10 books for 2025 ✨

tagged by @impossibletruths <3 responding on this blog instead of on my paliampelo account bc I don't have access to it from my laptop and i can't be bothered to type on my phone for that long. (also i figured hey, reading account!)

now, this year, my general goal is to read more genre books and less short story collections, which has been my normal recently. i'm chasing that feeling of a book you can't put down until you've turned the final page. i believe i still have it in me somewhere, and i hope to find it again reading more fun, plotty genre books rather than slower, literary ones.

this a list made of books i already own, on my bookshelves right now!

our wives under the sea by julia armfield. already reading this one! i loved her short story collection, and was so interested in reading a long form from her with suspense and horror (?) elements. my friend is moving and was giving books away, so i snatched it up.

is this going to be the year i finally read this is how you lose the time war? it's been on my shelf for years. i know i'm going to love it. what the fuck is stopping me, at this point.

our share of night by martina enriquez. my friend passed it to me and said it was spectacular and super interesting, and i'm very curious, bc from his description, it sounded really cool. it's a longboi, a certified chonkster, which worries me a bit--but I'll give it a shot!

gideon the ninth by tamsyn muir. in pursuit of fun, plotty genre fiction!! i'm really excited for this one.

the galaxy and the ground within. becky chambers, my beloved. it's the only book of hers i haven't read, and i definitely need to rectify that this year.

thief of time by sir terry pratchett. in order for any year to be successful, some discworld is necessary. i have a life project of letting discworld books find me in second hand shops, and the ones in my possession in my current apartment are thief of time and pyramids.

swamplandia by karen russel. this was quite popular on booktube a while ago and I found it in a second hand bookstore in perfect condition. interested to finally get to it!

six of crows duology by leigh bardugo, bc everyone says it's the shit and i found both the books for cheap on vinted and who doesn't love a group of misfits and a heist.

we are made of diamond stuff by isabel waidner. i bought this on a whim during my trip to london a few months back and it looks like a short and punchy story i could enjoy!

+ two graphic novels bc i love them

lettres perdues by jim bishop. super cool looking art-style, intriguing story, got it at a discount bookstore in the pocket editions that i much prefer than the massive ones you tend to find in france.

passage by edith hammar. i had spent half an hour+ browsing every single shelf of a comic/bd bookstore being all undecided about what to get, and as soon as i fell on this, the decision was made instantly. i loved the artstyle and the summary and i can't wait to get to it, maybe even this weekend!

Hello, pal! Thank you for creating this blog! I find it very intriguing what my favourite writer’s read. And yours recommendations are so great! Besides that, I wanted to ask you what things/tags you usually avoid in fics? What tags you avoided but found yourself enjoying reading later?

hi ! thank you for this question! i'm glad you're enjoying the blog, and I hope you find some new stories you like through it :)

before answering, a very important disclaimer: obviously, my personal opinions have no bearing on other people finding these tropes/characters/plots enjoyable. i'm not casting any judgement on any of it. I'm not saying any of the things I mention are bad. they are simply not my preference!

the answer to this question of course varies depending on the ship and fandom, so I'll focus on jikook for this one.

for jikook, I avoid reading (and writing):

age swap. I think I might have read one or two with this trope from writers i like, but it's really not my thing. especially because the dynamic of these two plays so heavily on the hyung/dongsaeng social expectations.

age difference. I like my jikook quite close in age. plus, see point above.

CEO/chaebol aus. I just find it hard to empathise with rich people, hand on heart. again, I have read a couple fics that I liked with this trope, but it takes a lot for me to be convinced!

enemies to lovers. again, hard for me to buy these two as enemies. i have read fics that did it well, but i tend to prefer other dynamics for them!

most fic where jk is an asshole and remains so throughout. it's just a huge leap for me and I don't tend to find it enjoyable.

too weak-hearted for dead dove, too soft to read toxic relationship, jealousy, divorce, unhappy ending, cheating between jikook.

most omegaverse, these days. I have read a bunch previously, and I'm sure I'll read more eventually, so it's not a hard no, but there's just such a massive amount out there it's hard to keep up. also, I have reservations about some popular tropes in this genre, so i tend to read very specifically.

E rated fic. I don't avoid it completely, but I do often skip sex scenes entirely, depending on mood, characterisation, and tags.

about your second question, the answer is actually omegaverse as well. i hardly ever read any before getting into jikook, and here i just went with the flow, because there's such volume i had to see what it was all about. I've also read a few hybrids fics for the same reason.

