TW: mpreg and miscarriage (discussion, not description)
---
Buck is in urgent care for a tweaked knee and the verdict is to rest it for a couple of weeks, and he has to wear a brace around it. As he is hobbling out to the lobby to call for an Uber, he sees Tommy sitting alone in the waiting area.
His heart skips several beats.
It's a feeling that he hasn't felt in some time.
He really should have called or texted Tommy since that night, but with everything that happened, he couldn't make himself reach out, and after Eddie said he made everything about himself, the last thing Buck wanted was to be a burden to someone whom Buck hurt.
But Tommy's here, and Buck can't stop himself from hobbling across the linoleum floor to say hello. In the past, Tommy had an uncanny sense of knowing where Buck was and would look up, catch Buck's eyes, smile that soft, warm smile.
However, Tommy doesn't register Buck until the latter is right in front of him, and then he visibly startles. "Evan?!"
"Hey," Buck says. He motions wordlessly to the empty chair next to Tommy.
Tommy takes a deep, shaky breath, and nods.
Buck sits down and winces at the stiffness of his knee and back. He sometimes wishes he still had the vigor of his twenties - before all the injuries, before his body's been battered by work and life and everything in between. But he's earned nearly all his aches and pains through helping people, so maybe it is a good trade-off.
Then he realizes that Tommy hasn't said hi back.
Turning to his left, Buck studies Tommy's profile and is shocked by the haggard cast of his features. With a sickening sensation in his belly, Buck reaches out to touch Tommy's shoulder. "Hey, Tommy. What happened? You don't look too good."
Tommy tenses, but doesn't flinch away. Instead, he just takes a deep breath and then relaxes his entire frame. "I'll be okay." He turns and gazes at Buck, looking at him from head to knee. "How long does that brace have to be on?"
"Two weeks." Buck swallows past the little hurt at the fact that Tommy is deflecting his question, but he decides that he should push a little. His ex has never looked this tired and gray before. "You know why I'm here, but why are you here?"
Tommy's hands clench where he's draped them over his knees. Then he exhales a humorless chuckle. "I didn't want you to know. Not with everything that's happened since the last time we saw each other..."
"Tommy." Buck scoots closer and lowers his voice. "One of the worst things to happen in my life wasn't made worse only because you answered my call. If you had ignored me - as you would've been right to do - then Chimney would've died. I'd have been shattered beyond repair."
"You were pretty shattered when I saw you in the monitors," Tommy whispers. His fingers twitch, and then, to Buck's horror, he sees tears creeping down Tommy's handsome face. "I'm sorry, Buck. I didn't... I didn't know."
"Baby, it's okay, come here," Buck opens his arms and pulls Tommy into a tight hug. He adjusts his knee positioning as he takes more of Tommy's weight against himself. His eyes get a little damp too. "I should have checked in with you too. I'm sorry."
"No, it's not... not that. It's..." Tommy gulps and takes several long breaths before he straightens. "Not here. I can't tell you here. Can we go to my place? Please?"
Buck links his hands with Tommy's. For the first time, he finds Tommy's hands cold and clammy. "Of course."
+++
Tommy makes tea for them both, and Buck is charmed that Tommy still has sticks of lavender honey in his pantry.
But there's a listlessness in Tommy's movements that worries Buck, so he can't really enjoy the tea.
"Tommy, what did you want to tell me?" Buck finally asks, about fifteen minutes into the silence.
Tommy stops stirring his tea that's probably gone lukewarm now. He keeps his eyes averted.
"You remember when we hooked up?" Tommy says.
Buck flushes. "Yeah. Hard to forget. Especially since I'd put my foot in my mouth the morning after."
"As did I. But, um, it's not... I just, I was stewing in what I said, and I didn't want to apologize first because I was an idiot." Tommy fiddles with his fingers. "And, um, about a week after Bobby's funeral..." He takes a long, deep breath, tongue darting out to lick his lips. His blue eyes flick up to look at Buck, and then he closes them. Very quietly, he says, "I had a miscarriage."
Buck goes completely still.
Tommy doesn't offer anything more.
Buck thinks about delivering Kameron and Connor's baby, that wriggling and wet little creature that was in his hands for such a short while.
And then he thinks about how he and Tommy had been so hungry for each other that they'd foregone protection. The way it had felt when he'd sank into Tommy's willing body and claimed it.
He could've been a dad. He could've been a dad, and he could've named his - their - kid after Bobby. Robin. Gender neutral name. There might've been a Robin Buckley-Kinard howling his existence in a few months.
Robin would've had blue eyes, and a dimpled grin, and a charming cleft chin. Robin would have loved climbing monkey bars and aviation history and fought bullies off in school. Robin would've loved Jee and resented her for being bossy and have been as thick as thieves with Maddie's second baby.
Robin would have loved Athena, and Athena would have spoiled Robin.
Everything flashes across Buck's mind in rapid succession, right before he locks all of that into a box in his head.
Did Tommy know about the pregnancy before he lost it? Buck is certain that, if Tommy had been aware, he wouldn't have kept it from Buck. Not something as momentous as that.
How devastating it must have been for Tommy to discover that he'd been carrying life only when he'd lost it? The fear and desperation he must have been overwhelmed by. Because neither he nor Tommy are over each other. They would've made it work again, or at least tried for the baby's sake. Maybe they would've loved each other more than their respective flaws could keep them apart.
Well, babies aren't required for that last bit.
Heart aching for everything Tommy's had to endure alone, he reaches across the island and clasps Tommy's fingers. "It wasn't your fault."
Tommy's response is a stupefied stare right before his stoic composure breaks, the tears rolling down his cheeks without pause.
Not letting go of Tommy's hand, Buck slips off his stool and walks around the island, finally releasing the cold fingers to pull Tommy into his embrace again. He tucks Tommy's head under his chin and cradles it against himself, presses kisses to soft curls.
"I'm sorry," Tommy chokes out. "I didn't even know, I didn't even know-"
"It wasn't your fault," Buck insists, even as Tommy cries into his shirt, and he lets his eyes grow wet, lets the tears well up and spill over. "It was nobody's fault, it just happened."
As Tommy weeps apologies into Buck's chest and clings to him, Buck holds him close, and he feels something in his ribs loosen.
Then he steps back so he can sit next to Tommy and look into his blotchy, tear-stained face. Carefully cupping his ex-boyfriend's cheek, Buck smiles, tender and repentant. "I wish I'd been there for you."
Tommy sniffs. His lips twitch. "Me too." He touches Buck's cheek and wipes away some of the dampness. "I didn't want to tell you about it. Didn't want to add to your burdens."
"I'm glad you let me carry some of it," Buck replies instantly. "Let me carry as much of it as I can bear." He takes a deep breath, holds it, and blows it out.
A tiny frown appears between Tommy's eyebrows. His eyes are so blue in his pale face. Buck loves him so so much. "I wanna know how you've been. Ever since the... the loss, I'd been mostly on bed rest. Went to the clinic for a final checkup."
"You could've texted."
"I wanted to, but I didn't know what to say. Plus, I was afraid that you'd wanna meet." Tommy tightens his hold on Buck. "I was afraid you'd be angry with me, for losing... for losing our baby. That's nearly the worst part. Lying there, thinking about how you'd respond if you knew."
Buck ducks his head and sighs. "You don't have a shift today, do you?"
Tommy winces. "I deserve that. But no, I don't."
"I'm gonna order us some food, and then we can talk, and maybe we can tell each other how we're really doing. I'm sorry I didn't text you either. I should have." Buck leans forward and kisses Tommy chastely. His heart skips again. "Let me help support you through this, please."
"You're wearing a knee brace." But Tommy's tease is halfhearted.
"You know what I mean." Buck smiles again, and presses his hand over Tommy's hand.
Tommy turns his palm over. "I may be clingy for a while."
"Good." Buck keeps his hand where it is. "Me too."

