BIOGRAPHICAL OVERVIEW (until i make a carrd)

born 17 october 1760 at covingway manor in shropshire, england to james hadley, earl of mountnessing, and his wife, elizabeth hadley (née morcomb). he had an older brother, george - two years his senior - and two younger sisters, belinda (b. 1770) and grace (b. 1773).

his father was always cold and strict, but was deeply proud of his eldest son and heir. edward, on the other hand, was small and sickly and not worth his notice. his mother, the countess, shared her husband's favoritism. however, edward was always close to his brother - and later, his two younger sisters.

when edward was 11 and george 13, they were out riding together when george's horse was startled and threw him. george died of his injuries leaving their parents bereft. edward always blamed himself for the accident and could tell that his parents - his father in particular - did the same. despite now being the heir, he grew up from that point on with the constant anger and resentment of the earl.

as he grew older, this tension turned into rebellion. because his father cared more about the title and the family reputation than his only remaining son, edward - now at university - determined to wreck what he loved most. he embarked on a career of debauchery, gambling and scandal that thoroughly tarnished the hadley name (and mountnessing title) in the eyes of fashionable society. but edward would never admit that the revenge never felt especially sweet...

when edward was 26, his father died. now the earl and responsible for the family fortune (what was left of it), he realized the full consequences of what he had done. with his younger sisters (the only family he was truly fond of) on the cusp of entering society, his reputation had tarnished their chances of finding good matches or being welcomed in the best circles.

wracked with guilt, he decides that he will mend his reputation with society for the sake of his sisters, doing his best to remove the stain he's brought to the family name. but that is much easier said than done...
