Linda Sue Park is an award winning author who writes about the lives of Korean American people. Her children’s chapter book, Prairie Lotus, is about a Korean girl who comes to the US determined to fit in, receive an education, and make friends. The story of immigrant children is a complicated one, but this powerful text may give you a glimpse into the complexities of the Asian American identity. #koreanamerican #prairielotus #immigrants #identity https://www.instagram.com/p/CdoGR7tKjr4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy Earth Day! To celebrate Earth Day, we want to recommend the title, Here We Are, by Oliver Jeffers. Our children love the simple, but entertaining, illustrations that are used to introduce kids to our beautiful Earth. April is a time to welcome Spring and to think about conservation. To start off this month, we want to recommend the title, Wangari Matthai: The Women Who Planted Millions of Trees by Franck Prévot. This beautiful book is about Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan woman who championed reforestation efforts in Africa to bring democracy, peace, and conservation. In this book, we learn that Matthai is not only an activist, but an eldest daughter who cares for her family as much as the Earth. We hope you are as inspired by this Noble Peace Prize recipient as we are! #April #springtime #conservation #reforestation #NobelPeacePrize https://www.instagram.com/p/Cb-hqLaBbtU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Children all over the world have paid the price of war for generations and generations. When will our society learn to protect and safeguard our children instead of putting them at-risk of the repercussions of war? Let us stand with these children and commit to fostering a better world for our future leaders and caretakers of the planet. Little Leaders started with a challenge that author, Vashti Harrison, gave herself to illustrate one African American women a day during Blake History Month. Little Leaders is a collection of mini biographies about inspirational, bold, and extraordinary black women from the past and present. In this book, readers will find both new and recognizable names that will encourage young girls to find strength and be daring in their life adventures. Little Leaders is definitely a book you want to add to your permanent collection. https://www.instagram.com/p/CaAdkdSB4au/?utm_medium=tumblr

February is Black History Month, but we recognize that Black history is American history. If you are to pick up one book to celebrate our American history, the 1619 Project Born on the Water by Nikole Hannah-Jones and Reneé Watson is the one to pick up. This story with its beautifully painted illustrations by Nikkolas Smith, showcases the proud Black American origin story that begins on the water of the Atlantic Ocean. Project 1619 weaves in a tale that starts before the Mayflower and ends with Black American children who are empowered with the understanding that they come from resilient people. Although this title is educational for all, it especially connects young Black children to their roots and reminds them to be proud of the lineages they come from. "And I am not ashamed. I know what my story is, where I am from, where I begin..." -The 1619 Project https://www.instagram.com/p/CZucAiChwpW/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy Lunar New Year! The exact date of Lunar new year changes every year as it follows the lunar calendar rather than the commonly used Gregorian calendar. This year, we want to recommend the title, New Year by Mei Zhan and Qin Leng. New Year showcases the many Chinese traditions that are practiced during Lunar New Year. This story also touches on the feels of longing and loss a Chinese father experiences when their child immigrates to a western, foreign country. The changes of cultural understanding that occurs between parent and child during inter-generational immigration is certainly a hardship during times of family traditions. "You are no longer what you called yourself, a kite floating in the north-facing classroom. Now your window faces south. The dawn's first light and the turquoise sky appear before you as you lean into it's infinity." - New Year https://www.instagram.com/p/CZcYIJSBcPE/?utm_medium=tumblr

Happy Diwali! Today is the Diwali holiday, which is the festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists. This is a major holiday in India and is a time to wish each other great things in so many beautiful ways! Today we want to highlight some amazing accounts, bloggers, and people who are doing the great work of educating us on Diwali today. Go to instagram and check out @virtualdiwali, started by Aartee from @whatarewereading and Mona from @mommatribesunite. They have been celebrating the past 12 days with fun family activities and children’s stories that you and your family may want to try out today! One of our favorite posts from @virtualdiwali is their Day 3 showcase of Brinda Shah from @brindas.bookshelf. She is an aspiring children’s book author who works on bringing South Asian voices to light. Check out her page on instagram for more inspiration on South Asian representation and information on other fun traditional stories! Hope you all find great blessings and prosperity this year! Odoll is a celebration of heroic women from forgotten cultures, starting with African women, the most forgotten of all. We offer information, literature, and games. We bring diversity in children's literature. We bring gender, racial, cultural, and historical representation to children because according to an African proverb, "if one does not know where they are from, they will not know where they are headed." Welcome to Odoll. Join us on our journey! #childrensbooks #women #girls #diversity #africanliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/CV3X3T9PY3e/?utm_medium=tumblr

When we started our journey with our children to discover the world, including African history, which is often overlooked in the US, we could not find anything geared towards children... until we stumbled upon this collection by The Rosen Publishing Group. Although for advanced children and adults, it is a must have for any real teacher of the world. Unfortunately, it is now out of print so most copies we found are retired copies from libraries. We will explore with you this collection one volume at a time. We believe that one cannot be a global citizen until everyone is included in “global.” Here is our contribution ❤️ Hope you like it. . #childrensbooks #blackchildrensbooks #africanchildrensbook #diversitybooks https://www.instagram.com/p/COLM3LhncZv/?igshid=1kr5p081dxvdu

“If people were silent, nothing would change” with these powerful words of Malala, starts the journey into Herstory, by Katherine Halligan and Sarah Walsh. This book is perfect for advanced young readers and adults alike, but it can also be read to an early reader. It is an uplifting recount of the lives of fifty powerful women around the globe and across time. It tells the story of their youth, challenges they faced and their achievements. From ancient Egypt with Hatshepsut to Coco Chanel in French fashion, to Elizabeth Blackwell the first British Born American doctor the stories of these women will surely inspire girls and boys alike. . #childrensbooks #blackchildrensbooks #africanchildrensbook #diversitybooks #sarahwalshillustrator #katherinehalligan #simonandschuster #simonandschusterbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/COB8-bnAU9Q/?igshid=z2htmioih6cl
