I'm so fascinated with how distinct Lewis makes every facet of who Bob is, while making sure they're still a reflection of each other and not too far away from him as a whole. All these parts of Bob are still Bob, like he's looking into a three way mirror, one side cracked and the other faded.
Because Robert is also the Sentry. Even when he stands taller, his spine a little straighter, there's still a slight tremor in the tips of his fingers. He's no longer curled in on himself but it's in the way he brushes off the sleeves of his suit because he's not sure what to do with his hands. The look in his eyes when he's presented with the task of hurting the only friends he's ever known, suddenly a boy in an ill-fitting suit with nowhere else to go. But now he's strong, he's capable, he's more than he ever was. How dare they not see that? Eventually that boy becomes a dog in a cage who's only instinct is to bite when presented with a leash. What god wouldn't show teeth when the options are to be caged or used?
But Robert is also the Void. How they tilt their heads in the same way, but with different intentions; Bob does it with confusion and curiosity. He wants to understand. The Void does it with condescension. How dare he expect things to be different because he found a bit of power. Power made in a lab that was never meant for him, how the only way he could ever be better was to be an experiment, one no one ever expected him to survive. He still walks like Bob, like he has no regard for himself, but with the attitude of someone who believes everyone else should feel the way he's always been made to. He lashes out just like Bob does at Walker, because being angry and self-depricating feels easier than just sitting with the despair.
The Sentry was once a boy who stood in front of his father's fist to protect his mother. The Void was once a man traveling to Malaysia, heavy with the thought of being a better man but expecting nothing because he was always given nothing. These were always parts of him but the serum gave them shape, made them harder to control. They were always still Robert.
#mcu#thunderbolts#bob reynolds#the sentry#the void#this shit is so so hard to do but it's like every choice he made was intentional#it would've been so easy to just make them as extremely different as possible#just completely far away from everything bob is#lazy but easy#but he made sure to show you these are all the same struggling dude#still trying but in different ways#sorry i watched that interview again where he talks about the way the void's voice sounds
