J2 Tinhat Timeline

Based on the one I created here long ago but separated into individual years this time around (from 2015 to present).

Please PLEASE comment/message me/etc. with any moments you think should be included!

I’m starting out of order (for no particular reason) with:

2017 -

*note: content within each year is not yet listed chronologically

Minncon:

Jared equates obstacles/fights he and Jensen have dealt with in their relationship to obstacles/fights that married couples + romantic partners deal with.

(parallel to seacon 2016, once that year has been added)

Jensen (on his relationship with Jared): “I think the first time the idea hit me that this was going to be a really solid relationship was the first time we got into a fight.”

Jared: “-when you see something tested...when someone is fighting with their boyfriend or girlfriend or husband or wife, like you know what? These are the moments you figure out if it’s worth it, because you are going to have struggles, and you are going to have times that suck. Is it worth it to carry on? Do you want to carry on?”

Also-

Jared gestures toward Jensen, saying, “-my spou-, my buddy (...)”

Seacon:

Jared refers to a singular trailer that he and Jensen share (one of many times the Js have done this)-

Jared: “And they’re, like, knocking on our trailer.”

Houscon:

Jared (about himself and Jensen and the time constraints of filming etc.): “We didn’t see our family last week. (…) but that being said, our kids get to see their parents doing something that they love.”

Nolacon:

Jensen talks about household chores and says, referencing himself and Jared during his response, “It is split up. When we’re not there, she handles it. When we come home, she’s like ‘here’s the keys to everything,’” seemingly implying that the Js are in one household together some percentage of the time and that they’re often given their space, just the two of them, when they’re home.

Honcon:

Jared and Jensen wear matching shirts that Jensen both picked out and purchased for them prior to the panel.

*noteworthy because….Jensen dressing Jared = the best thing ever, and also Jared/Jensen matchy match moments = the best thing ever # 2.

Also-

The ‘like you always do’ slip happens during a J2 conversation that Jared can’t help but turn into something dirty (of course 😏).

Jensen: “I went in pretty quick-”

Jared: “-like you always do.”

*extreme oops face courtesy of Jared followed by a significant and lingering look exchanged between both of the Js which ironically is much more so what makes this a tinhatty moment than the actual dirty comment itself.

Nashcon:

Jensen steps forward to intimately massage Jared’s head during an emotional moment-

Pittcon:

Both Jensen and Jared use the word “contract” while talking about kid-planning. Jared talks about needing to be “-specific in the contract.” As in, “-I don’t mean two MORE [kids]. I mean two TOTAL.”

Jensen then refers to his own situation by saying that it was a “-loose contract that apparently held no water.”

Jib:

Jensen intimately embraces Jared while singing “don’t you cry no more” (from Carry on my Wayward Son).

Also-

(@ the Orion concert) Jensen points directly at Jared while singing.

“-let me be your fortress, when the night winds are driving on…be the one to light the way, bring you home.”

AHBL:

Jensen touches his pointer finger to Jared’s hand, which is exactly how he and his ‘wife’ privately say ‘I love you’ to each other according to what Jensen himself publicly shared with us during Vancon-2016.

*note that this is only one well-known example and that there have been many more of these specific finger touches between the Js both before and after AHBL 2017.

DCcon:

Jared (about the Padackles Turks & Caicos vacation): “[Jensen] knows, because we went there as a family.”

Chicon:

Jensen discusses his relationship with Jared using undeniably ‘couple’-y phrases-

“There’s a support system that exists within us for each other. It allows us to create and work hard. It allows us to love. It allows us to be open. I’m very thankful to have that with someone else.”

Also-

Jared: “I don’t think Sam eats a lot of pie.”

Jensen: “No, I would say, yeah, pretty much! I don’t think Jared does either!”

*note: we’re all on the same page when it comes to the whole ‘eating pie’ metaphor (of the, um, sexual variety) are we not?

I think we are.

ComicCon:

The world is forever blessed by this E.W exclusive photo of Jared posing in a very, um…interesting way with Jensen!

SDCC:

The Js take part in a ‘newlyweds’ type game where they demonstrate to the world yet again just how thoroughly they know and understand each other.

