etymology of weapons in mando’a

this is all speculative, but i’ve been teasing apart the different etymologies for mandalorian weapons in hopes of being able to come up with new words for other weapons (like bow, which has no equivalent in mando’a).

beskad - a slightly curved sword of mandalorian iron. bes is likely derived from beskar, and -kad means sword or saber. 

tracy’uur - a blaster. tracy is derived from tracyn, or the word for fire (both the burning kind and the shooting kind). uur is more of a mystery. uur by itself means silence, so perhaps blasters are associated with firing more quietly than the slugthrowers that proceeded them. 

bes’bev - mandalorian wind instrument also used for combat: a large metal flute with a sharpened, cut-off end. bes could again come from beskar considering the weapon is metallic, but it could also be derived from the word for music, bes’laar. bev could come from either bev, the word for needle or spike, or bevik, the word for stick (which itself is probably derived from bev, but whatever).

beviin - mandoa.org lists the definition as “lance”, but i’d wager it’s better translated as “spear”, considering that irl lances were a specialized type of spear developed millennia after the invention of the spear. bev comes from bev, which we’ve established means needle or spike. -viin could derive from iviin meaning speed, or viinir meaning run, both because of the speed that is required to stab with a spear.

kal  - it’s defined as “blade”, but i posit a better equivalent would be either “dagger or knife”, considering the existence of the mandalorian kal dagger. kal is one letter off from kad (sword or saber), but i’d argue that kal came first because irl we invented knives before swords, so it makes sense for the taungs to have done the same.

jetii’kad - lightsaber. this one is easy because it’s a compound word - jetii means jedi and kad means saber.

kad’au - an alternate word for lightsaber. it’s another compound word with kad meaning saber, but au is a little harder to suss out the origin. the only other word that uses au as a suffix is gaan’au, meaning laser pointer (sidenote: no i have no idea why kt thought this was an important word to have in her conlang). considering a lightsaber is also a laser and we can rule out gaan as meaning laser (it means hand), i feel confident that au means laser, so kad’au literally translates as “laser sword” (another sidenote: this is hilarious and i also now have a mental image of obi-wan using his lightsaber like a laser pointer in a council meeting)

besbe'trayc - weapons. this is a compound word constructed from the word besbe meaning kit, and trayc, which is derived from tracyn, meaning fire.

be’senaar - defined as “missile”, though i think it could also be a word for projectiles of any variety, including arrows. senaar means bird and be’ is a possessive, so projectiles are literally said to belong to the birds, likely because they’re launched through their domain.

tracyaat - artillery. tracy comes from tracyn aka fire, which we’ve seen before. -aat shows up in several other words in mando’a, but i’d argue the most logical meaning is related to the word trat’ade, meaning force. that would make the literal meaning of tracyaat fire-force.

marev - fist. this is the one that gave me the most grief. the closest related word i could find was marekar, meaning navigation. it’s possible to navigate using your hand and a knowledge of the stars, so the best i could come up with is that mare meant hand in some proto-mando language, and rev, which shows up nowhere else in the entire lexicon, is a root that implies that the hand is clenched

shuk’orok - crushgaunt. shuk derives from shukalar, to crush, and -orok is derived from kom’rk, meaning gauntlet. kom’rk and -orok look different, but they have a similar pronunciation of kohm-or-rohk and -oh-rok respectively.

Little Nightmares 2 Spoilers

Okay so I’ve seen takes where it’s like “Six is a traitor. She dropped Mono and Mono grew up with the hate and it twisted him to become Thin Man,” and boy lemme tell you that breaks my heart and I love it.

But you know what I think does worse?

Is that if Mono told Six to let go. I’m not gonna delve into the proof of why this is possible, just the implications if it was. Imagine Mono and Six running out of the crumbling transmission tower. Imagine Six is still reeling from her time as a fucking monster. Imagine she snaps out of it all and moves through the familiar motion of catching her friend. Imagine she starts to pull him up like usual, but Mono refuses.

