EP 5.4 So You Haven't Changed After All
Devil May Cry x Reader Insert
Warnings: It's DMC. Based on the New Netflix Series and DMC3. Spoiler warnings for the actual show and game. Not proofread. Canon divergent.
EP. 5.3 Repaying A Debt (prev.)
EP. 6.1 TBA
Synopsis: You confront the Rabbit, and figure out crucial parts of his plan.
Tumblr media
“What the hell happened here?”
Dante snaps his head at the source of the voice, having just caught you in your fall. As the shadows receded from the sunlight, a familiar lady approached them with a gun in hand.
“I know you.” Dante mutters and holds you closer while holding Rebellion with his other hand, stance ready for another fight. “Lady.”
But Mary only narrowed her eyes and scoffed upon seeing his trembling grip. Even she could take him down in his current state. Ignoring Dante's tense figure, Mary walked closer, gun now pointed at him. “Answer my question.”
Seeing that Dante won’t budge, Mary sighed and dropped her hand to the side, eliciting a confused expression on his face. They’ll get nowhere at this rate, and besides, he’s not a threat to her right now. Though his eyes never left her until she walked past, still guarded in anticipation for a surprise attack.
“Relax, that shot was only to knock them out.” Mary glanced behind her and watched as Dante gently laid you down to the side to examine your injuries, before looking away and fishing her tracker from her pocket. “Besides, I’m here for you amulet.”
Dante frowned as he saw your face littered with cuts. His hand hovered just above, hesitating from the memory of his earlier transformation, before eventually rubbing off the soot that clings on your skin. He doesn’t exactly trust his own strength at the moment. Who knows if he’ll suddenly lose control of himself again, and… hurt you?
Dante took his coat off and put it over you as a makeshift blanket, before pulling away to look up at Mary. “So, this is where my necklace is, huh?” His question made her stop walking, turning around to face him with a look of apprehension. She isn’t really hiding that she’s reaching for the gun, and grabbed it when Dante stood up. “Why are you here if you didn’t know?”
He only shrugs and cocked his head to the direction of the massive hole he and Rudra caused.
Having followed what he gestured to with her eyes, Mary sighed and rolled her eyes, before continuing her search. She almost missed his antics, given everything she had been through in the past few hours. But, then again, she has to take the both of you to custody; with him being part-Makaian and you… having been possessed by… otherworldly swords?
Mary shook her head at the thought, she ought to really think of another way to describe the Makaians without discriminatory undertones.
“It should be right here…” Lieutenant Arkham trails off. Not because she saw the amulet, no. Her tracker was removed from the accessory, having been put in the teacup in front of her. The reason she stopped is because of the plush toys laid around the cup reminiscent of a tea party.
Each of the four toys were heavily brutalized in a manner too familiar to her. A bunny has a toy knife lodged on their stomach. Another has their arm torn off. The one on her left has needles stuck everywhere on their body. And the last one laid on its stomach, with its back ripped open.
Just like how her team had died.
Livid, Mary shot the teacup. She can already imagine the Rabbit having drunk from it, surrounded by the corpses of her friends. “Sick motherfucker.” She grits her teeth, getting lightheaded from the stress.
Across the room, Dante eyes her before someone groans awake.
“Hey, hey. Slow down.” Immediately, he was by your side as you tried to sit up. You have to admit, if you’re still alive despite the excruciating pain in your body, you doubt you’ll die from anything at all. God, what was that? One time you’re falling from the sky, and then the next second, you’re having hallucinations of your childhood trauma. You placed your hand on your face, wishing for the memory of attacking Dante to be just another illusion your mind made.
But the moment you turn your head to the side, as your vision adjusts to the light, there is Dante, looking worried for you despite his own injuries. You spot the singed and broken pieces of wood, as well as the chaotic state of the room, but none of the swords you wielded. So that was real after all. Bowing your head in shame, you stared at the red coat on your lap. You can vaguely make out what Dante’s saying beside you before you cut him off with a soft apology.
What you didn’t expect is for that fucker to start laughing at your sincerity.
Appalled and embarrassed, you jumped at the wheezing Dante, pushing him to the floor. Though, even with the both of you being heavily injured, he easily caught your wrist, flashing that familiar grin. "Oh, this is you, alright. There ain't no one else out there who fights me like we're trying to salvage a marriage."
"Welcome back." Dante laughs.
