MAY 2024 life update!!! hello again, tumblr
'this is a life,'
as mitski sang. truly, life has a way of coming to resemble a bagel. one minute you're in your senior year of high school figuring out what university to apply to, and in the next, over 4 years have passed, and all you have to show for it is a sense of futility coming to rest over everything like a big heavy suffocating blanket, rendering most of existence, at its core, (seemingly) void of meaning. (if ur wondering what a bagel has to do w it watch everything everywhere all at once)
but at the same time, life proves time and time again to be at its heart, full of meaning and love even if it's just a tiny black speck of it in a silly googley eye. (again, the movie)
this is a blog!
and i'm trying to make sense of this life as a twenty-something year old nearly done with her degree. the degree that was meant to be done in 3 years, but has since stretched to four, the degree that i had dreamt of attaining abroad before a pandemic grounded me to this island. a degree that i am, again, nearly done with. done as in i'm close to graduating, but mostly done as in im so over it !!
i am a student of what you'd call 'communication arts,' but truly our times have also made me a student and witness of genocide(s), poverty and corruption, police brutality and extrajudicial killings, oppression and exploitation; but also of apathy, greed, and complacency in the face of it all. you'd think it's just too much for a sensitive little 'gen z' to handle. and it almost is. and yet!
i embark on this journey still. of self discovery, yes, but also of observation. a search of this sense awe and wonder in everyday life. to embrace that little googly eye you need a recognition and awareness of the persisting beauty and humanity in our world.
this is not weakness, this is not naive optimism or an invite to look away or hide in ignorance, but it is a commitment to stand and see that even now there are little glimpses of creation. brief glints of what we could be and what the world has to offer. it is finding promise and hope in the sunsets that mark each day, in the tropical storms that boast of their power, in the gentle song of the maya bird... it is in the warm smile and reassuring touch, in the young generation that refuses to be bystanders of injustice.
this is a life. and we have to choose to live it still. i'm still figuring it out. some days i identify more with the bagel (can i have some cream cheese w that), but we have to hold on to our little joys. there is a strength that comes in embracing the googly eye lol. (also, read some mary oliver ur life will change)
ok .. so... feel free to join me as i try to once again make my cute little blog posts on this cute little blog !! hah ha

It strikes me again how much EEAAO is centered around its Asian American-ness and Joy's queerness in ways that also don't make the movie just about that. They are so, so integral to the core of the movie that you cannot have this movie with those factors but they are also not the only factors and they are so clearly NOT tokenistic in ways that movies such as Shang-Chi were. The movie wasn't about queerness and Asian American-ness but built itself on those foundations and salkdfjdslkjfsdlkjfdslkjf it's so good

Round One
The Wang family (Everything Everywhere All at Once) VS The Entire Pantheon of Greek Gods (Greek Mythology)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Wang family
Members: Evelyn, Joy, Waymond, Gong Gong (grandfather)
Propaganda:
"Everything Everywhere All at Once follows the wild journey of an ageing Evelyn Wang, who learns that she is the only one who can save the multiverse. That's the last thing she needs, considering she's already struggling to maintain her hectic laundromat, failing marriage, and messy relationship with her daughter, Joy. It's an unbelievable and often hilarious trip as Evelyn discovers her alternate selves, soon learning that the big baddie she has to stop is a version of her own daughter. At its core, EEAAO is a stirring and touching film about a dysfunctional family trying to find their place in the vast universe (and alongside each other)."
Greek Pantheon
Members: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Hestia, Demeter, Hades, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Hermes, Ares, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Dionysus, literally hundreds more.
Propaganda:
"There's a reason why "Saturn devouring his son" is one of the most famous paintings out there" "Zeus and Poseidon having ALL the affairs, People trying to overthrow Zeus, Zeus and Poseidon almost starting a war, Poseidon and Athena rivalry over a competition that happened hundreds of years ago, Aphrodite cheating on Hephaestus with Ares, Hermes killing Apollo's cows, The whole Demeter and Hades thing, The Trojan war, Genuinely any story from Greek mythology"

do you have a meta for eeaao
it's a good movie 👍 honestly there's not much I can say on it that hasn't already been said by people who are far more eloquent and analytical than i am. it's ridiculously multilayered, incredibly fun, and has one of the strongest and most sincere emotional cores of any film I've ever seen. i'm not a film guy by any means, but it's a work that I can tell was made with an incredible amount of passion and willingness to play with its medium. there's a reason it has reams and reams of essays written about it - it fucking deserves it. go watch it if you haven't already

