Endure

In the sky where snow should be falling there are ashes. It’s not beautiful and refreshing, but a heavy weight descending onto my shoulders. As I stand there in the cold, my lungs fill with the tainted air.

What is this? Where is the joyful snow? What is this gray dust replacing it? It doesn’t twinkle under the lights. It absorbs it. Now everything looks gray and lifeless. The liveliness I had expected has been poisoned.

With a heavy heart, I head back inside.

The next morning I wake up and immediately open my curtains hoping to finally see the white blanket that I’ve been anticipating.

But when my eyes pass through the pane, I see nothing but the colorless cinders across the streets and on the trees. The poor trees...they must carry the burden of ashes as it piles onto every branch, blocking their natural color. A casualty to this forsaken time.

I wake up the next morning, but this time, I don’t feel like looking at the saddening scene awaiting me outside of my window. It’s happening. I can do nothing to stop it. The only choice I have is to face the reality of it. There will not be joy filling the air this time. I should just forget about the glimmering lights sprinkled around the city and the smiles and laughter of people around me. So I sulk alone under my covers for the day.

The next day drags into view and I’m awakened by a light shining in my face. As I open my eyes, I notice a ray of light coming thru the curtains. When I pull them back a new sight reveals itself to me.

Snowflakes still cease to fall, but instead, is slowly turning to tiny puddles. Along with the snow, the ashes begin to fade as well revealing vivid green grass and the trees. They have survived this hard time. As I look closer, I notice a tiny blossom at the end of the branch closest to my window. Amazing to see such beauty come to fruition after such adversity.

It’s beauty is more powerful than normal. More extravagant. More warming. More hopeful.

Such strong beauty is sure to endure even through the hardest of times, as it has done once before.