The funny thing about the queerbating argument for this fandom is that even if Buck or Eddie were women, they wouldn't be good together. Like at all.
If Buck were born Evelyn Buckley, and met Eddie the same way, when would a good time be? In season 2? No, Eddie was with Shannon. So either Buck would be portrayed as a home wrecker or Eddie would actively be trying to cheat on his wife. Season 3 wouldn't be any better but the whole grocery store scene would make Eddie extremely abusive. Anything after that point you'd have to address that scene and the fact that Eddie basically had his female best friend become Chris's mom. Which would basically downgrade Buck's place in the story. This show has a hard time balancing their female characters place between work and motherhood to begin with. Add to the fact that Buck's storylines tend to be romantic base and their relationship would crumble within a season or two.
If they made Eddie a single mom we wouldn't have the abuse issue. As this show ignores any abuse that happens to their male characters. However, with Buck coming off of Abby from season one he wouldn't want to persue that relationship in season 2, plus again Eddie was married. Then in season 3 he feels bad because he lost Eddie's kid then up and disappeared. Come season 4 fem!Eddie over there clearly isn't interested in making him Chris's dad. So Buck wouldn't try to start anything and Fem!Eddie would probably be given a whole lot of single mom storylines. Trying to push a relationship between them would feel wrong.
So no, if either of them were a women it wouldn't work. Funnily enough though, turn Buck or Tommy into a woman and their story still works.
Fem!Buck overly flustered by Eddie's new friend? Tries to get his attention by showing off? Also maiming your friend to get a guys attention is totally something a girl would do.
Fem!Tommy trying to fit in a macho line of work turning into more of an asshole to blend in? It's already canon. Fem!Tommy getting to fly a helicopter and save everyone? We saw it with Lucy, why not? Female Tommy leaving Buck at the restaurant because he's kinda being a jerk but taking him back cause he's sweet and apologizes? Amazing. Seeing how much Buck has grown in the past and trying again with an older woman would also be pretty cool.
Point is: The BuckTommy storyline isn't the show queerbating the audience. It would work with or without the queer elements. Buddie just doesn't work period.

Every few days, a miscellaneous fandom reinvents racial stereotypes and heteronormativity but it's always for their fave gay ship.

What do you think separated the old buddie shippers who still ship buddie but accepted bucktommy/or only ship bucktommy now from the buddie shippers who went to the extreme of hating everyone who doesn't consider Tommy to be evil incarnate?
media literacy. I'm not being snarky, that's my genuine answer.
buddie shippers who accepted bucktommy already understood the show's overall narrative before bucktommy was even introduced. they understood that their ship (buddie) was fun but fanon, and they accepted it, so they were already open to seeing queer storylines explored in canon because they didn't think they'd get that much at all (speaking from personal experience, as well as the experience of many of my multishipper mutuals).
meanwhile the Buddie Or Bust crowd, they viewed the entire show through the lens of fanfic. they couldn't - and still cannot - understand how or why buddie was not already canon, because they haven't actually paid attention to the show. they think they're the target audience - the only audience - and can't understand why they're not still being pandered to. they can't accept that a bisexual storyline for Buck is still a win, because it didn't happen in tandem with buddie canon or gay!Eddie. they can't accept that Eddie is straight, despite the character saying it on screen. they can't accept that Buck has no romantic or sexual feelings for Eddie, or vice versa. because again: they lack media literacy. they think the show should be influenced - or straight up written - by the fandom, and cannot comprehend at all why the show isn't doing that.
it all just comes down to media literacy. some of us saw the writing on the wall. others were too busy trying to get the fridge magnets to speak in code.