Jensen: “Jared is right! It’s beef jerky.”

*note: Misha doesn’t do well…surprise, surprise!

Although, in his defense, he does very accurately summarize the vibe of the whole thing in relation to the J’s answering correctly for each other-

“That’s what true love looks like!”

ACLfest (Austin):

The Js are filmed by Tiffany Resig sharing a romantic little ride in a pedicab (bike taxi) and looking like the most obvious husbands.

June 1st:

Jared posts a picture of him and Jensen out to dinner and captions it “date night.”

October 1:

Jensen poses in front of a mural that says “love is love,” a well known LGBT+ slogan, and then later that same day, Jared poses in front of a mural that says “love will win,” captioning it with “every time.”

August 20th:

A candid clip is filmed of the Js during their down time on set, and the only thing we can all talk about is the blatant lack of any personal space whatsoever between the two of them.

I know what you mean. There are many things I can’t explain away and you just mentioned the best of them. I’m feeling nostalgic, so how about we look at them a little?

1. “Jensen’s expressions - he absolutely adores Jared!!“

Right? The sheer love and adoration in Jensen’s eyes moves me to my core. That is not how I look at my friends, not even the closest ones. How lucky they are to have each other!

2. “the handholding at MinnCon - whichever angle I look at it from why would Jensen continue to keep his hand like that!!”

The fan says to Jensen that he’s her favourite and Jensen just sneaks his hand to hold Jared’s while he does the comedy elbows for the audience. I can’t tell you how much I love this moment. (Another angle)

3. “damn is he loveable - a fandom that thinks you are gay for each other and you say about your co-star that damn is he loveable!! Sounds smitten rather than bff!”

What I see here is both of them being incredibly ballsy. Not only did they dare to share these videos, Jensen caption this kissy video like that as well. I can still hardly believe this actually happened. (My post here)

4. “Move to Austin with rumours - why 5 mins away?”

You know how one sometimes gets the irresistable urge to respond with a vague “For reasons”? This is one of those moments. Just kidding! Of course there’s something to read on the matter. Can we talk about Jared and Jensen were literally made for each other

Hi darling! Oh, can we..?! Hell. Yes. Let’s do this.

First, let’s talk about how they clicked immediately. I mean, Jared asked Jensen out on a date right after their audition together…

They got real handsy real fast…

They’ve gotten more subtle since then….usually…

Just kidding, apparently they got less subtle…

Okay, calm the hell down you two. No wait, don’t. I like this.

Their lives are completely intertwined…

I live in Austin with my husband, Jensen.

And can we talk about the goddamn hearteyes???!?!

It’s just disgusting, really.

And they do this a lot…

What other bodily fluids do you two like to share??

So if we’re just getting little glimpses of them here and there and WE can see that they are soulmates…I cannot imagine what it’s like behind closed doors. (Just kidding. I will imagine until the day I die.)

Fred & Ginger

were conveniently leaked to the fans in a downloadable folder under the curious name of Fred & Ginger in 2010

Do you know who Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers were?

Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were iconic dance partners who made motion pictures together from 1933–1949 (x).

During those years, their movies embodied the many facets of archetypical and idyllic love: there was courtship, seduction, teasing, challenge, wittiness, all danced and acted for the enjoyment of the viewers, mostly women.

However, despite the happy image the pair of actors always passed on the silver screen, off camera they were really not that close.

On screen they were the world’s most romantic couple, but away from the cameras Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were a lot less friendly, as Astaire’s biographer Michael Freedland reveals:

In fact, (…) they didn’t want to be a regular act at all. More than that, they didn’t actually like each other very much, and needed a great deal of persuasion to work together time after time.

(…) it was difficult not to read between the lines and from the expression of exasperation on his face almost 30 years after they had last worked together.

“They met on the set. Did their thing. And parted. No animosity. Very polite, but you’d think they had just met. After the years of association, the years of the closeness, you’d think there would be a real rapport. None.” — film director, Charles Walters.

Fred: “We worked together. That’s all”

FAMOUS DUOS WHO COULDN’T STAND EACH OTHER

Friction between the iconic dance partners began with a dress: Ginger Rogers insisted on wearing it; Fred Astaire wound up covered with feathers. But the gentlemanly Astaire never spoke harshly.

