As far as religious institutions go, i do have a lot of fondness for the abstract idea of monasticism/renunciation as a thing someone (voluntarily!) chooses as an alternative lifestyle that involves forgoing a traditional family structure.
It typically seems that rhen a weird group of religious people goes off away from society to form a permanent community it typically ends in tragedy except when they don't plan to maintain the group by starting families and reproducing, and instead solely rely on recruitment from outside the community.
I think the differences in incentives here are fairly clear-cut; if someone is born into an isolated community it's critical to the survival of the community that they and most of their peers be coerced into staying, and since the community is all they know, they have no concept of what the outside world is truly like, so it's straightforwardly beneficial to the survival of the group to keep them isolated and ignorant rather than to provide a way of life that's necessarily better than the external world. However, if recruitment into the community is only possible via people who already know what the outside world is like choosing to join willingly, there's no such perverse incentive, which greatly increases the quality of life that must be maintained within the community in order to keep it alive, because otherwise it won't be able to attract new members.
Of course, there's still plenty of opportunity for abuse and coercion in either situation, people do still willingly join cults and then find that they can't leave when things get bad without losing their entire social circle and support network! But as with anything involving power dynamics, it's always worse when there's children involved.

oh the joy of making something with your hands. folding your love into the dough. letting it rise in warmth and comfort that you provide. taking it from the oven and smiling because, yes, you made this. made with love, baked in hope. what is more joyful than this.

I’ve realised what bothers me about the “cis kids won’t be harmed by learning about appropriate words to describe one’s experiences with gender but trans kids will be harmed by not learning them” discourse I’m seeing out there.
It’s correct, absolutely, but it’s also casting the entire thing in the wrong way.
It’s not just “won’t be harmed by”; cis kids literally *benefit* from learning about the appropriate words to express and describe their experiences with gender. In the same way trans kids do, even if the benefit might not be so big or so obvious.
Look how many of the sanctioned cis ways to affirm one’s gender and describe gender euphoria are all tied up with patriarchy, misogyny and body-shaming.
I want to live in a world where kids of any gender can understand about gender euphoria and dysphoria and make good choices about healthy ways to feel them and deal with them that don’t involve catastrophic dieting, dangerous amounts of working out, or following Andrew Tate or other fascist misogynists.
I’m nonbinary. I thought I was a woman for decades though, and a lot of the ways I was encouraged to be feminine were really shitty, and would have been pretty unhealthy even if they hadn’t been mixed up with dysphoria and queerphobia from others.
We want a world where we dismantle gendered power structures, right? And just leave gender as a way of self-expression; of being one’s self? I don’t think we can do that without cis kids learning this as well as trans kids, and I think all the steps of learning this will benefit everyone as well as the end result.
The thing is that there is no way of turning a cis kid trans. Gender exploration won’t harm *anyone*. If a kid is cis, they will affirm their gender to themselves. If a kid is trans, they will learn stuff about themselves that could literally save their life.
The only people who want the system the way it still mainly is are people who want to keep gendered power structures in place.

What I've learned is that it's easy to be filled with hatred for other people for even the mildest of reasons. It's harder to overcome that in feeling positively about others, even if it's small.
So if you feel guilty because it's really hard to love humanity rather than hate it, just know that it is hard. It's worth it, though, because it is more fulfilling in the short and long-term to not hate the whole of humanity. It is normal to find it hard to feel positively - it's just worth it to do everything to find the good regardless
