This is my new favorite discovery.
I downloaded all the Master’s voice files and one of them is just all four voices saying “No.” I don’t know if it was used in the game in some obscure dialogue branch or if it was a cut line, but if anyone knows the context behind it, let me know.
This would make for a great reaction to anything Fallout-related that’s so bad that all you can say is “no”. There’s a lot of those things for this series I can think of.

So, I saw an interview with the show’s writers and it gave me a lot of thoughts regarding fallout, narrative themes, and colonialism.
Tumblr media
First off, I consider myself pretty misanthropic, but even I know “people are evil and innately bad and destructive” isn’t the theme of fallout. That’s doing a lot to lift the blame off of American imperialism and how *that* is the great evil the series warns us about, not “everyone is like this”. The first game opens with us seeing American soldiers executing prisoners of war as America annexes Canada to take petroleum and uranium: it’s clearly about American evil and military/imperial evil, not something innate to all people.
Second, fallout is unique *because* you see “civilization” in a post-apocalyptic setting. Tim Cain has a quote about fallout 1 where he said “my concern in this story is the ethics of life in the aftermath of nuclear war, not building a better laser gun”, and that’s pretty central to fallout. Rather than stagnating, it tries to show us how life would adapt and move on from the apocalypse. The world will change, yes, but it will change in that the apocalypse will become more distant. The future won’t look much like the day the bombs dropped.
Third, what a colonial view to have! “Where’s civilization? Where’s *everything*?” is what you got from westerns? You think railroads and churches being built in recently stolen territory (as is common in Wild West stories) is “civilization”? Wanna tell us what you think America was pre-colonization, Wagner?
It shows this perspective that doesn’t truly want to admit the flaws of America, either willfully or (more likely) due to ignorance. It’s a sheltered perspective, one that doesn’t know history, one that doesn’t know other cultures, one that doesn’t even know the themes of the story it’s writing for…
Edit: this next quote doesn’t have anything to do with those points, it just feels wrong to me to write so spitefully for a series…

I’ve created this flyer in an attempt to bring more attention to the fundraiser of a family I’ve been in contact with for a couple of weeks now, Maram, her husband Ahmed, and their three young children, Habiba, Kareem, and Mohammed.
To hear Maram’s story in her own words, please follow the link to her GoFundMe, donate, and share with everyone you can. Donations have slowed down. Every second counts, and every dollar counts towards helping this family survive.
€672/€30,000 as of 04/28/2024

All the refutes of the criticism of the tv show I have seen on this site amount to the OP failing to consider Why someone might write something and instead acting like the Fallout series just does shit on its own and Bethesda has no means of control over it. Responding to "why isn't civilization advancing in Bethesda titles?" with "it WAS advancing! but those meanie vault-tec people nuked it!!1!!" is the worse dogshit take I've ever seen. uh yeah. but riddle me this: who wrote Vault Tec doing that? huh? who wrote that? who added that to the lore? Vault-Tec isn't a real-life cosmic entity that Bethesda has no control over, the script didn't just magically appear on the page. Bethesda are making dogshit narrative choices and that is what people are criticising. The intent of the author was to destroy civilisation via Vault-Tec, or The Insitute, or the Scorch Beast, or whatever new bullshit Bethesda comes up with, and people are justified in asking why Bethesda--the author--is obsessed with this

Hey folks. Making this post today to ask for some help.
I'm a mentally ill trans woman currently going through some struggles. Finals in school, car broke down, and general mental health problems.
I'm not in particularly dire straits yet, thankfully. I'm going to be getting groceries this sunday with some friends' help. But in the meantime I am essentially out of food at home. I can't afford meals while I'm at school either, so I'm looking for help getting something to eat while I'm on campus the next couple days. Even like 10 bucks so I could buy a sandwich or something would be tremendously appreciated.
My PayPal is [email protected]. mind the deadname if you choose to give a little to help.
Thanks all, and I hope the spring is treating you nicely.

It's also bizarre cuz the show even ends with power getting turned back on- but only after blowing up everything that came before. I've complained about that already, but it seems like even in the show they still wanted their hopeful ending about rebuilding or whatever- so seeing all the showrunners insist that the show is about how humans are hopelessly caught up in a cycle of endless violence... Ok.
@mutfruit-salad pointed out that fo3 canonically ends with the capital wasteland getting clean water and the chance to rebuild, fo4 ends with the institute destroyed along with the people who were holding the commonwealth back, and basically even bethesda's fallout games usually have hope and progress as a major theme even if it's only right at the end.
so the idea that "we will veer towards destruction" and "our best efforts to restart civilization are doomed" being fallout's "inevitable message" is just stupid no matter how you look at it. it feels like a running gag to me. i know bethesda is notorious for forgetting their own lore but do they really care so little about even their own fallout games tha- i dont even need to finish the question, we already know the answer lmao

if I say anything else on this topic I need you all to behead me but at this rate what’s the point of making new fallout. If they just are completely averse to showing the progress of the world and doing anything with the setting other than brand recognition because it all just follows the exact same plotline and plot beats why set it in another time. Why even bother if it’s basically just going to be the exact same “well war never changes so why should anything we do” shit every single time. I don’t get it.

Someone pointed out that the meeting to drop the bombs separated reppcon and robco, so that’s before 2075 when house bought reppcon.
So yeah, why did house need to calculate the bombs falling? Why did he wait last minute to get the chip made? Why didn’t vault tec just give him the vault on the strip if it was the deal?
Following the timeline my ass
