“what are you doing here? the party’s over there.”

johnny walks up to you with a smile and a raised eyebrow, finding you in your usual hiding spot at a party : in the corner, by the refreshments, an untouched cup of a drink you’re not really too sure about in your hands. he raises his cup towards you before taking a sip, gesturing for you to do the same.

you shake your head and place your cup on the table, crossing your arms in front of your chest instead. the corners of your lips downturn into a frown, a quiet huff escaping them, “i’m really not in the mood for this, johnny.”

he moves to stand beside you, nudging your shoulder with his own. an exaggerated pout appears on his lips, employing a teasing tone of voice to his words, “yn! it’s new year’s eve! why are you not on the dance floor, we have five minutes until midnight!”

johnny’s hand makes its way towards you, attempting to pull you out of your little corner and towards where everyone was - and where everyone has formed a dance circle around ten and taeyong. but you shake his hand off, feet rooted the ground beneath your feet.

“don’t. my ex-boyfriend just-”

his eyes grow wide, clearly in shock, “the asshole?”

“everyone i’ve ever dated is an asshole to you,” you chuckle, shaking your head at him. you lean back towards the wall with a sigh, “anyways, he just walked in with his new significant other and i really don’t want to be there when midnight strikes.”

his heart sinks, serves him right to be pining over his best friend. johnny coughs, looking down at his feet, “oh. i thought you already moved on, i din’t realise you were still hurting over him…”

“what?” you practically shriek; lucky for you, the music was loud enough that you don’t catch anyone’s attention. you hit his arm, “of course, i’m over him! it’s just…”

“it’s just what?” concern laces his voice, rubbing his hand over the spot you had hit.

your eyes scan over the sea of people that populated jaehyun’s living room, landing on your ex and his new partner, clearly packing on the pda for everyone to see. johnny’s gaze follows yours, taking in the couple with disdain before his eyes land on you, his expression softening into nothing but fondness.

“i’m alone, johnny. he has someone to kiss at new year’s. it’s been months, and he has someone with him.” you tear your gaze away from your ex-boyfriend, looking at johnny -  who had already been looking at you - instead. “i’m all alone.”

“no, you’re not.” he smiles, determination evident in his expression and in his words, “you’re with me.”

“what- what are you talking about?”

you yelp when johnny’s hand grabs yours, leading you away from your corner to the middle of the living room, where everyone gathered to count down the seconds ’til midnight. his hand tightly clasps yours, but you make no attempt to shake it off, allowing yourself to engulfed in the warmth and comfort of being close to him.

johnny isn’t doing any better, his cheeks a bright red by the time his feet stop walking, pulling you close beside him.

“five!” the crowd chants, all eyes trained on the clock on the wall.

he turns to face you, placing a hand on your cheek, “this okay?”

“four!”

you nod, your breath getting caught in the back of your throat. every single word has escaped you completely.

“three!”

his heart threatens to beat out of his chest, ringing in his ears louder than any voice that surrounded him. everyone else doesn’t matter. it’s only you and him.

“two!”

to your surprise, you lean in first. truth be told, over the course of your friendship, you’ve always wondered how his lips would feel on yours. now, you were about to get your answer.

“one!”

he smiles, letting his lips brush along yours, “you’re my best friend…and i’m so in love with you.”

the room erupts in cheers, the loudest, brightest fireworks light up the sky, but all that melts away when johnny finally captures your lips in a kiss.

last night, johnny had a dream where he kissed you, his roommate, and he genuinely forgot how to function.

it felt so real, almost unbelievably so. there you were : standing just a couple of feet away from him, with that small smile on your face that always made him unexplainably giggly, and you were moving closer. and closer. just until your face was inches from his, and your hand was on his cheek. a gust of wind blows past between the two of you and he feels the warm rays of the sun on his bare arms. your lips barely brushed against his, your eyes fluttered shut, and all he could do is hold his breath and hear the beating of his heart ringing in his ears. time stopped when he finally feels your lips on his.

but of course, his alarm had to remind him that he had a meeting waiting for him at eight in the morning.

now here he is, absentmindedly pouring milk into a bowl of cereal, desperately trying to recall every single moment of that dream. the only thing that snaps him out of his train of thought is your fingers repeatedly snapping in front of his face.
