SUPERPOSITION (REFLECTION)

way back in 2010, a new band called Young the Giant released their debut album. they quickly became a staple in the alternative music scene, as well as at all of the major festivals. their hit “My Body” caught our attention in the best way.
now, years later, the same group has continued to put out really good lyric-driven rock music.
their newest album Mirror Master contains several stand-out tracks, but one in particular, “Superposition”, stands above the rest. the band has even dropped two separate versions since the album release. frontman Sameer Gadhia revealed the song is about “recognizing the constant that hides behind infinite variations. So why the hell not give you another version of the song — another reflection, if you will?”
this new “Reflection” is a sparse arrangement, with a haunting piano motif that will stick around in your head long after the final note. it is emotion personified and allows for the listener to attach their own personal meaning to the lyrics.

BLAST OFF

disco is here to stay.
but just like everything else in this world, the genre is constantly evolving. Daft Punk has built their sound on it, and the new emergence of funk has also brought the seemingly dated genre into the forefront of popular music.
it is most recently displayed in Gesaffelstein’s new single “Blast Off”, the third from his new album Hyperion. it features vocals from Pharrell Williams, which lends a shiny pop-crossover sound without taking away from the ominous deeply pounding beat that is a trademark of the French producer.
it seems disco has moved from its early days of glitter and glam into a much darker realm.

Hyperion is out now and also includes the hit single “Lost in the Fire” with The Weeknd.

THROWAWAY

British producer SG Lewis has skirted the mainstream for years now, teaming up with talented yet lesser known vocalists.
his debut EP Shivers was released in 2015, after being known for remixing popular artists. his brand of electronic R&B offers slick beats and atmospheric layers. his three part series Dusk, Dark, Dawn started in 2018.
this particular track, “Throwaway”, is the latest single from the final EP Dawn, and it features singer Clairo, whom Lewis collaborated with last year on “Better”.
the dreamy lullaby has a hypnotic beat undertone, and Clairo’s voice is exquisitely pleasing to the ear.

Dawn is due out this year.

INSOMNIA

nothing is more relatable than the feeling of missing someone.
Daya feels it so strongly she can’t even sleep. her new single “Insomnia” hits hard as the singer laments “Baby, it’s only been one night / Feels like it’s been like a week”. the beat seems almost nostalgic; it’s very similar to Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”.
Daya first caught the world’s attention with her debut single “Hide Away” in 2015, and then in 2016 with her album Sit Still, Look Pretty, which included the title track and “Cool”.
she is also heard on The Chainsmokers’ song “Don’t Let Me Down”, as well as “I Wanna Know” by RL Grimes.

BUZZ

boy bands have become a thing of the past, right? at least in the way we have come to know them.
let me introduce you to Before You Exit.
consisting of three brothers (Connor, Riley and Toby McDonough) the group first broke out in 2009 with their self-released debut EP A Short Story Long. since then, the band has released a few more EPs, and did a song with Great Good Fine Ok, “Find Yourself”.
their upcoming full-length album will be all new material, and they have been slowly teasing us with smaller EPs along the way. the better of the two so far (IMO) is 001_love, released last November.
the best song is “Buzz” and it has one of the most mesmerizing bass drops i’ve ever heard. couple that with clever lyrics about love vs lust and a catchy bell sample that rings in your ear, and you have a bona fide banger.

love, pain & retrospect is due to drop later this year.

REMIND YOU

Electropop duo Frenship (comprised of James Sunderland and Brett Hite) broke onto the scene in 2016 with their single “Capsize”.
now they are finally releasing new music. “Remind You” is energetic yet relaxed, with an atmospheric vibe similar to bands like LANY and The 1975.
“We want our music to be your best friend” is a quote from Hite. i think we all want that from our music, and if this track is any indication, they will surely deliver.

Vacation will be released May 17.

GIRLFRIEND

“I’ve got it, I’m a man now, and there’s nothing you can do to make me change my mind...”
those are lyrics from Christine and the Queens’ first major hit “iT”, released in the US in 2015. Now, Christine (which is the stage name of French singer Héloïse Letissier) is simply Chris and she has owned her identity in a big big way.
her second studio album Chris was released last fall and it contains more of her signature sound, which combines 80′s synth-pop with a little bit of R&B. in fact, her music seems to defy genre, just as her identity defies any label.
the hit single “Girlfriend” (released in France as “Damn, dis-moi”) is the perfect example of her glossy 80′s vibe, complete with plenty of hard-hitting attitude. it is co-composed with American producer Dâm-Funk.

Chris is available in both English and French versions.

