What Would We Do Differently
So now that we are at the end of our project and have successfully created a selfie stick tripod, we wanted to go back and think about what we would do differently if we were doing this project all over again.
The biggest thing that we would do differently is that we would continue to try and find a way to make the selfie stick work without needing to set a timer on your phone. Despite all of our best efforts, we were unable to actually make this part of the assignment come together, but if we had a bit more time and maybe a larger budget then we could have possibly figured it out. Secondly, we would try to extend our meeting time once we had all of our individual parts done so that we could have finished all the rest of the work in that meeting, instead of having to have a second meeting later on.
Ultimately, however, we are very pleased with the whole way that this project went. We all worked really well together and were able to contribute in our own unique ways. We are also very proud of the selfie stick tripod that we were able to complete only using low cost items that could be found around the house. At the end of the day, despite some minor setbacks, we believe that this project was a success and had a lot of fun doing it too.

Group Meeting
Last Friday (February 23rd) we held a group meeting at Allyson’s house for this project. We discussed that everyone was to have their assigned parts completed and ready for assembling and final touches before then. The meeting ran for an hour and a half, with a majority of the project complete.
During the meeting, we attempted to attach the dowel that would touch the phone screen to take the picture to the selfie stick. The only problem we ran into was the pointer itself; which is outlined in this post here posted by Titi.
We were unable to complete everything so we held one final meeting where we assembled the tripod and tested its stability and how well everything had worked together; no adjustments were needed. We took our pictures and videos explaining the selfie stick tripod and made sure that we were all in agreement about our final product. Afterwards, we also discussed how we would order the posts on our blog and who would post about what information.

Button Problem :(
I was in charge of making the mechanics of the button on the selfie stick.
The Materials Needed:
- Wooden Dowel
- 2 popsicle sticks
- Drill
- 1 Q-Tip cut in half
- Glue/Tape
- Selfie Stick
- Strong scissors or X-Acto Knife
- Screen touchable gloves
Step 1:
Drill a hole at the end of the popsicle stick and the broomstick (of the selfie stick) that is slightly wider than the diameter of the Q-Tip stick.
Step 2:
Once the hole is drilled in, align the popsicle stick hole, with the broomstick hole and place the stick part of the Q-Tip in the hole (so then the cotton part is on the outside of the popsicle stick and the broomstick).
Step 3:
Put glue on where the stick and the broomstick touch, but make sure THE GLUE DOESN’T TOUCH THE POPSICLE STICK! If you get glue on the popsicle stick then the button won’t move. SO let the glue dry.
Step 4:
While waiting for the glue to dry, you can grab your wooden dowel, and measure the length you need it so that it’s slightly shorter than the broomstick.  Cut the dowel to the desired length and then glue the other end of the popsicle sticks to the dowel. One end of the popsicle stick should be moveable and attached to the broomstick, and the other end is glued and not moveable to the dowel.
Step 5:
Now that you have your moving and dried dowel button, now we just attach a touchable glove to the end of the dowel. *Now this is where we ran into to trouble*
Where everything went wrong:
The reason I didn’t include pictures of my step is that we didn’t end up including this part of the project. The mechanics worked, but we couldn’t get the dowel to be touch screen sensitive. We tried a lot of different methods; 1. using a touchable glove, 2. end of a stylus pen, 3. Aluminum foil... NONE of the methods worked. We looked up other DIY stylus pen videos, but none of them worked on our wooden dowel. We realized, because of science we needed to use a conductive material in order for it to work (wood is not conductive). So we decided to not include this part, and instead of having a button press the camera button, you just set a timer. We suggest that if you did want to include some sort of button, maybe using some sort of metal rod (or any conductive material) instead of the wooden dowel. Although we couldn’t get this part to work, I think that the timer is an easier method, and lowers the cost of this whole project by a couple of bucks. I think that the dowel at the end of the day, would’ve been a bit too bulky, but also would’ve had to be detachable to be able to insert the selfie stick into the tripod. So in the end, I’m glad it didn’t work because it would’ve caused more problems in the future.