Oh, you're going to kill him one day. You bowed your head, lowering it to his chest to hide the fact that tears are welling up on your eyes. "Yeah... I'm back."
Your reunion was interrupted with a sudden beep of a communicator. Blinking back your tears, you and Dante sat up while Mary walked over to where Rudra's corpse was, plucking the device from the ground. Upon touching it, the device suddenly activated and produced a holographic video call.
It's the Rabbit.
"Lieutenant Arkham! Dante!" He cheerfully greets the two, before turning his head at you, grinning wolfishly.
"And... (Y/N)."
He seems pleased for some reason.
"I presume this means Rudra is...?"
"Currently having a trip back to Hell." Mary cuts him off, visibly disgusted at the sight of the Rabbit. Not that he minded.
"Hmm." The Rabbit nods and closes his eyes in a mocking display of grief. "Then, he will be remembered as a martyr."
What? But Rudra's not dead? You glanced at your hands, remembering the agreement you now share with the demons. No. Not again...
"It's you I was going for anyway." Like a switch that's been flicked, The Rabbit perks up again.
-
Meanwhile, floors below the three of you, DARKCOM officers are having a hard time getting up the building. Not only is every level on fire, they can't progress with their mission. Nevermind the refugees, they won't be able to rescue even their Lieutenant at this point.
One of the leading officers received a call from his communicator, it's the Vice President asking for a status report. "What's going on out there? Is the amulet secure?"
Upon reporting back the new orders given to them by Lieutenant Arkham, it took quite a while before the Vice President Baines replied in barely restrained anger.
"What? Why would you bring demons back to the Headquarters alive?"
He replies as easily and as quickly as breathing, not wanting to be at the brunt end of getting chastised. "Because they're refugees, Sir." ...Not that he really believes them to be, but orders are orders and he's just a sergeant.
"And the idea of refugees from Hell did not immediately strike you as contradictory?!"
"...Yes, Sir. But..."
"But, what? Put everyone on the line. I am issuing a direct change of orders."
The soldier lightly kicks a severed demon head.
"There isn't really anyone left alive here anymore... Sir."
-
"You should know. Your little trap backfired." Mary approached the projection like the Rabbit was really in front of her, face smug, but voice laced with venom. "I shut down your fucking Frankenstein Lab."
"The families you locked up in here are being evacuated as we speak." Wait, what? Families? You snapped your head towards her in disbelief. She still doesn't...
Dante turned to you for an explanation but you shook your head, silently telling him that you'll give him one later.
"It's over."
No matter how sure she is of herself, it was waved off by the Rabbit. "All trivialities. Means to an end." He shrugs, smiling, and points at her. "But your point still stands Lieutenant. It is over."
"My army is about to descend down this city and cause unimaginable deaths. Unless you and Dante come to meet us first."
Huh?
"You have 30—"
"This doesn't make sense." Mary cuts him off, getting agitated. The Rabbit only tilts his head, humoring her. "Which part exactly?"
"You have the entire amulet and Sparda's sword, everything you need to collapse the wall... Why the fuck haven't you done it already?! Why need us?!"
"Because that's not the only key." The Rabbit grinned at your words. Something tells you that you're playing right into his hand. Regardless of which, you need to relay this information. "He kept Dante alive. He kept you alive. With how everything was going, we should've been dead by now. But we're not."
Donning Dante's coat, you fixed your gaze to the two of them. "He needs a blood sacrifice. Specifically, your blood."
"But why? What's so special about us?!"
"I'm the son of Sparda, if that helps."
"What?!"
You grimaced at her reaction. Dante has half the amulet that opens up the demon world and it didn't cross her mind that he might be related to Sparda in any way? Was this really the organization you were supposed to be a part of...
Shaking your head, you glanced at the Rabbit who seemed to be enjoying you uncovering his plans. "There's that with Dante, but with you..." Your gaze falls back to Mary, but no matter how much you think about it, you can't really connect her with any of this except for her being a demon hunter. "...Does he need a sacrificial maiden?"
"No, he could easily get a random lady. There's something else—"
The sound of applause cuts you off, and on the projection shows the Rabbit with an eerie smile. "Well done piecing together every clue we've left behind. As expected from the one who tamed Firestorm."
You scowled. "As long as neither goes, your plan doesn't work. Pretty sloppy if you ask me."
But the Rabbit only released a laugh. "Yes... And we both know these two are arrogant enough to come anyway."
Damn it. Glancing behind you, you sighed. He's right.
