I like that even in a world as crazy as One Piece that Oda doesn't brush off the idea that people will judge others based solely on their looks. This is of course most prominent in Chopper's backstory, but unlike Chopper, Brook isn't cute. No one's going to mistake him for a pet or a mascot or whatever. Even the Straw Hats other than Luffy were quite judgemental before hearing his full story.

But even so, Brook still has a place in the world. He still has friends who will (eventually) accept him for who he is. It just takes a man like Luffy to help break through that barrier.
