From #BlackLivesMatter to Complex Intersectionality
Regarding political engagement and activism on social media, hashtags, such as #BlackLivesMatter, have brought issues like race, violence, and police brutality to the public. Social media platforms are becoming crucial for political engagement, especially for minority groups. Platforms like Black Twitter and Latino Twitter have emerged as essential spaces for minority communities to communicate. However, the intersectionality of users brings forward complex stories and perspectives. Journalists and other related media fields must approach these platforms with respect, understanding, and a willingness to learn from the communities before they attempt to report on them. Social media will continue to shape and drive political conversation, but it's essential to remember its possible issues, such as 'echo chambers,' misinformation, and online trolling. Social media users must take steps to learn about communities within the platform and how intersectionality shapes these spaces to be even more diverse.

Intersectionality is a lens through which you can see where power comes and collides, where it interlocks and intersects. It’s not simply that there’s a race problem here, a gender problem here, and a class or LBGTQ problem there. Many times that framework erases what happens to people who are subject to all of these things. -Kimberlé Crenshaw