Then, the Rabbit leans in close, as much of the projection allows him too, smiling too eerily at you. "Y'know, we could really use someone with the likes of you. You're far too smart for a human that it'll be a shame to let you die so soon. What do you say in the prospect of joining our ranks? You've already proven yourself worthy of Agni and Rudra."
"Ew. No, hard pass." You slunk back behind Dante as he stands in front of you and the hologram.
"Well the offer still stands." The Rabbit shrugs and opens a pocket watch. "Thirty minutes, Son of Sparda, Lieutenant."
"If you're not here in that time, or if there's any hint of DARKCOM or the military approaching..."
The Rabbit raises a remote, smiling menacingly before pressing it. The building started shaking with the distant sounds of explosion not far from where you were at.
"Then I give the command to strike."
Dante snatches you by his coat in a split second before jumping out of the exploding building with Mary in tow.
"This world's reckoning is already in motion."
"All you can do now is ease its passing."

EP 5.3 Repaying A Debt
Devil May Cry x Reader Insert
Warnings: It's DMC. Based on the New Netflix Series and DMC3. Spoiler warnings for the actual show and game. Not proofread. Canon divergent.
EP. 5.2 Wrong Ways To Use A Sword (prev.)
EP. 5.4 So You Haven't Changed After All (cont.)
Synopsis: Mary continued to chase the Rabbit's trail.
Tumblr media
For all those years of training, all to do something with the trauma that haunts her, Mary never expected to be saving the demons that caused her life to fall apart.
No. Mary stopped short to take a deep breath, shaking her head to remind her of her new objective. They weren’t just demons, they are— Makaians; and they certainly weren’t the ones who ruined her life.
Right now, what she needs to do is to find a way to get the rest of the DARKCOM forces inside the building, both to get The Rabbit… and to rescue the Makaians he trapped inside here with her.
A creaking of a door at the next corner made her stop, clutching her gun, Mary regulated her breathing and stood perfectly still to keep her presence as little as possible. Someone’s there.
The chevalier demon releases a throaty growl upon finding another empty room, turning to the next one to check for signs of the remaining human in the building. It was infuriating enough that she got away in the first place, despite being intoxicated from the gas and badly injured from the earlier fight on the first floor. He doesn’t know where she had gone to, but he knows that it’s only a matter of time before she’s found, as the building is under lockdown.
Meanwhile, Mary silently breathed in relief when the demon— no, the knight, turned away instead of heading to her direction. Grabbing her chance, she bolted to the nearest elevator, hoping to find the control room after combing through the whole floor. She can't exactly take the stairs, that'll make too much noise and she'll be cornered immediately, not to mention, they're faster than her.
But an explosion nearby nearly knocked her off balance just as she ran across the hall. Her time's running out, that surely notified the demons after her. Vines started slithering past the small gap between the elevator doors after she pressed a button. The plant lady must've been searching through the lifts as she used them to escape earlier. There's already too much noise, she needs to hide, it’s too risky to face two Makaians without proper equipment—
The elevator door was forced open and the plant demon nearly maimed her own ally, stopping short as a disappointed expression appeared on her face. The knight was unimpressed at her actions, giving no reply to her questions about Mary's whereabouts and left wordlessly through the elevator shaft, save for muttering something in Makaian language.
“For Makai.”
Hiding in a dilapidated dumbwaiter, Mary listens in for more info and waits for the chance to move after the plant lady leaves. She overheard her mention of someone named “Plasma”, who's also after her head, but during her time in the building, Mary had only encountered two hostiles… where's the other one?
Frowning, Mary kept the question at the back of her mind as she made her way up the building from the narrow passageway.
On the floor above, a dumbwaiter’s door clangs open and out the Lieutenant Arkham emerges, out of breath and covered in soot and dirt from the accumulated filth over the years the building wasn't tended to. That was the least of her problems, however, as the area she found herself in reeks of rot. The wall to her right is littered with black veins, leading to the door that's almost sealed shut due to how much it's covered in layers of it. There’s a passcode lock at the side, and whatever’s on the other side of the room is valuable enough to be locked away at the higher levels of the building.
Is this the control room? Or The Rabbit’s room?
Mary can’t wander around to search for the password, and her time’s running out with the plant lady on her tail. If what’s behind this door is dangerous, she’ll at least do substantial damage should she go out.