Tripod Process and Materials
Tumblr media
The part of the project that i was in charge of was constructing the tripod that will hold the selfie stick . Pictures are added to certain steps that I found worked better with a visual!
Materials (What I used)
-3 broom sticks (or dowels )
- A wooden piece to act as a base for the tripod’s legs
-3 tennis balls
-PVC piping (or any other cylindrical tube. I had this laying around the house)
-screws
-masking or painters tape will do
-hot glue
Tools
-drill
-hot glue gun
Steps/ Process
Step 1:
Take your wooden piece that will act as a base, make sure it it sturdy enough so that the selfie stick will not have it coolaps. It should be thick enough to drill a hole though.
On the wrong side of the base, trace out a triangle and locate the center of the triangle. This will help with indicating where the piping should be attached
Tumblr media
Step 2:
Take the PVC piping (or any cylindrical tube) and cut it on an angle and cut the length of the piping to 1.5 to 2 inches in length. This will allow the legs of the tripod to be on an angle rather that being straight down.
Tumblr media
Step 3:
Hot glue the small PVC piping to the board with hot glue, that is used as a stabilizer. When the glue is dry, drill in a screw or 2 into the base and the piping. This will give the PVC piping a stronger attachment
PS: The hot glue was not strong enough so I do not recommending that this should be the basis of your attachments.
Step 4:
After locating the centre of the base, drill a hole that is the same size of the diameter of the selfie stick, this is where the selfie stick will slide in to the tripod.
Tumblr media
 Step 5:
Next, take your three tennis balls and cut slits into them and place them on the handle end of the broomstick. Leave the end where the broom attaches because that is needed later.
Step 6:
Next, take the 3 broom sticks and put masking tape or painters tape around the end where the broom attaches to the stick. This will give the stick more grip when inserting it into the PVC piping.
If the tube of the PVC piping is slightly bigger, add more layers around the ends to help it fill in the gaps.
Step 7:
That’s all! The final thing to do is attach the broom sticks tot he PVC piping tubes by twisting them in. This allows the tripod to be easily detachable and easy to store.

Selfie Sticks FTW!!!
I made the selfie stick portion of the assignment.
The materials I needed were:
-one broom stick
-one dustpan
-one screw
-one wing nut
-one velcro strap
-tape
The tools I needed to create the selfie stick were:
-Dremel
-chop saw
-drill
-pocket knife
Step 1:
Cut your broom stick down to the desire length using a chop saw. For our assignment, I chose a length of 2 feet.
Step 2:
Cut down your dustpan to the desire shape. Remember this will hold your phone so make sure you don’t make it too small or it will be too flimsy and/or won’t fit the phone. I chose to outline the phone with an inch of room all around to get my desire shape and size.
Step 3:
Drill a hole that is the same size as your screw approximately one centimetre from the edge of the broom stick.
Step 4:
Using the same drill bit size as before, drill a hole through the dustpan handle where you want your screw to go through. Make sure that the screw will be able to go through cleanly from one side to the other.
Step 5:
Line up the holes you made by placing the end of the broom stick alongside the dustpan handle and put your screw through the whole thing.
Step 6:
Tighten down your wing nut on the screw. This will allow for the adjustability that the dustpan needs so you can chose the selfie stick angle based on your needs.
Step 7:
Attach tape to the end of the broom stick that you will be holding for a comfortable grip.
Step 8:
Cut two slits in the dustpan, using your pocket knife, based on the size of your phone. These slits will allow for the velcro strap to go through, which will ultimately hold down your phone.
Step 9:
Insert velcro strap. Check to make sure your phone is held securely by the strap.
Step 10:
Cheer because you just made a selfie stick using low cost items. Now go out and use it and make everyone around you jealous with your super awesome selfie stick.
That was my process for making my low cost selfie stick. I hope you like it!!

WORK WORK WORK!!
We distributed the work for the project based on our strengths that we discussed during a small meeting.
Titi decided to take on the role of making the dowel that will press on the phone to take the picture. She was also assigned to sketch out the ideas that we have for our selfie-stick tripod because of her artistic abilities.
Allyson’s role is to make the selfie stick itself, due to her wonderful ideas she proposed to the group and her passion for selfie sticks.
My contribution to the group is creating the tripod because I have many of the materials for the tripod at home. Also, I am also in charge of creating the blog because of my daily usage of Tumblr.
We are going to meet up in one week with our parts assembled to put it all together.
WOOHOO!!! :D

The Behind the Scenes!
Tumblr media
It’s always important to sketch out an idea of what we want to do so then we can get all the desired materials, and also make sure everyone in the group is on the same page. So I sketched out our plan for the selfie stick and thought of possible materials for the actual project. We decided to do a similar look to an actual selfie stick, but also want to keep in mind cost, and weight. We thought that we could use broomsticks for the base of the selfie stick, with a dustpan as a holder for the phone. We thought of these as light and cheap materials that anyone had access to. One aspect of the project that we were concerned about was how to make some sort of button. I thought of the idea of using a wooden dowel that is attached to 2 popsicle sticks, but at the end of the popsicle sticks, there would be a hole. The hole would hold some sort of stick or q-tip and act as our mode of movement for the dowel. At the end of the dowel, we thought of adding a phone touchable glove, and tape that onto the other end of the dowel, so it would be able to take the picture.  So then the way the whole selfie stick would function would be by pushing the wooden dowel forward, which would then make the touchless glove to hit the phone and take a picture! The tripod was a fairly easy concept to integrate into this project because we thought of just creating some sort of stand with a wooden piece at the top, then drill a hole the same size of the broomstick. So then we can slide the selfie stick through the piece of wood and would act as a tripod. Hope all of this works out..!!

The Beginning
Our group got together on February 8, 2018 in MMEDIA Tutorial 10. We are very excited to embark on this journey together to create a multimedia tool with a low cost budget. We are thinking of ideas and working together in order to choose the best possible creation that we can think of. We hope to be able to bring a new innovation that can help developing countries to enjoy new multimedia devices. Here’s to hoping!
