I am OBSESSED with you art and love all you do and am extremely intrigued by looking at your work and marveling over the process. If you would be willing to share, I would love to learn more about how you do your art. Especially your monthly reads. Do you stencil each book as you go and then color all of them at the end? Do you have a design already picked out based on what you plan to read? Also, how long does it usually take? Sorry for all the questions I am just deeply in awe of you and your work!

I usually stack up a pile of similarly sized books to make a sketch, then work out the shadows, then the covers and finish with the creases and wear & tear.

For the monthly reads, I don’t plan my reading ahead so I’ll just start the drawing once I know what I finished that month! Those ones will usually take me a few hours, the bigger commissions usually take me maybe 6-8 hours over a few evenings

I’ve had to specify paperbacks because I’ve read very few brand new books this year, which I’m going to try and rectify for next year.

The albums are:

The Record by Boygenius

I would highly recommend all of these things to everybody, but if you’ve only got 3 minutes, listen to the song I’ve Got Me by Joanna Sternberg, which has been in my head for 6 months, alongside the rest of that album

While 90% of my art based social media interaction is still via Tumblr, I do quite like making reels on Instagram, which nobody looks at here because the video quality is so poor.

You can see in the background here that my shelving style is ‘alphabetical at one point, then just shove books in at random’ it means you get a lot of the same author in the same place, but that they could also have a book on an entirely different bookcase.

What I read in March!

Lots of variety, one kids book read to my daughter (I read more than 1 a month to her but this was the only new one!), some fantasy, a brilliant, brilliant sci-fi book where the sci-fi part isn’t important (everyone needs to read everything by RC Sherriff!), a book about walking, a great Jhumpa Lahiri short story collection and a comic you can read free online at Substack.

Also read Carisa Lloyd’s book about grief, coincidentally around the 7th anniversary of my dad dying- I found it enormously helpful, her podcast is great too, as a rec for anyone else in the club.

What’s this book for you?

For me this is the early Discworld books I read in my teens, Douglas Copeland and Chuck Palauniuk books as an angsty student and giant fat books like The Goldfinch and The Mill on the Floss that I bent in half in order to read standing up on a bus or tube as an adult.

Custom Book Prints

Hello!

Not my usual way of drumming up business, but I am putting out this reminder of my custom prints because I’ve just found out that my housing costs are going up by £800 a month (not a typo!) due to various disastrous government policies, which is obviously terrifying.

This is a long way of saying that I’ve opened up a few extra commission slots on my Etsy shop and Tumblr users can get 15% off with SAVE15.
