This is a VERY long answer because I'm not sure how well do you know about the entire immune system 'cause they involve more than just cells- so I'm very sorry

HIV targets cell's that have CD4+ receptors,cells that have these are helper t cells (hence why are they called CD4+ T cells),macrophages,dendritic cells and monocytes

Though neutrophils,NK cells and other cells are unaffected,the decrease in helper t cells,macrophages,DC cells and monocytes leads to them in dysfunction.Additonally HIV attacks the bone marrow where red and white blood cells are produced

B cells are also affected though indirectly,because HIV primarily attacks Helper T cells which help B cells fully activate,B cells cannot produce effective antibodies against the virus.

1.DC or Macrophage (MΦ) are antigen presenters.They get infected by HIV

2.Both cannot initiate antigen presentation due to being infected

3.Helper T cells (Th cells) need a DC (usually) or MΦ to fully activate,but they can't because both the DC cells and MΦ's are infected.

4.B cells need a full activation by Helper T cells,but due to inactivity from the Th cells they cannot produce effective antibodies.

5.Since Th cells help rile up the entire immune system,inactivity from them won't be good which leads to immunodeficiency (a really bad immune system) WHICH THEN IN TURN leaves the person susceptible to infection a condition called AIDS.

Fun fact: Like old age,you can't die from HIV alone; the diseases brought by HIV/AIDS are why.

In a viral infection, I know dendritic cells can be infected by viruses, but why don’t your other immune cells get infected too? Do they just not have the right receptors for any viruses at all?? Because the only thing I know of is HIV which targets your T Cells, but what abt your macrophages, neutrophils, etc?
