Going camping for the very first time today! I know, I know it’s embarrassing!!! BUT I grew up in Florida and camping was not an option there y’all. There was risks including but not limited to mosqeeeters, armpit of satan humidity, possible attack by incest-driven-bath-salt-user in the dead of night, and ya know the gators that most likely would have used me as jerky. LETS TALK POSING: . . 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👩💏👨‍❤️‍👨To my couples: 👥Take a deep breath: 99% of the time my couples let me know they’re awkward, unsure of what to do, nervous etc. That is totally okay! I don’t expect you to know how to model! 🥂Meet me half way! Treat this like a date night: Remind yourselves of what you want photos together. Get excited to spend time with each other, & approach the session as more of a milestone instead of a photoshoot! If you come with a positive attitude it will change the vibe right off the bat! 📸 To my fellow photographers: 🚫Don’t expect your couples to know what to do: I had a couple recently tell me the photographer told them to just act natural and be cute. That would stress anybody out haha. ✨Build a relationship! : Set them up for an experience that creates those natural moments. I like to have time before where I interact with them as a person before I even shoot so I’m not a scary person with a camera! 🎶 Play some jams! : Nobody wants to make out in silence it’s creepy Haha plus this can set a great mood! 🗣The way you speak is important : For high energy photos get pumped and excited! For more intimate stuff lower your voice! The intimate stuff is something I’ve noticed people struggle with! If you love what your couple is doing and you start yelling “YASSS QUEEN” they’re probably going to break “character” and start laughing haha. If you quietly ask them to move a certain way, they’re more likely to maintain that serious mood. 💃 Posing : I like a combo of directing/being a momma bear. Directing creates more action based movement instead of “perfect poses” and you’re letting them trust you and this takes the stress of their shoulders! Once you’ve created a space they feel safe in most couples will start to take the lead! And then as for being a momma bear, (always ask for permission), I’ll go in and adjust details like hands and hair etc. I’ve noticed that by doing these little things it lets them know you truly want them to look their best and it helps them relax! BALANCE IS KEY: This has been an incredible season. The highlight reel was the 35+ incredible weddings I got to be a part of. The traveling that took me from my home of Washington/Oregon, to California Colorado, Missouri, Florida, Idaho, Texas all the way overseas to France, Italy, and Japan. Like holy crap how is it only August haha But all that to say that I’ve been juggling a lot. Between my incredible couples, releasing Bae&Bae, releasing Sublime, taking on teaching opportunities, and going back to school on top of it all- wowza it has been a long season. I have had to get my workflow down to the freaking T to make it all work haha (shout-out to @spacewolfgrace for having the best workflow guide out there) I’ve taken away two crucial pieces of self advice that I wanna share with you guys. The first- the determination is so real. I think I’ve grown to low key hate when people say they don’t have time to do something. You can always make time if you prioritize. The second to back that up- the burnout is so real unless you also factor in time to breathe (shout-out to @maggiegracephotography for always reminding me of this). That should be a priority just as much as the grind. I also have grown to low key hate when people say they work like 90 hour weeks! You need to find a balance and hold onto that. In between weddings I have found myself at lakes and beaches, exploring new hole in the wall places, just laying in bed and being like today is a fucking Netflix today and no one will shame me for it 😂 But seriously guys- if you’re working your ass off and never taking a minute for yourself, tell me what you’re actually working for? And same vice versa, if you’re always complaining that you’re not achieving the goals you want to, take a hard look in the mirror and ask yourself if you’ve truly devoted your time properly. The three of us literally became storm chasers yesterday. We drove out to the gorge and then started getting pelted with rain after like ten minutes of shooting so Alex drove us back shirtless while Katie and I screamed every time we saw lightening bahaha it was such a great day. Growing up I always figured I would have a pretty traditional Pakistani wedding- but now after photographing so many weddings I think my heart is caught on having something that is a fusion of what I love from my Pakistani culture and what I love of western culture. As much as all the options high key stress me out (I’m that person that gets stressed out at chipotle and subway because you have to tell them what you want)- it’s also pretty amazing seeing the wedding industry change so much to be so inclusive of all kinds of weddings!! I love the big ones, they’re a party with your favorite people and everyone is celebrating you!! I love the intimate ones, they’re so emotional and close knit and every person there is so important, and I love elopements because it’s just you and the love of your life in a place that makes your heart happy. SO MANY OPTIONS YALL. I had a couple reach out to me last night about wanting me to be with them for the next milestone in their life. They didn’t say it was because of my photos or because of anything related to photography at all. They said they wanted me there because they wanted someone in the room that they knew they loved and trusted. I think that says so much about this industry and what we do. I always get asked, “But what will you do when iPhones become so amazing they take better photos than cameras.” And every time I reply, “Exactly what I’m doing right now.” Because at the end of the day anyone can take an amazing photo, it’s not rocket science. But to be trusted and to be loved, those things take a lot more than just technicality and I’m so grateful to the people who have loved and trusted me enough to let me be a part of their lives and their moments. I was on the phone with a couple yesterday and they were inquiring about their elopement for next year and one of the questions that she asked me was “how do you make people look so comfortable and so at ease?” And I kind of laughed because I don’t know that there are many normal people that are totally comfortable being in front of the camera- I know I’m definitely not one of them. It’s incredibly easy to feel like you’re under a spotlight when you have a camera on you and all of a sudden you become aware of all your flaws and your thoughts get away from you and turn into a frenzy of insecurities. When she asked me this I told her that this is normal- there isn’t anything wrong with being scared of being in that spotlight, it’s not something we’re all used to. But what I also told her is that I don’t treat your wedding day like a photo shoot, I don’t treat any moment that I spend with you guys like a photo shoot. This is an incredible moment in your life and I want you to melt into every second of it and let yourself feel it. But meet me half way. I tell all my couples I’ll help you, but you already know what you’re doing. For instance, When you hug each other don’t freeze up, you wouldn’t do that in real life- trace each other’s arms, pull each other in, don’t stop because it’s a moment in motion not a posed photo. Meet me halfway and just love on one another and lose yourself in each other and I’ll take care of the rest. And later when you see these photos you won’t think about the little flaws or the imperfections- you’ll remember how their warm fingertips grazed against your jaw line right as the water hit the coast and the wind sent sand spiraling beneath you and the way your laughter wrapped itself around you two as if that was all that mattered in that moment. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2LGFpQM
