As someone on the gender spectrum, I try to understand how people with different gender identities think and feel. I know I might still be ignorant or careless in some ways, and I may sometimes make mistakes... but I want to keep learning and do my best to help create an inclusive space for everyone. I don’t know if it helps, but I want you to know—I’m here with you, Ulan. I truly hope the Japanese fandom becomes more inclusive. At the very least, you’ve opened my eyes.

If you care about queer inclusion in fandom, I hope you’ll share this

Today, after tweeting and retweeting about biphobia, homophobia, and trans rights, I noticed that someone had soft-blocked me. While disappointing, that action itself isn’t a problem at all. Everyone has the right to choose whom they interact with online.

What really hurts is that this incident made it painfully clear that this artist is someone who tolerates discriminatory structures and behaviors, and strongly rejects being called out on them. There’s an intense feeling of shock. “Wait… they’re like that, too?💔”

Just a few days ago, we exchanged pleasant messages during a fan event. I was kindly able to print their art, and I had previously bought their book. Those interactions had felt genuinely warm and kind.

But what I’m trying to say is that this is the reality of fandom culture in Japan.

As a queer person, I can’t safely and freely enjoy fan works. Even when sharing the same interests and love for characters and games, queer individuals in Japan are often quietly excluded.

In many circles, staying included still means ignoring discriminatory attitudes. It’s an unspoken yet painfully real wound that queer fans are forced to carry every day. Anyone who is queer themselves can likely understand the deep pain this causes.

I’ve said this before, but I need to repeat it: many queer artists in Japan end up isolated in such an environment.

These incidents might seem small from the outside, but they leave lasting wounds. Being queer itself is treated as something “troublesome”. It’s a quiet, yet very real exclusion.

I’m sharing this experience to document it. I hope it reaches others who might feel similarly isolated, and I especially want international artists to understand just how exclusive parts of Japanese fandom are.

Solidarity can cross borders. If you come across a queer Japanese artist who seems hurt or alone, I hope you’ll gently remind them that they’re not alone.

I’m just a bit tired, so I might be a little quiet for a while — but I’m still here, and happy to reply to DMs.
