Not really looking forward to what Adi Shankar will do to Duke, specially after tweets like these:
Tumblr media
And his response to Broussard's tweet.
Tumblr media
This also reminds me of how people talk about Duke, like what is Duke about and how he came to be.
Because even with the comedy and sense of humor, you have to wonder if there's a way to make him work today and avoid certain traps of modern writing like "erm okay?".
Something some people agree on is that some parts of Duke can be played straight.
A good example being the environment or mood being gritty and dark, specially since it is about guns and aliens taking over and even kidnapping women and doing horrible things.
But you could allow Duke doing some occasional one liners that don't turn down the mood and maybe have some details like an alien with boobs hanging out.
Some places with silly billboards with joke names here and there but it's not that focused or something.
An idea i thought of is going the route of a Leslie Nielsen movie where there's absurd elements but they're played straight, specially in an age where everything is ironic or self-aware and winks at the audience.
Because even if Duke isn't dramatic or so serious, i like to think you can have some grittyness to Duke which can even help the absurdity a bit.
In fact, Blood was kinda like this but with horror and taking place in an older time and with religious elements, even if the humor felt smaller.
Whereas Shadow Warrior is probably way less serious than Duke, for some obvious reasons.
Because Duke references stuff that the devs are clearly into.
Even if not as serious as the movies it references, it's clear the devs grew up with 80's action movies and based Duke mostly on them.
Like how plenty of iconic game series were the result of devs being inspired by the works they love.
Maybe there's some argument that 2010's and 20's doesn't have enough interesting stuff to reference, specially in the field of cool action movies.
I'm sure there could be good ideas but Adi won't get them.

God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers (Duke Nukem fans)
Should've made a post about this when the news JUST came out but I forgot XD
Anyway, you all know that Adi Shankar bought the IP for Duke Nukem, reading what he has in mind for Duke honestly upsets me.
And it's baffling too, Duke's story is the simplest there is and Adi somehow concluded that he's a "middle finger to everybody" (I think you switched up Duke Nukem with Postal 2!). Duke was never a parody or a "middle finger to everybody", Duke Nukem is a homage to 80s-90s action movie heroes. The only reason why the plot and lore of Duke is crazy and tongue in cheek is because movies from that era were like that. People need to learn the difference between a parody and simply referencing something.
What upsets me the most honestly has to be him deciding that nobody should tell him what to do. His ego is so far up his ass, I genuinely need him to get humbled ASAP.
Well, Duke fans, I suggest you all prepare for the upcoming new fans from Adi Shankar's Duke Nukem. Now I say this because fans of Adi's DMC basically called DMC game fans stupid and media illiterate. Just- Just mentally prepare yourselves.

Late, but happy 25th Deus Ex!
One of my favorite games of all time, if I could experience Deus Ex for the first time again, I definitely would.

I've been seeing a lot of people misusing the term "Boomer Shooter" and here's my take on it
Postal 2 is NOT a boomer shooter. If you want to refer to old FPS games, just use Retro FPS please!
Boomer Shooter refers to doomclones and quakeclones. It doesn't have to have retro aesthetics, it just has to have the format like doom or quake. (Which is basically FPS of course, abusing the hell out of keycards, secrets, occassionally fast paced and exploration)
You can use Retro FPS to refer to old Boomer Shooters.
You can't use Boomer Shooter to refer to every Retro FPS.
Thank you if you took the time to read this 🫶

I did not live through the 90s to experience this game at its peak, however I'm still glad I got to experience it at all
I got into UT and Unreal in a terrible timing, literally exactly when they announced that they'll pull the plug on servers and will be delisting it
One of my favorite memories was when I managed to find a UT '99 demo and boy was I overjoyed since I couldn't get UT anywhere
Being a Quake fan before playing UT, I ended up liking UT more than Quake XD

Unreal Tournament (1999)
After trying for so long, I finally got my friend to play through UT for the first time! Luckily he found it fun, lol.
Do you have some memories with his absolute classic?

Here's to the engine that made me appreciate old games and their little details more. Despite it not being as popular as its competitor, to me, it's still a wonder how much it can do for its time. The build engine has genuinely made me more appreciative of tiny details in retro games. Knowing that they have to go to that extent just to make a reflection on the mirror or a spinning light in an era where lighting and such is still baked. The build engine has a very special place in my heart. It marks a beautiful era where they where transitioning from 2.5D to 3D. It gives build engine games such charming attributes. Interactable things that people would often skip and their attempts at doing full 3D with voxels. It's just so beautiful to me.
And with that, I say,
Happy 28th birthday, Build Engine.

considering rebranding this blog or just straight up deleting it, sadly my retro games hyperfixation has died off cause I'm not really that crazy about silly little games from the 90s anymore
I also don't have the time to play more games like I used to so I don't have anymore material to ramble about
I guess an update I can give is that I got quake II and SC:Chaos theory but like I said I can't really ramble about them as much as I used to since my fixation and excitement for those have sort of.. died off
I also started a new unreal gold run that I haven't finished, I got like all 4 classic mortal kombat games there's that I guess???
I'll just let time tell what the future of this blog will be
