It's that time again!

No I don't know how I'm doing these so fast, don't ask me that again, I don't imagine it'll continue.

We Buried The Wrong Guy but... dragons! Details you may have missed/discussion of design decisions/etc under the cut. Warning, it's a big one! I thought a Lot on this one!!

thank you to the sfthrpcord for their assistance here!! they were very helpful in deciding on some design elements.

friend who i can't remember the name of was hard to design. I didn't want to make him too complicated or too similar to the others. kept him yellow to stick with luke's colour but also because he's somewhat on the innocent side, like the kid. the dark patches on his feet are meant to look like he's gotten his hands dirty or bloody. the stripese are meant to mimic blood drips, too. He's looking at the kid instead of anyone else in the picture.

the theme of flowers and vines runs through the entire mafia side of the family; they're thick and strong on the don. he has broken horns and scars from fights but mostly he prefers to do things the subtle way. Making him lavender helped make it make sense for kiddo to be red; and allowed him to have a more innocent/sweet vibe, which goes well w the original cast. also AJ is blue so lavender is a nice compromise between red and blue. the plant he's bothering is also loosely based off lavender.

bitch wife carries the vine motif but it's much more delicate with traces of filligree. She also has more starburst 'flower' shapes, which I based loosely off poinsetta, a toxic plant. This allowed me to give kiddo more of those flower shapes... and she's also brown, theoretically a dull colour, midway between purple and red, and allowing her the same understatement as the Don has.

She's also antagonistic in this; her pose is threatening, teeth bared, neck raised, claws digging into the ground and postured forward with her wings still quite low. She's on the left to allow the natural lead from left to right to show her anger and violence more clearly for the viewer.

The dad is obviously drawn in the same stance as the mother; I did a reflected sketch and built them both from the same one to allow for a nice clean mimicry. However, his position is more defensive; wings are up like a shield, his expression is more open and his head is slightly more bowed. He's protecting, not attacking... but only himself. his patternation is rosettes because they made me think of gunshot injuries. Also again the delicate patterns allowed me to give more of that to the kid, which means...

I was trying to bring a few things to mind with the kid. The vine pattern obviously makes a heart on his chest, with three flowers; two divided, one on the middle, to mimic the shape of the picture and also him and his parents. They wrap thickly around his wrists and neck; a trapping, tying him to his family in a way he can't escape. I also tried to bring to mind arm/sleeve tattoos. his face has a 'flower', aka a crosshairs, right in the middle of his eyes... and a heart on his nose. He's looking at the camera, of course; because he's caught between the middle of his parents but set slightly back and out of the way. He's not running, or fighting, or posturing, just... watching.

james' hair glows like burning copper wires in the foggy red light that spills out of the door when connor finally pushes through it.

the snippets of bad pop songs he carries with him feel out of place once he's out of the prom room, and connor is glad when the door shuts them in when it falls closed, leaving him in fresh air and a vibrating quiet.

james' hair is black now, even darker than usual now that the sun has melted away.

it's like when he empties out his water bottle over his head after baseball training, wet hair clinging to his sweat-soaked neck before he shakes it like a wet dog.

connor is a wet dog, standing there.

james hasn't noticed him yet, he's turned away from the building, exhaling smoke and looking like one of the actors on connor's sister's posters.

he's cool, and has some sort of magnetic pull even now, sitting on the ground in air that still dully vibrates with a radio love song - there are details to him that connor knows, details that make him hard not to focus on:

the way he skids pebbles across the lake when they have a barbecue, the lazy grin he flashes a girl at a party before a kiss, the warmth of his side pressed into connor's when they're in a crowded bus, the smell of his axe bodyspray, the bite marks in his pencil, the sound of his yawn in the morning after a party, the casual strength in the act of pulling a girl closer to put his arm around her neck, the way he cracks grapes open with his molars, his hot and sweaty palm on the back of connor's neck after a match when he shouts nonsense into his ear.

it isn't a lot but it is more than connor ever intended.

"hey james."

james turns around, still lazily exhaling smoke, and connor feels like a deer in headlights but in a very minor way - he loosens his tie, enjoying the way james' eyes drop to it.

they never really talk about things like this but when they study in the middle of the night before an exam, running on three energy drinks and a couple of last warnings, their elbows touch on the kitchen table.

"oh hey", james says, and there's half a grin on his tongue. "i didn't see you there."
