Being the youngest child of a large, Irish family, Marlene was doted on by their parents and incessantly babied by their four older siblings. The complex this cushioned upbringing nurtured is that Marlene has an inherent naivety about them, but a strong desire for independence. Conversely, their commitment to make their own way in the world combined with their unerring and childlike optimism has made them quite successful in life. People tend to underestimate them, but Marlene has learned to use this to their benefit. Nobody expects someone so innocent and free-spirited to be coding information for the Order into their newspaper articles.

FABIAN PREWETT Fabian and Marlene were close friends during school. After a few years of mutual pining, Fabian was the one who finally set Marlene up with Gideon in their seventh year. On 12 February, 1979 at 9:47 PM a group of Death Eaters attacked the home of young Sybill Trelawney, murdering her and her family for being “blood traitors”. It began a month-long string of increasingly violent and public attacks, culminating with the execution-style killing of one Peter Pettigrew in the middle of Diagon Alley on the 24th at 12:01 PM. The Daily Prophet would later refer to the month as Bloody February, a term that would stick with the public, and the Minister for Magic, Millicent Bagnold, would dedicate the second Monday of every February thereafter to remembering those who died during the First Wizarding War. Families and friends mourned, and there was increased public outcry to bring Dark Witches and Wizards to justice. Barty Crouch Sr, head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, would enact laws allowing and encouraging Aurors to use the Unforgivable Curses and all other forms of lethal force against them. For some, it marked the true beginning of the war. The impact was undeniably profound.

On 31 July, 1981 Lily Evans gave birth to a healthy, happy baby boy. He would be named Harry James Potter, and he would not bear a lightning bolt scar.

LONDON, 1985 The war rages on. The Ministry is straining beneath public pressure to bring the Death Eaters to heel, meanwhile they work to infiltrate its ranks and bring the Wizarding World to its knees. It’s everything the Order of the Phoenix can do to quietly keep the balance. Their actions are the only thing stopping the Death Eaters from taking over completely, but they can gain no traction themselves. It’s a stalemate. The fate of the world rests on the head of a pin, and no one knows when or which way it will fall.