I find myself enjoying long fics these days as well! the amount of 100k+ word fics in this ship is entirely disproportionate to any other I've read before. i had to kind of train myself for it, but it turns out I do like just sinking into a super long fic once in a while and just letting it take me into some other world completely, like the grim reaper's love game fic I just recced.

so I suppose you can take this as a guide for things you are not likely to/ you will rarely find on this blog!

Comment: fucking LOVED this one. the concept is so fun and it's being exploited to the max here. i breezed through 100k because i was so hooked. jungkook is literally fighting for his life, going from challenge to challenge having to make jimin, who broke his heart in his first life while jungkook was in a really bad place, fall in love with him again. obviously it's really complicated, and it takes a lot of time and a lot of effort. there were some scenes between them that were so charged and tense that it made my whole body tingle. i wanted to leap into the screen just to be closer.

here is part of my final comment, ommitting spoilers: "what a fucking slam dunk. hell. this was incredible. so fun, so entertaining, so deeply emotional, so angsty and filled with tenderness, so comfortable and yet unexpected. this is an amazing story. i hope you're really proud of it."

and here's a sentence that punched me in the gut:

"Jeongguk used to fall asleep in the dark with tears glinting over his cheeks, silently begging for Jimin to come back to him.

Was it the Reaper he’d been begging to all along?"

Comment: This fic deals a lot with Jungkook's anxiety, even though it's from Jimin's pov. It felt to me like an honest depiction of all the ways it can be awkward and ugly and shitty to live with. It didn't stop me from enjoying the group's shenanigans during their DND sessions, though! I also really love the discussion Jimin and Jungkook had at the end when they finally talked to each other openly. It felt realistically rough around the edges, a little angsty and a lot honest. It made me shed a little tear for Jungkook. And I just fucking love when we have explicitly nerdy characters!! It makes my little heart so happy.

What is your all time favourite fic you’ve read on ao3?

this is a huge question. i've been staring at this in my inbox for days bc i didn't know where to start.

i know it's probably not what you're looking to hear, this being a jikook blog and all, but here are some of the fics i've gone back to the most over the years across different fandoms:

drarry fic called 'what we pretend we can't see', yes, even in these times where harry potter is tainted by all the jkr shit, for me, anyway. there's something i find really comforting about this fic! every year without fail i get the urge to reread it over christmas, i don't know why. it has a great, engaging plot, i 100% believe in these versions of the characters, and the way the relationship develops is just so engaging to me.

wangxian fic called 'hunters seeking solid ground' by attila. now, wangxian is a treasure trove of exceptional fic. you can find stuff for all tastes, all moods, all headcanons. this fic just has something so incredibly tender. if you've read any of my fics, you'll know i'm a sucker for that intimacy of sleeping next to someone, the softness, and i'm also a sucker for writing exhausted, burned out people finding refuge in someone. this fic is this turned up to one thousand.

anything, really anything, but especially 'linger in the sun' by etymologyplayground. also wangxian. the love they feel for each other in this fic reaches out of the screen and chokes me. i just. recommend this to everyone. forever. everyone and forever.

all my jikook recs are either here or will be here, but here are some non jikook but bangtan recs.

worldwide lonesome by loindexter: yoonjin. seriously so fucking incredible. the way jin's loneliness bleeds out of every word, fucking hell. this fic is basically why i'm into yoonjin--it opened my eyes forever.

kiss me hard before you go by 777335: sope childhood friends to lovers!!!!! just so sweet. i've read it a few times and it always leaves me with a huge smile and a full heart.

24 hours by trulyfine: more sope. this yoongi, man. the way i remember lines from this fic that make me want to scream. the way this person writes him, the author's voice is so strong and memorable. plus, the inherent romance of laundromats.

same damn hunger: some classic, excellently executed sope friends with benefits, pining while fucking deal. will stomp on your heart.

imprints (for the boys in the back) by pineconepickers: if you only ever read one namjin, fucking trust me, it should be this. then again, if you read this, you will definitely read everything else this author has ever written, because fucking hell. this ripped my heart out. i wanted to slap jin. there's a sequel, and it's even worse, angst that really wrings you dry. love to fucking death.

the universe needs more of you by attilathehun: my first namseok, and i was obsessed with it. you become just as infatuated with hoseok as namjoon is, and it's all just an amazing ride.

I LOVE Yoongi revealing his 10 year old relationship by calling it "romantic entanglement" and I am so behind this namgi lore, it made my heart so happy. jikook's relationship being based on solid pure love despite the ups and downs and untold things. fuck, this was SO GOOD."

Setting it in a wedding is so fun, so romcom, it sets the tone perfectly. I love a secretly smitten jk and he was perfect here. The scene where he asked jm to dance with him later had me like 🥰🥰🥰.
