Learning that Jason was Red Robin first (during Countdown to Final Crisis) and that Tim actually stole that name and costume has made my entire week. Honest to god Tim Drake is the funniest character of all time. Imagine getting your ass beat for stealing from a guy and then doing it again anyway, top-tier character choice. I think he should take Red Hood next.

not gonna elaborate it rn, but people diminishing Jason's experience with homelessness, malnourishment, childhood abuse and neglect, because he got adopted by a billionaire while also hcning Tim Drake to be abused and starved by his wealthy parents is rooted in racism and classicism

the fact that Bruce made Jason believe in justice and that they could improve the community and better the lives of the citizens by fighting crime, but when he came back nothing had changed, the rogues were still running rampant, and the Joker didn't have a harsher punishment for torturing him, killing his mom and blowing him up, he was still just getting put on time out at Arkham until he decided to escape again
Jason's life was interrupted too soon and he came back to everything being the same shit as always, the only change was that his father had found a substitute for him

suddenly struck with thoughts about the devastating concept of Jason Todd
because he was good. because he had a bleeding heart despite every reason not to. he loved school and was good at it. he was the first to be adopted, with little pretense of guardianship. he did everything he could to be a perfect Robin and live up to an impossible ideal. he only ever wanted Bruce and Dick to like him.
because he met Bruce in the same place and on the same day that Bruce's parents died--the single defining moment of Batman's existence. and he made Batman laugh. he hit the Dark Knight, Terror of Gotham, with a tire iron. he wasn't afraid of the man who turned fear into a weapon.
because he couldn't save his mother from herself, but he tried. because he was too good not to try and save the woman who gave him up. too good to play the Joker's game. the crowbar didn't kill him, the bomb did. he died knowing he wouldn't make it and tried anyway. he died a hero.
because other Robins have died, but none of them put an irrevocable tear in the mythos of Batman. because Jason Todd always dies, in every universe. he dies for the sins of his father. he was put to death by popular vote, sacrificed by the crowd. doomed by the narrative and doomed by the audience. the boy who only ever tried to prove he was good enough--wasn't good enough.
because he has every reason to be angry. because he didn't ask to be murdered, didn't ask to be brought back, and when he did everyone acted like he was better off dead. Bruce tried to kill him and nearly succeeded. he's blamed for his own death and blamed for his resurrection. he can never come home because the house is haunted by his own ghost.
because he's been the hero, the victim, and the villain. because his family and his writers and his universe don't know what to make of him. they don't know how to look his tragedy in the eye. and how can you?
it hurts to look at the hero who cannot be good enough, the victim who will only ever be angry, the villain who can sometimes be right. the audience hates to feel complicit and, in this exceptional case, they are.

[at Jason's funeral]
Dick: *places his hand on the headstone and sobs*
Dick: How could you do this to me? We are so understaffed.

The reason I love the Red Hood being a crime lord instead of a vigilante is that Crime Alley, functionally, doesn't have the same problems as the rest of Gotham. Their main problem isn't the mad Rogues running around, it's the cycle of poverty, violence, and crime that they're all stuck in. And you know what one of the main ways to combat this is? Community. Organizing. Working together.
Except Crime Alley can't just choose to do that. Who would choose to join such a risky proposition instead of a gang that you know can help protect your family? So the Red Hood comes in and he looks like he's just creating another gang, the same as all the others.
Except he's serious about not selling drugs to kids or people in danger of overdosing. Except he protects the working girls fiercely, even if it loses him money. Except all the money he does make goes straight into the community if it's not making sure his employees are alright.
Working within the system is often a necessary measure to fix the system. Except the system in the case of Crime Alley isn't the government that abandoned them, it's the volatile, terrible gang set up. So Red Hood didn't just work within the system, he took it over and made it work for him instead.
Is this perfect? No. The other bats have valid disagreements with Jason's way of doing things. But he is doing so much good.

let's talk about "reconciliation" fics where jason is folded back into the family.
because as far as i see it, it's just jason's autonomy and decision-making skills being thrown away in favor of gaslighting and guilt tripping. when i said jason is the scapegoat, i meant it. and the role of scapegoat is fulfilled by him constantly having a carrot dangled in front of his face saying, "if you were just a little different, more like us, less upset with how we hurt you -- we'd let you come back home." he fulfills the role by being shit on, and told, "hey, it wouldnt have gotten so bad if you could be quiet and listen. ofc we missed you."
jason being brought back into the family with everyone crying and whining about how much he was missed, you dont know what bruce went through, how bad it was, is nothing more than guilt tripping. the expectation that jason is supposed to extend himself to their feelings, acknowledge how upset bruce was, deal with how hurt the family was instead of how hurt jason currently IS -- is telling.
whenever i see fics where it's supposed to be funny or quirky or emotionally hard hitting that people he barely trusts and likes breaks into his apartment, touch his stuff, look through his stuff, eat his food i wonder how much boundaries are understood. how many people would not understand the concept of a low contact family member.
jason comes when he is needed, when there's an emergency. he is undeniably reliable, but not wanting to be buddy buddy with his abuser and the people that cosign his abuse makes him difficult and obtuse??? that he's simply too stupid to understand they mourned him???
what counts as reconciliation for a lot of you, is sweeping every wrong doing done to him under the rug, and making him pay penance for how he reacted. he is the villain, the evil doer, the person who is consistently in the wrong, and that's just not true.
you dont get to degrade everything he was and is, and then call him dumb for not believing he was missed.

Something that Tim Drake “superfans” need to learn how to accept is that the batfam doesnt revolve around Tim and Tim can and has done wrong. Coming from a Tim fan myself, this has been a huge issue in the batfam fandom and it plays a lot into other characters mischaracterization.
Yes, Bruce trained Tim a little harsher than the others, but that was after his son was brutally murdered. Bruce was trying to keep Tim safe.
Yes, Damian attacked Tim, but before that, Tim made fun of Damian and borderline insulted him before they even knew each other.
Yes, Jason did attack Tim in Titans Tower, but Jason had also believed that he had been replaced and discarded the moment he died.
Yes, Dick gave Robin to Damian, but in Dicks eyes, Tim was spiraling and cracking under his grief and couldnt be Robin anymore for his own mental health.
No, Dick didn’t threaten to send Tim to Arkham.
No, Jason didn’t ever call Tim Replacement (it was pretender, which is arguably worse but okay).
No, Damian is not a heartless creature who only wants to remove Tim.
Call Tim a sad coffee obsessed boy or whatever you want, but don’t butcher other characters just to put him on a pedestal.