Shooting the lock, she kicked open the door and readied her gun, expecting something waiting for her on the other side. But the stench of rot only grew stronger. With each step inside, her nose scrunched at the unbearable smell, overloading her senses. A faint beeping of a heart monitor made her swivel to the side. Horrified, she finally discovered the source of the rot.
Makaians laid on hospital beds, barely alive, strapped with wires and tubes, as blood pooled out of their bodies. Some were dead with their bodies intact, while some…
The sight made Mary’s head throb, remembering a certain person from her past who did the same to his own body. Gritting her teeth, she shook her head and focused forward. Rats ran past her as she approached the bound Makaians, looking to see if there’s still someone alive to save.
She swore she saw one of them twitch, and went closer to the one who had half of his body sickeningly bloated and bruised. It was… a sight. His pillow and bed are filled with blood, both drying and fresh; and when Mary poked his face, it fell off with an unceremonious thud. Alarmed, she instinctively took a step back, but a hand shot up from the bed behind her, grabbing her wrist. When Mary looked back, she saw her father, purple and bloody, lunging at her with a distorted snarl.
Immediately breaking free to point her gun at him, she soon realized that it was a hallucination, and a Makaian with a likeness to a vampire bat weakly stares at her as he cries blood.
For the first time, Mary looked conflicted as she shot a demon to his death, looking away in remorse as blood splattered around.
…For the first time, she felt pity for what were supposed to be her targets.
The monitor beside the Makaian stops beeping and Mary finally looks at the corpse as her arms fall to her side.
Were they… really like the ones she believed them to be? Like how they were taught to her? Creatures of Hell that aim to invade Humanity and bring them to their knees? No! No, it’s not… They were scared. They wanted a safe place to live! They’re no different than—
Mary rubs off the blood that got to her face.
They’re no different from humans.
Then what was she doing all this time?
“This is just like back then…” She frowns and bows her head. Back then, she saw something similar in an abandoned building. DARKCOM was deployed around the area due to the sudden increase of demons, and ended up finding a group of them who claimed to come in peace, begging her group to let them through as a portal remained open behind them. They were trying to get to safety.
She should’ve listened.
God, she shouldn’t have hesitated.
How long has this been going? How many innocents have she— have they killed? How many, in the name of Humanity’s safety, have they murdered in cold blood?
They weren’t demons. She is.
The slight creak of the door made her snap out of her epiphany, instincts kicking in to aim at the possible hostile.
It’s… a DARKCOM officer?
“Lieutenant! Whew! You almost got me there.” The man sighs in relief and lowers his gun, approaching her while looking around the medical room. “Man, am I glad to see you.”
Mary squints, questions running in her mind as she gives his appearance a once over. She’s sure that the skirmish with the knight and the plant lady would at least make him a little roughened up, but his pristine uniform and clean face raises alarms in her head. Nevermind that, she barely survived the fight, and she’s a lieutenant. How did a nameless soldier get out unscathed? “How did you make it out?”
“Luck, I guess.” The soldier shrugs. Bullshit. Something’s up.
Mary nods and tucks back her pistol, stepping closer and holds out her hand. “Give me your gun.” The man furrowed his brow but reluctantly handed it over. It’s better to have an upper hand between the two of them. If he turns out to be innocent, she still has a better chance at fighting and defending the two of them. If he isn’t, well, at least she has managed to disarm him.
The faint sounds of screams outside alerted the both of them, instinctively tensing with their grip on their weapons. Did something happen to the families? As far as she knows, the building is still in lockdown and reinforcements are yet to get inside. Mary checked her terminal and the tracker still beeps rhythmically, indicating that her target is still in the area. If there’s something else in here, she needs to act fast to fulfill both her missions.
“We’re one floor from the top. The amulet’s still up there.” Mary frowns, determined, and walks past the remaining DARKCOM soldier; but he stops her short to give a report, saying that the only stairs up are at the end of the hall. “I've been on this floor for a while. I have time for a little recon.”
She only spares him a glance, still suspicious, and readies her gun as the two of them slowly made their way to the stairs. “Did you go inside any of the apartments?”
“No. Did you?”
“One of them.”
Mary’s brows furrowed into a scowl, her grip tightening around the rifle. “It's not humans that Rabbit has locked in here, it's demons.”
“But they were…” She hesitates for a split second before looking down. “Different.” Like lost in thought, the Lieutenant looks guilty. “They care for each other, like a family.”
The other officer's comment didn't help with her conflicted feelings. He scoffs and says that it doesn't matter since they're still demons. How can it not matter? This shows that they're not mindless invaders! Regardless of their appearances and origins, they're… human. They have a family.
