Big Mama's Dialogue

I've heard a few people lament on how Big Mama is difficult to write because of how she speaks, so I thought I'd share my tips and tricks.

I start out by writing what I intend for her to say without the flowery language added on. For example:

"I look nice in the new jacket I bought."

Doesn't sound like Big Mama at all, but it'll help you have a place to start so you don't have to be intimidated by scrolling through thesaurus.

Now, Big M has a tendency to do the following:

Use outdated American slang (anywhere from the 1920's to the 60's)

Apply alliterations (using the same letter at the beginning of a word to the adjacent/close word)

Use adverbs, so describing words with the end suffix -ly (i.e. softly, mysteriously, quickly)

Sprinkle in a few made-up words

So let's take the base sentence I provided an shape it to Big M's standards.

Instead of word vomiting out all the outdated American slang I know, I'm going to link some resources/websites you all can look at and come back to. She mostly uses 20's slang, so the links are centered around that.

So let's edit our base sentence a little, now it's:

"This new jacket I bought is the cat's meow."

Adding the next layer:

I did mention that Big Mama tended to use both alliterations and adverbs in copious amounts, but don't feel pressured to use both at once in a sentence. If it fits, it fits. If it doesn't, some trimming might be useful. This is why having a base sentence is important, so the intention behind the dialogue isn't lost under all the additions you're adding. So with that in mind, I'm going to alter our example:

"This new jazzy jacket I just bought is the cat's meow."

The last part:

I save the "fake words" part for last, because beginning with them can make your sentences clunky or not make sense. This part really relies on your personal touch or the context and tone of the situation at hand. The example I gave make Big Mama sound like she's preening about her looks, so I'm going to lean into that.

"This newsie-woozie jazzy jackety I just bought is the cat's meow! Grr!"

And for comparison, here's where we started.

"I look nice in the new jacket I bought."

Today was the day! Sandro's birthday! He finally stopped copying Leo, which also meant he knew they he didn't "share" a birthday with – like he stupidly did in his prior years – so he decided to set it up himself! His family would be so proud of him for realizing it and correcting that mistake by setting up the celebration while they were out, and they'd know he was finally getting the gist of it

Sandro went throughout the lair, the sewers, sometimes uptop, looking for anything that wasn't ruined so he could set up his own birthday. Thankfully, he had a few hours to spare, so he found plenty of stuff for decorations. He wasn't the absolute best at decorating stuff, so it wasn't perfect, and he spelled "birthday" wrong, but it didn't matter to him. He also wasn't sure how to bake a cake... but he tried. Three times. He surprisingly got it right the third time and didn't set the kitchen on fire.

He finished getting everything set up, got himself dressed in his favorite outfit, picked out some games and movies, and he waited.

And waited..

And.. waited...

More waiting...

Maybe his brothers were planning a surprise, and it was taking a long time? Yeah, that had to be it! They were planning a party for him! Right? He continued to wait, playing on his phone and mindlessly doomscrolling, sometimes looking back towards the entrance to see if his brothers were coming back yet. Nothing. He felt like he had been there for hours waiting for them – which he probably had been waiting for hours – when he finally heard them all coming back to the lair, laughing and chatting with each other.

Sandro smiled widely and jumped over the back of the couch, his tail wagging behind him while he bounced in place. He watched his brothers walking in, and he had expected them to be carrying something at least remotely related to a birthday party, but they were just carrying their skateboards and a box of pizza from Hueso's. Sandro's smile dropped a bit, bit he was still smiling. Sort of...

"Hey guys! How'd your day go?"

He asked, still smiling at them, hoping deep down that they had been out planning on surprising him or something. The others looked at Sandro, then around at all the decorations.

"It was good... soooo, uh, what's with all the decorations?"

Leo replied, clearly confused as to why there were decorations. He was joking, right? Leo wouldn't just... forget his brother's birthday!..

"I don't remember having any kind of party marked on my calendar... maybe I marked something wrong?"

Seriously? Was Donnie in on it, too? His tone was really confused as well... no, Sandro had to stay positive and hope that this was a big joke. That there would be some big surprise just for him!

"Hey, bud, are you ok? You look kinda... upset about somethin."

Upset? Did he look upset? He didn't think he did. He thought he was keeping it hidden.

"Sandro... are you crying? What's wrong?.."

... crying? He- He wasn't crying! Sandro wiped his hand against his cheek and found that he was, in fact, crying, just like Mikey said.

"Do... do you guys not know what day it is?"

"Uuuhh... Saturday?"

They really didn't know. They didn't know it was his birthday. Now, Sandro wasn't one to throw temper tantrums, even though he was still sort of mentally a child instead of a teenager like his brothers. Tears fell down Sandro's cheeks, and he stared at his brothers, trying to find some sort of sign that this was just a sick joke. But there was nothing. He had copied Leo for so long that they didn't remember what day his birthday was on. Instead of throwing a temper tantrum in front of his brothers, Sandro only ran out of the room and to his own, leaving his brothers in the living room, wondering if they had done something wrong.

Sandro took off his little party hat and threw it to the floor, stepping on it repeatedly and biting his tongue to keep himself from screaming, not out of anger at his brothers for not remembering, but out of his own stupidity. How could he expect them to remember? He had copied Leo for so long that he almost forgot when his own birthday was, but in the back of his mind, he knew when it really was. He was just so... caught up in trying to be like Leo... that he unintentionally made them forget...

Sandro just caused a problem and made all his brothers confused... damn it...

"... I shouldn't have expected them to know or remember..."