“Oh Ginger! She always wanted to be boss”

was all he told his biographer. When the author asked Rogers about the Astaire-Rogers magic, she eyed him coldly and said,

“You mean Rogers-Astaire”

Bonus:

This whole notion of archetypical romance that Fred & Ginger represented started when they starred in a movie called The Gay Divorcee. The movie is an adaptation of a musical originally called The Gay Divorce, which had no other than Cole Porter’s classic song “Night and Day” written for a duet between Fred and Clair Luce (in the movie adaptation, Night & Day ended up being Fred & Ginger’s first romantic duet together).

The musical/movie tells the story of a society girl who plots a fake adultery and then falls in love with the man who she believes is the one hired to play the role of her lover.

Cole Porter is a famous gay icon who lived in a glass closet most of his life, being married to a friend for bearding purposes: 

In 1918, he met Linda Lee Thomas, a rich, Louisville, Kentucky-born divorcée eight years his senior. She was beautiful and well-connected socially; the couple shared mutual interests, including a love of travel, and she became Porter’s confidant and companion. The couple married the following year. She was in no doubt about Porter’s homosexuality, but it was mutually advantageous for them to marry. For Linda, it offered continued social status and a partner who was the antithesis of her abusive first husband. For Porter, it brought a respectable heterosexual front in an era when homosexuality was not publicly acknowledged. Obviously Jared’s whole ‘I don’t kiss Jensen…in public’ statement from wayyyy back when has become one of those super widespread and lighthearted-cutesy little moments that literally all of us J2-folk love to reference in our tinhatty posts (I’ve probably thrown it into a solid dozen of my own, if not more).

BUT…

You know what I was just pondering?

Is it not at least a tiny bit unusual that when asked about whether or not it was kinda weird to work with Sandy (Jared’s GF, beard, at the time) when they shared a real-life romantic (fauxmantic…*AHEM*) relationship, Jared proceeded to then compare that example to working with Jensen??

Like, ‘well, it’s pretty much par for the course as an actor…you know, and I mean I work every single day with Jensen-’

(except he called Jensen ‘Jen,’ 😊🥰 which I always adore so very very much)

His actual words for that lil snippet were: “I’m obviously very close to Jen, too.”

Lol and then he immediately caught himself and evidently decided to go with the ‘I meant - *insert other thing* (platonic best buddyhood, in this case) explanation combined with the ‘outright stating actual reality but in a playful/joking manner approach:

“But…I don’t kiss Jensen…”

“-in public.”

Absolutely love folks discovering the original Star Trek in all its fabulousness!

I finished my first ever watch of Star Trek: The Original Series last night and wow, what a journey.

I’ve loved all the Trek I’ve watched before, but for years I avoided TOS. I had watched a handful of episodes and not really been into it, and I didn’t want to deal with any sexism or racism or other remnants of the 60s. I bought into the Kirk Drift and thought he was an asshole, and I didn’t want to watch 79 episodes of an asshole.

But after finishing Lower Decks my husband and I decided to dive in and watch all of it. I expected to adore Spock and groan at the special effects. I expected to roll my eyes a lot.

Friends, I was so wrong. I am delighted by this series. There was plenty of things to roll my eyes at and cringe at and yeah there’s stuff that has aged poorly or maybe was bad from the start. But overall, what a joy to watch. It was so fun to see the origin of so many things in science fiction and Star Trek. The costumes and sets were fun to look at. The fighting scenes are sometimes goofy but fun to watch. So much of this show is FUN and you can tell they had a blast making it.

And yeah, I loved Spock. But Kirk, Kirk surprised me. He’s such a deeper and more interesting character than I realized before watching. He’s not really an asshole at all. He’s smart and sweet and a good leader. He loves and ship and his crew. As Spock would say, he’s fascinating.

I knew vaguely about K/S and the history of fanfiction but watching it it’s like…yeah. Of course. Of course these two are together. Of course they launched fandom as we know it. Of course people saw the way they looked at each other and knew they should be married.