Imagine Mono keeps being drawn to the hallway from the TV scenes because that’s just him. When Thin Man first comes out of the TV, Mono reaches out to the Thin Man (before it all went to shit, that is). Imagine Mono desperately running through the rain, jumping from TV to TV, clawing his way through the streets trying to save his friend. Imagine him defeating the Thin Man. Imagine him running through the transmission tower. Imagine he knows. He knows that he is the Thin Man. He knows that he will grow to become that monster. Imagine Mono knows and - kind, sweet, heart of gold Mono - firmly decides to not let Six face the Thin Man ever again.

To not face him ever again.

So he tells her to let go.

And she does.

also i’ve never played either games i just watched the walkthroughs and im hooked goddamn it

1/ oh my god, oh my gfuckkdnnddndg god. the game was so beautiful. the graphics were :Chef’s kiss. i want to see every shiny wet surface from the rain in my head at all times. i want to print the hunter’s forest and make it my wallpaper. i want to cry myself to sleep staring at the purple glow of the doors in the transmission tower. i am going apeshit over the graphics oh my goddd

2/ maybe it was just me but i never really was into into little nightmares before? i mean i watched the first game obvs, and i knew there was a second game, but I didn’t hype myself up or stave of my hunger (hah) by gleaming little details as it developed.  so when Mono rescued the little kid from the hunter’s cabin i was like ‘awww, friend. friend from woods. hold hands with friend. team up with friend. keep friend safe at all costs’ and that was that. then what happens? in the rain? after the school? little friend gets a raincoat? little friend gets a very familiar raincoat? little friend is actually really fucking important to plot?? i lost my goddamn mind.

3/ the monsters all freaked me out. one way or another, they did. for the hunter, it was the way six and mono got rid of him (THE DETAIL OF THE SHOTGUN’S DRAWBACK AHSUAIHSUIHSUIWH WHAT). for the teacher it was her freaky ass neck. for the doctor well, other than the fact he’s practically spiderman, it was the fact that they burnt him alive. oh my god and thin man. Thin Man. oh my god.

4/ the details. the details. the details. like i said earlier, the shotgun draw back. the fact that if you hold a flashlight and six’s hand in the same hand then you can’t really use the flashlight. the fact that if you shine a flashlight in six’s eyes then she lifts a hand up to cover them. just oh my god, they do not rest.

5/ six’s coding. man. she’s a really person isn’t she? where she go after you defeated the living hand and got a power cell? you think she’s just gonna wait for you at the exact same spot?? you think you’re, what, a video game character? you think you have to do everything by yourself and act surprised when six actually knows what to do? what do you think she is, an npc of a video game?? huh??? huh???

6/ i think we reached the ending now. the ending tore my heart out. i was like the greek guy that stole fire for Man but got punished by having eagles eat my liver out every day. that but it’s my heart. what the fuck man. oh my god after all we been true. damn fuck six and mono were friends how could you. let them be friends. let them be friends. they need friends.

7/ obviously when my heart has been broken in such a violent manner the only remedy is fanfiction. oh my god the fanfiction. glorious. amazing. you lot are doing god’s work. i will die for each and every one of you.

this. oh my god this. I’ve seen Too Many posts that said “They shouldn’t have fired Carano!! She was just expressing her opinion!! They’re trying to paint it as transphobic and anti-semitic but it’s all fake!!!” and I’m here, knowing that Carano did all those things and deserved what she got, but being unable to say it because I was stupid enough to not save the sources.

Enough is enough.

Carano reaped what she sowed. She deserved to be fired. Kindly please fuck off if you think she didn’t.

Lucasfilm did not fire Gina Carano from The Mandalorian for being Transphobic:

She got fired for being Anti-Semitic.

Her being Transphobic is not at all okay either but,

Anti-Semitism is not talked about enough.

She basically just compared Holocaust victims to being a Republican. Do you realize how fucked up that is?!

I’m Jewish. I really don’t like when someone compares the genocide of 6 million of my people to being a Republican. When was the last time 6 million Republicans were murdered via gas chambers?

People need to know that this was why she got fired. Don’t you dare just like this post!
