I think its sorta touched on in far harbor but I love to think of bodies of water as a more involved food resource in the wasteland, rivers and oceans just being this obsolete filler of irradiated space is a waste. Besides the fact that I doubt that the water would stay as deadly as it is in the later games, I think prewar food has to run out at some point and alternatives would have to be looked into.

I'm trying to incorporate this personally by using the Delaware river as a food source as well as a danger. A lots of scavengers and wasters feed themselves and make a living by learning the fishing patterns, allowing a steady market of mutant striped bass, radcarp, a variety of atomi-catfish, and plenty of tumor trout. It's a great way to sustain a person if not capable of bartering or hunting on land, which realistically could be a lot of wasters. Fishing the river and nearby canals also helps make sure that the population of brookers and mirelurks stays managable. Well maintained boats are prized more than operating cars, simply because you have the river at your disposal.