Mary turns behind her with a glare, seemingly offended. “Not like the ones I signed up to kill.”
The subject of family is a sensitive one when it comes to Mary. She… was from a loving one, up until the demons showed up in their lives. Regardless of that, seeing those families, seeing how the parents are willing to risk their lives for their children? In this scenario, she's the demon who's tearing those families apart. “This is… more complicated than that.” She frowns, looking sick.
“I don't think it's complicated at all.” There it is again, that somehow sickening reply for that soldier. Just how… Does this guy not know compassion? Remorse? This is starting to annoy Mary. “They're demons. We are demons hunters.” Even without turning around, she can hear the condescending smirk that followed.
“Believe me, Lieutenant, nothing good ever came out of Makai.”
Mary stops.
“You mean the demon realm.”
Seemingly caught red-handed, the “officer” drops the act and laughs, lunging at Mary with a spare gun and shoots at her.
Livid, she ran across the hallway to create distance and scaled the wall to misdirect his shots, before aiming at him with his own rifle. The barrage of bullets that came from her landed their marks, but instead of collapsing from blood loss, his limbs blew up and exploded, exposing blue matter. Mary’s eyes narrowed. He's a Makaian. The third hostile, Plasma.
“You just did me a favor.” A distorted voice comes out of the shapeshifter in front of her, with limbs hanging grotesquely in the air, only connected with strings of blue matter all around his body. Electricity crackled as he showed his true form, a one eyed Makaian with a translucent body. “Now it doesn't have to be a fair fight.” Plasma grins.
Tentacles transformed from his back and shot towards Mary, which was parried with her own bullets. Regardless of her abilities, her bullets only phase through his body. In a split second decision of ditching the rifle for the anti-demon pistols, Plasma’s appendages pierced through her skin, locking her in place before he delivered a point blank blow that sent her flying towards the staircase. The debris from the impact fell downstairs, alerting the other Makaian on Mary’s trail.
“There you are…” The plant lady hissed and slithered upwards.
Horrified that she’s found, Mary tried to move, only for one of Plasma’s tentacles to wrap itself around her foot, throwing her to a wall with such force that it broke through concrete. Disoriented, she narrowly escaped decapitation from Plasma's now-blade-like limb that grazed her neck. “Wait!”
“I know what you are…!” She winced and tried to compose herself, explaining that she knows about their situation and can help them out. “So, let's negotiate.”
Despite being a traitor, this one had interacted with her and her team for a short while. Even when he could’ve just taken them all out before they could reach the building, he stayed with everyone until the end. Perhaps she could reason with him. Make him see what she sees—!
But Plasma wasn’t fazed, only looking at her like she lost her mind. “Your current position doesn't seem to offer much leverage.” Blood starts dripping out of Mary’s wound as the blade presses deeper. Desperation made her blurt out that she can help them find a way to coexist with humans if he helps her go against the Rabbit. The Plasma before her narrows his only eye and retracts his arm, but before Mary could think that he’s on her side now, the wall behind him gets blown away as another one bulldozes through it. The plant lady!
“You were the one Jester wanted the most… All this for a drop of blood—!”
Left with her weapons across the room, the second she moved, the plant-like Makaian readied her thorns. For a moment, she thought of Ninja and King, was this what they felt when they were about to die from her? Mary instinctively closed her eyes in anticipation of what’s to come, but the projectiles didn’t hit her, and only a shriek of pain was heard.
The serpent lady’s burnt body falls forward in front of Mary, and behind it stood her former prisoner.
They looked like they’ve been through something like herself, with visible cuts and bruises across their body. Mary noted their missing coat and new… sword? This person is usually hip-to-hip with the hellblood— no, Dante, so why are they here?
It doesn’t matter, with them here, the two of them have a better chance at going against the Rabbit. “Thank you—”
“Were you seriously trying to negotiate with a demon?”
Mary stops getting up, slowly raising her head to you. Due to the flickering and dying lights, shadows cast over your face, but that didn’t obscure the look of scorn directed towards her. Left shocked, she couldn’t reply fast enough, only left to stare at you incredulously. She knows you’re hostile since she fought you and Dante, but this… you… this is different.
