanons. I sort of get the vision.

But I feel like everything we learn about him in canon directly contradicts the idea of an addictive Soda.

He doesn’t drink. (I know people theorize Ponyboy is wrong about this, but listen, we have to believe the kid sometimes or the entire concept of canon becomes a joke.) He rarely ever smokes. He stays out of fights to protect Darry’s custody. He keeps a steady job. He’s faithful to his girlfriend and has a longterm goal to settle down with her—and canon implies they were having little, if any, sex.

For being flighty and easily distracted, Soda actually seems comparatively responsible, at least when paired against most of the guys in his circle—and if you’re not willing to believe Ponyboy’s narration, I think Darry’s trust in Soda is the biggest proof of this. These guys “know the score” and living recklessly isn’t just a matter of personal lifestyle, it’s something that directly affects their family. Soda is aware of this and the repercussions his actions have on Darry’s custody, and I simply can’t believe he’s out there living the Two-Bit life behind his brothers’ backs.

NOT TO SAY he’s living responsibly, because, well, he’s still Soda. But there’s a measure of awareness and self control that I don’t think we give him credit for having.

Pinning Soda as the addictive brother is ironic to me when PONYBOY MICHAEL CURTIS IS RIGHT THERE. The kid who eats handfuls of aspirin. Who can’t live without pepsi. Who chainsmokes at 14.

One of the Curtis boys has an addictive personality, and it ain’t Soda.

I hope you know that, respectively, Darry n Soda were so delighted with their younger brothers. darry used to be INSEPARABLE from sodas cribside. there were plenty of nights the curtis parents would wake to soda cryin n find darry had already beaten them to him, reachin down as far as he could to twist sodas curls around his finger n try to sooth him. soda used to carry pony around n show him off to EVERYONE. pony was near half the size of him but he'd toddle around with his kid brother. most the time the only way they could get soda to sit still was to give him a sleepin pony. he'd sit stock still with his baby brother in his arms for hours. he'd show him off n tell everyone that pony was 'his baby'. Just Darry n Soda n their baby brother.

I would give you the world Johnny Cade... Heartbreak Hotel is blasting in the background by the way because. Maybe Baby from The Outsiders show is mine forever/silly. I think brothers got the music POPPING, and it doesn't stir him a bit because he feels safe and comfortable like he should. i think whenever one of thems sleeping on the couch, they continue with their buffoonery like usual but they wont usually make an active attempt to get them up if that makes sense and isn't normal. I feel like thats normal but anyways.

Also, even if I made that silly Jally comic, I do not like the idea that Dallas babies Johnny frequently - like I see that a lot in cutesy posts but the big brother energy radiates too hard off of him for me to visualize it internally. Dal gets pissed at Two for trying to draw a penis on Johnny's face while he's sleeping because DAL wants to be the perpetrator of that - He wants to give him a curly mustache! He wants to cackle at him when he gets up! Brother flicks hair ties at him and kicks his shins when he isn't looking just to annoy him and Johnny giggles about it!! Dal calls Johnny a doofus and a dumbass, and Johnny's the only guy who can make fun of his accent, but isn't immune from threats like!! I think Dal would make Johnny an exception to a lot of things, but I don't think that would rewrite his personality idk, with love
