Black Mirror, S5
“Striking Vipers”
A story about what happens when you forget to say “no homo”
“Smithereens”
Yet another “What if phones but too much” story in which… Wait a sec is that Moriarty???
“Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too”
Wow this episode of Hannah Montana is really dark

okay so I’ve been seeing the reactions to black mirror s5 and I think most of you are missing the point
striking vipers isn’t about repressed homosexuality, or “technology is bad”. It’s questioning where we draw the lines between what is considered “reality” and what isn’t. If Danny and Karl enjoy being with each other in the game but not in “real” life, are they really attracted to each other? Does is count as cheating? (it also made a great bridge between the present technology we know, and the future tech of most black mirror episodes. it’s easy to see how current vr could become that, and that would turn into what we see in episodes like san junipero and playtest.)
smithereens isn’t saying kids use their phones too much. smithereens is… complicated, actually, there’s a lot of subtext going on there. but primarily it’s about the way companies use technology to control people. the people making the tech and running the apps/sites are in direct control of so much, and they do in fact try to make them as “addicting” as possible. how many of us have gotten caught scrolling endlessly, looking for the next post to entertain them? I know I have. It becomes habit to get on these apps and scroll for hours, whether we’re truly enjoying it or not. Obviously texting and driving is an extreme example, but people do it. also the police believing the gun was fake, just because they heard chris say so through their spyware. he was lying, but they took it at face value.
rachel, jack and ashley too is another slightly complicated one. there’s the idea of people and situations in the media not truly being as they appear to the public, and the idea of artificial intelligence being used unethically. the truth is, there are probably so many famous stars who are in (less extreme but) similar situations to ashley; controlled by a contract they got into at a young age, and by people they cannot get away from. and none of them can speak out about it.
black mirror is getting deeper, not shittier. you just have to look a little further into it.
