single dad karasu who unintentionally stumbles across your account while he's scrolling through instagram. he has no idea who you are but pauses to watch the video anyway, because you're putting together a kids bento box that looks easy enough for him to try making himself when his daughter goes back to school.

he ends up leaning against the kitchen counter for another forty-five minutes watching videos of you making kids lunches and snacks. and he ends up hitting the follow button on your profile, telling himself it's because he's awful in the kitchen.

(and not because he can't get enough of the way your honeyed voice settles warmly in his chest, the way it tickles against his ribcage, the way it crawls down his spine.)

(not because he somehow finds himself hanging on to every word you say, every simple ingredient, every mundane step.)

(he knows it's gotten bad when he nearly cuts the tip of his finger off because he's too distracted by the soft sound of your laughter as you describe an easier way to dice cucumbers.)

by the time the first day of school rolls around, karasu feels like making lunches won't be so daunting anymore. even if he's watched so many of your videos by this point that his daughter has taken to giggling whenever she hears "daddy's girlfriend" when he's got his phone propped up on the counter in the kitchen.

karasu tabito has never really given much thought about his mole.

it’s just there, really. he forgets that it’s lived on his face his entire life, and only seems to remember it’s presence when he’s fixing his hair for extensive amounts of time in the mirror in the mornings, or even fresh out of the shower while towel drying it.

it’s a minor imperfection, one of many he believes he possesses, but likely the most… unnoticeable one, at the very least. which means he really didn’t think anyone else would notice it that much, either.

that is… until he met you.

you complimented him on it during your first date together, calling it a ‘beauty mark’ and karasu thought it an… odd term. how could something as small and insignificant as a mole have ’beauty’ to it?

sure, he thought you possessed the quality, but in a much broader sense. the idea that you’d think his mole was attractive seemed silly, but if it made you smile like you did back then, he supposed he’d just accept it for what it is.

but karasu also remembers the first time you kissed him there, under his left eye, right where that little blemish lives on his skin. a gentle press of your lips like soft angel wings grazing his face, almost too quick for him to react, yet everything stopped for just a small moment.

he took pause, because it seemed so random yet… purposeful at the same time. there was no warning, no rhyme or reason, no feasible motive. why not just kiss him on the cheek? or better yet, the lips? he likes it when you kiss him there.

until he remembered.

oh... yeah.

“what’d ya do that for, darlin’?”

you blinked and tilted your head a little. “hm? i just felt like kissing you, that’s all.”

it made you smile, having to explain something so simple and obvious to a guy that’s quite honestly a hell of a lot smarter than you. nothing usually ever gets past karasu, and it’s not like it was the first time you had ever kissed him anyway, so why did he question it?

you got a typical kiss of his teeth in response before his demeanor appeared to shift a mere few degrees. “yeah, but… why there?”

his innocent and honest curiosity had butterflies bubbling in your stomach, because behind all the snark and cockiness of him, there seemed to be a hidden layer of vulnerability that you surmise he doesn’t allow a lot of people to see. something within him faltered, a rare occurrence.

still, there sat a cheeky lopsided grin on his face, perhaps to keep the inquiry light for his own sake, so as to not look so sensitive about why you kissed him on that ’beauty mark,’ as you call it, but you caught the subtle glint in his eyes waiting for your answer all the same.

you theatrically tapped finger against your chin, feigning thought if only to let him squirm for a beat because he gets enough frequent satisfaction teasing you. but you didn't let it last long before replying.

“oh… because it said ‘kiss here,’ so… i did.”

you flashed him your sweetest and most sincere smile and watched the tint of his cheeks grow warmer by the second. you had never known karasu to get flustered; always so confident, quick witted, and chock full of playful comebacks, yet he stood there seemingly unable to get a single damn word out for once.

you almost thought you’d hit a sore spot, awakening an unknown insecurity perhaps, because you never bothered to really ask him how he felt about his mole… if only you had known that he didn’t give it much significance at all until the very moment you placed your lips on that tiny little bullseye for your affection to land on.

that same night, karasu tabito stripped you down to kiss every single mole, blemish and freckle he could find on your body. he had decided that he wanted to show you the same pure and genuine appreciation for even the smallest… unnoticeable… and insignificant parts of you.
