In addition to the wildlife, Kenya is a rich source of extremes and diverse cultural experiences. In 2014, we were guided through the Kibera slums of Nairobi by a gentleman, who was regarded as its mayor. The slums actually function as a city within a city with an intricate layout and social infrastructure. It is always shocking to see the level of poverty in which people are able to exist, survive, and more importantly, thrive. This photograph was made as an infrared panorama from train tracks overlooking the area. Ultimately, the same morning’s journey led to the lions’ den, where we encountered the entire pride. There, we witnessed how the brothers that we had tracked earlier would have played as cubs and how their bond would have developed. Which do you prefer - color or black & white? April 2017 - An early morning safari game drive in South Africa led to one of our most amazing experiences as we followed these two brothers out for a stroll. Dawn’s golden hour light perfectly lit their faces allowing us to capture images of them slowly emerging from the brush. The natural lighting was so perfect that it’s hard for me to decide the format I like better.
