A good book, he had concluded, leaves you wanting to reread the book. A great book compels you to reread your own soul.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can also hurt me. Stones and sticks break only skin, while words are ghosts that haunt me. Slant and curved the word-swords fall, it pierces and sticks inside me. Bats and bricks may ache through bones, but words can mortify me. Pain from words has left its’ scar, on mind and hear that’s tender. Cuts and bruises have not healed, it’s words that I remember.

“With Cats, some say, one rule is true: Don’t speak till you are spoken to. Myself, I do not hold with that - I say, you should ad-dress a Cat. But always keep in mind that he Resents familiarity. I bow, and taking off my hat, Ad-dress him in this form: O Cat! But if he is the Cat next door, Whom I have often met before (He comes to see me in my flat) I greet him with an oopsa Cat! I think I’ve heard them call him James - But we’ve not got so far as names.”
T.S. Eliot - Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats

Bibliotherapy: Harry Potter & Talking about Resilience & Anxiety with Kids.
Rowling's Dementors "drain peace, hope and happiness out of the air around them. Even Muggles feel their presence, though they can't see them. Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you. You'll be left with nothing but the worst experiences of your life." (The Prisoner of Azkaban) How do you defend yourself from an attack by a Dementor? By summoning a Patronus, the light-filled embodiment of hope, love & resilience.

Where I Work: Oliver Jeffers
This is my studio in Brooklyn. The building was originally a factory, so it has lots of character and really suits how I work. Given the versatile nature of what I do, every day is different, and my studio space reflects that. I balance four separate branches of making art within this space (picture book making, illustration, working on various self-initiated projects, and painting), and every one of these demands something different. As you can see, I like to write a lot of things on lists and then take great pleasure in crossing said things off said lists.
Oliver Jeffers’s latest picture book is The Day The Crayons Quit.