I hate white women so much y'all 😭😭😭
Tumblr media
Do NOT come into my house and compare the absolute artistic masterpiece that is Everything Everywhere All At Once to the corporate pinkwashed capitalist feminism that inhabits the Barbie movie
In what goddamn world are these movies comparable? Like seriously?
Stop white people from reviewing movies for the rest of time fr
Like yeah, enjoying life despite the difficulties is the core of EEAAO but to compare a movie about a middle aged immigrant mother dealing with the trials and tirbulations of leaving her home behind and building a new one while also having to navigate the nuances of the strained relationship she has with her second generation queer daughter all with the overwhelming conceit of the scifi multiverse to a movie about a blonde white lady and her blond boyfriend going on a campy adventure sure is.... an opinion.
And this isn't even to mention the production of EEAAO versus the production of Barbie. Like the absolute artistic mastery that went into the development of EEAAO that only had a tiny itty bitty team compared to the overbearingly cheap commercial cinematography of the giant overbloated billion dollar blockbuster budget of the Barbie movie. I can't, I'm sorry
I just cannot believe someone would leave the theater after watching White Feminism 101 and think, "You know what this movie reminds me of? The groundbreaking film about a family of immigrants that literally rewrote the landscape of the film industry for a whole year after its release"
Like bruh 😭😭😭

Probably the most important film this decade.
As it's probably first big successful post-post modern film.
As it's not only deconstruct it genre and itself, But ALSO put together the pieces it got from all of it and present a nice answer to its theme.
Why it's post-post modern and not just post modern?
If we take an End of Evangelion. It ends with more questions than answers, its core theme is about people and their interaction, what it means being alive (and alone) and what it means to you that in all that tang only two people got out.
In that case EEaaO would end on second chapter.

I like Everything Everywhere All At Once, but the way the movie tries to approach its more uplifting themes and the way its fans discuss them is a pretty good example of a major flaw in how a lot of people irl do uplifting messaging
A lot of attempts to make messages intended to give people hope just kinda quietly ignore or fail to properly examine the material conditions that lead to those people being so miserable in the first place, and EEAAO isn't much different
Jobu Tupaki is always suffering all the time, experiencing infinite deaths and infinite fates worse than death, and she's effectively stuck in a state of existence where she has no free will as she has and will continue to experience every possible choice she will ever make at the same time
The movie responds to her outlook on life, but really doesn't consider the broader implications of what it'd actually be like to be a being like Jobu Tupaki, and if they did try, the movie's core message would likely fally apart in the face of its own premise

One thing about the 90s - 00s: they were gonna make a mother+daughter coming of age movie at least twice a year.
The “I hate my overbearing or eccentric & irresponsible mother” genre is slowing making a comeback and I couldn’t be happier

swiss army man and eeaao have the same core narrative + resolution
(or, my disdain for auteur theory and my pattern seeking brain punching each other at the same time)
swiss army man and eeaao share the same core narrative, and thats the rescuing of two lonely/melancholic/frustrated people through a mutual recognition of their struggles with existence and how that empathy can allow for a sense of peace and optimism with which to face daily challenges.
for swiss army man, its hank seeing himself in manny, and learning how that cruelty and shame he enacts on him is the one he enacts on himself, how that wonder for the everyday life that manny has is exactly what he needs to keep himself afloat, how the connection with someone else, the lack of judgement and the patience allows him to be kinder to himself, how he needed a gentler more open version of himself without all the baggage he has been collecting in order to find calm in the storm of his own despair and ennui.
and in eeaao its evelyn seeing herself in her daughter, and realizing that her frustrations, her failed potential and all those better lives she has not lived werent going to materialize in success for joy, her greatest hope, but only be replicated: and that the weight of it all not only keeps her in a constant state of frustration with the present but also culminates in a broken relationship with her daughter, the person who needs her the most, to the point that they both actually flirt with self destruction as a sort of last resort attempt at connection before evelyn finally understands that in order to save herself and her daughter she needs to extend the sympathy she didnt get to her own daughter before she loses her for good, allowing them both to exist in the present and be thankful for the reality they belong to and the connections and little joys they have.
anyway real connection and understanding of mutual struggle is essential for survival, and in an increasingly individualistic world that is an unusual thing to declare as a basic truth.