FALLING

nothing defines a voice like its tone. and Léon has tone in spades.
the Swedish singer just dropped her debut album, a few years after first breaking onto the scene and catching the eyes of the likes of Katy Perry.
my favorite track from the album, “Falling”, is a soulful upbeat reminder that we never truly get over our past loves. her voice is smooth yet yearning, complemented with a catchy doo-wop beat.

DON’T FEEL LIKE CRYING

at just 22, Sigrid is killing the game. her attitude is infectious, even if her music is bouncy pop. her face says “come at me” but her voice weaves its way into your ears like a soft breeze.
the Norwegian singer started a band when she was just 17. fast forward to 2016: she signs with Island Records and releases her debut single “Don’t Kill My Vibe”.
the best single so far (IMHO) released from her upcoming album is “Don’t Feel Like Crying”. the song has an 80′s Annie Lennox vibe, and her voice is so buttery but with that aforementioned distinctive bite. perfect for a post-breakup dance marathon in your living room, or just, you know, any occasion.

THEY DON’T CARE ABOUT US

ok FIRST OF ALL: we need to talk about Yebba.
this woman’s voice...... i simply have no words. i just. i need a moment to breathe just speaking her name. NO JOKE. she is going to be HUGE.
if you need proof, just watch this absolutely flawless performance:
youtube
I MEAN COME ON! her emotional depth and vocal delivery are so on point, i can’t even name any other singer ever in the history of singers when she is singing.
YEBBA YEBBA YEBBA!
ok, now that i got that out of my system (jk, there will be another post about her when her album drops but moving on)...
THIS sick track from English dance group Rudimental is so smooth and also has a powerful message. Yebba is there, along with English-Irish singer Maverick Sabre. the charming horn sample fits nicely with the heavy beat, and the two singers’ voices float effortlessly over it all.
check it below:
youtube
the track is on Rudimental’s album Toast to Our Differences.

rachel green

the world seems to be on a “Friends” kick right now.
the nostalgia is real as the hit TV series nears its 25th birthday. iconic images from the show are popping up on clothes, in Buzzfeed articles and in countless memes and GIFs.
Canadian R&B singer Ruben Young even captures his boyhood desires about the iconic character in his newest single. he croons about his dream girl over a sexy beat, along with a nice verse from Odd Future’s Hodgy.
even better, the music video (see below) features memorable Rachel moments from the show, with Young’s face superimposed over her co-stars.

let’s be honest... we all had a crush on Rachel, right?

RUBY

if you happen to be a fan of Bombay Bicycle Club, then you were saddened (like me) when they took a hiatus in 2016.
but thank goodness they did, because we now have Mr Jukes (aka Jack Steadman, the former frontman of BBC).
his style is very similar to his band’s, incorporating indie folk with electronica. not to mention bad ass beats.
the first time i heard “Ruby” was in a Starbucks just a few months ago, and i immediately Shazam-ed it. after discovering who the artist was, it became my newest obsession. the instrumentation is hypnotizing and that BEAT. perfect for working out, walking through city streets or dancing alone in your living room.

TALK

“can we just talk?”
a simple question, but so many different meanings. it’s what opens this new single from Khalid.
you may know him from recent collabs (Benny Blanco’s “Eastside” with Halsey, and Logic’s “1-800-273-8255″) as well as his hits “Location” and “Better”.
his soothing soulful voice is the perfect pairing for a chill R&B beat, which is exactly what UK producer duo Disclosure (of “Latch” fame) do on this track.
Hear it below.

JUICE
welcome to jammy!
a new way to discover music. we all know there are a bazillion music blogs all over the interwebs. any attempt to stand apart would be futile. right? WRONG.
hi, my name is tyler. i have gravitated toward music my whole life, and I am myself a musician. (but more on that later.)
i am always finding new music, and now i hope to share those finds with all of you. enjoy! and feel free to send me YOUR current faves. after all, music unites us all. and all that sentimental shit.
NOW ON TO THE MUSIC.
juice - iyla
my first entry is devoted to this refreshing kween. iyla is one to watch this year. if her fiery red hair and striking eyes don’t get your attention, her music definitely will.
i mean, who would look at this girl and possibly label her a “soothing R&B crooner”? but that is 100% what she is.
her new single “Juice” is so fresh and groovy that it deserves its own genre. the second the beat slips in, my ear was hooked.
if that isn’t enough, she dropped a visual that is unlike anything i have ever seen. check it out below.
youtube
keep iyla on your radar, world! (also check out her other new single “Shampoo”.)