If you haven’t watched it yet take this as your sign that you should give it a try. You probably don’t have to watch every episode. There are some real stinkers in there. But give it a try, go in with an open heart, and you might be as delighted by it as I am now.

In the spn mythos I read ‘soulmate’ less as a person who is made for you and less (despite this being my philosophy about the real world) being a person you choose

In the fucked-up spn canon with its lack of easy answers and constant low-key horror implications in all its worldbuilding, I read soulmates as a single soul literally ripped in two

SamandDean are one entity, one shared heaven, one soul

That soul, for whatever reason, was ripped apart and placed into two bodies

And it wasn’t equal and symmetric down the middle like left and right or top and bottom. Souls aren’t quite so geometric

It’s like this:

Sam’s insides were ripped out

He is catnip for possession, for violations of his autonomy, not his fault at all but it keeps happening to him because he is the prom dress (the armor), because he, his soul, is designed to be worn. He struggles from early childhood onward with an interior feeling he can’t describe, of being unclean, of craving normalcy or security or what others have, and he tries to find it, runs to Flagstaff and Stanford, fills himself with power and demon blood and coping mechanisms to maintain control. He works so hard to maintain an internal sense of stability to combat that aching loneliness and emptiness he can’t articulate.

And it all makes sense in the context of his life and what he suffers, but all of it comes back to Dean as his home, as what assuages that sense of gnawing emptiness, what stops him from spiralling out, what sometimes undermines his autonomy – because Dean’s permission for what may fill Sam is absolute, and he will either exorcise or permit it as he pleases because that interior belongs to Dean, to the spot meant to be occupied by his half of their soul.

(Fucked up I know, but SPN is like that, so bear with me)

Dean’s outsides were ripped off

He bleeds out at the edges. He plays peacekeeper because he lacks a boundary between self and other, struggles to maintain any sense of distance. He is the weapon, the sword, Daddy’s blunt little instrument, because he exists in a state of being unsheathed, edges sharp and ready to be picked up and used because there’s no casing on him to stop others from wielding him as such. He looks to his father, to authority figures he respects, to others for guidance because he bleeds out and needs others to shore up his walls. He is overly invested easily and intensely, tells Cassie the secrets of his family after knowing her for weeks, because in the absence of the other half his soul to anchor his outsides and hold his guts in place, he looks to others to control and direct him.

Because all of this also does come back to Sam, who is the stable exterior Dean needs in order to stop himself from flowing out like a bleeding wound that can’t be cauterized. Which means he will follow Sam anywhere, can hardly bear to be without him, will go where he asks, becomes jealous of those around him and desperate when his sights are turned elsewhere.

Sam and Dean are soulmates but it hurts

Because it’s not romantic except in the horror sense. It’s brutal and bloody and it fucks both of them up, makes them vulnerable to others and to each other. And maybe that’s why Chuck did it, why the angels did it, why fate did it. Whatever rules these sorts of things in the mythos. Maybe it was because they needed a sword and a set of armor and they thought this would suffice. Maybe it was because they thought it would make them easier to control and more vulnerable to the right kinds of persuasion, to their archangel counterparts. Maybe it was always destined to be like this and no one chose at all for it to happen.

But because they choose each other, they overcome it. They overcome the agony it causes, the pain of separation, of being wielded by someone else, worn by someone else, of existing in imperfect proximity to one another with only stilted, imperfect language to articulate what they need from each other, how they feel and how deep that need runs, how hungry and ceaselessly the gnawing stomache aches, how raw and violently the shredded edges burn.

They figure it out despite all that. How to sacrifice for each other in ways that play to their advantage, by being wielded and being worn and doing it in service of each other. They use it and figure out how to save each other, even in ways that horrify and corrupt but keep them side by side. How to survive their own existential separation and yet fill the aching hunger inside, stopper the open wounds outside.

That’s the difference between soulmates as what happens to them versus soulmates as what they choose for themselves, time and again. What damns them and what saves them.

(and if any of this is up your alley it is the running thesis in most of my fic, fluff and angst alike, both posted and WIPs I’m still finishing to post, because I literally keep coming back to and circling this notion more and more intently as I figure out how to give voice to it and how absolutely batshit it is and how unhinged it makes them. I am in a constant state of chewing glass.)