“I’m not here for you.” Of course. She’s not surprised that you don’t trust her, nor that you’ll help her, but she needs to take this chance to reason with you. With your help, they can be…
Groaning, she forced herself up, rummaging through her medkit to patch up her injury. “There’s families in this building. Innocents trapped by Rabbit.” Mary turns to you with a serious expression while you tilt your head, having rested the sword over your shoulders. “They have nowhere to go, but with my- our help, they can live safely—”
“Was that the shtick they stuck with this time?” Mary’s eyes widened at your words. “Tell me more, I couldn’t exactly make out what they were talking about through the cameras earlier.” Irked, she steps forward, voice rising in anger. “They were suffering, looking for a place where they could be safe. The air was poisonous and they’ve been preyed upon in Makai…!”
That strange sword was then pointed at her, only a few centimeters away from her neck. “You’re a demon hunter, aren’t you? Act like it. Those were goblins. It’s their nature to fool everyone for their survival. Poison air in the demon world my ass. What you saw and heard was just another one of their games.” What?
YN narrows their eyes at her. How could they say that?! They weren’t there! They didn’t see how the Makaians helped her! How they risked their safety for her!
Enraged, Mary activates her wrist bands, immediately getting ahold of her weapons and pointing it back at you. Her act only made you crack a smile as Agni slowly heats up; however, before a fight could break out, the building shook from another explosion just above where the two of you. Your momentary distraction enabled Mary to get a clean aim at your face, missing but was able to scratch skin.
After a beat, the two of you jumped back to gain distance, with Mary shooting bullets at you. Unfortunately, none of it lands a mark as with only one swing, they were melted from your sword’s flames. How did you possess such a weapon? This wasn’t in your records when they did a background check on you. As far as she knows, you aren’t the type to prefer melee weapons.
After narrowly missing getting her hair singed is when it clicked on her, that’s the red Makaian’s weapon! But how did it fall on your hands? It doesn’t matter, if it’s from them, then…
Switching to her anti-demon pistols, Mary lunged at you with a war cry, raining down the specialized bullets in your direction. When silence stretched as smoke filled the room, her shoulders slightly relaxed, releasing a breathy sigh—
—And lost more air when something hit her on the stomach, sending her flying across the room. As the air cleared out, Mary groaned against the wall and saw that her bullets were uselessly scattered on the ground. When she looked up and saw the look on your face, she flinched, wondering if you were the same cocky YN she caught a few hours ago.
The weapon that was lazily draped over their shoulder glowed red, and Mary braced herself for another attack, only for a distinctly familiar voice to boom from it. “For all that trouble, I say we kill her.” It’s the red Makaian’s voice! It’s coming from the… sword?
“No.” You frowned and turned around to leave, but the sword kept bickering with you, asking to kill her. With your back turned, it’s the perfect time to strike. “Wait—” But as Mary moved forward to chase after you, her body gave out from the beatings she experienced within the past hour, and by the time she looked up…
You were gone.
“Damn it…” Forcing herself up, Mary cursed and limped towards the door, clutching at the door frame and calming herself. She has limited ammunition left, and who knows where that Plasma fled after you appeared? Even if you’re at odds, it’s her responsibility to protect anyone she could.
She doesn’t know what happened nor how you got ahold of that weapon, but it’s too dangerous to be wielded. Despite her questions, she’s certain of one thing: if you’re in this building, you might also be after Rabbit. That saves her the trouble of persuading you to join her. Mary clutched her gun and made her way out of the room and to the stairs. Her tracker still shows her that the Rabbit is right above this floor so—
Mary stops and walks back, having passed by a room full of monitors. The door is slightly ajar but she isn’t taking any chances. Kicking it open, she rolls over as she reaches the center, guns ready and aimed… at nothing. Only the faint purple glow of computers greeted her. It’s a control room.
Surprised at her unexpected discovery, Mary steps closer and finds that it showcases camera feeds from all over the building. Every floor and room seems to have one… Was this how the Rabbit monitored their movements? Her eyes narrowed in confusion upon those that showed static instead of a normal feed, were they broken? There’s too many…
Her eyes landed on a certain feed upon scanning the rest and immediately winced at the sight, looking away. It was a first floor camera. The sight of her comrades’ corpses reminded her of her own shortcomings as their captain, having foolishly led them to their deaths. Swallowing a lump in her throat, another feed caught her eyes.
Are those DARKCOM reinforcements?
She hasn’t been able to get any contact since they were trapped inside the building, but their lack of response in the radio must’ve also alerted those from the other side. If there are still hostiles around, and with the Rabbit being in the building, their timing couldn’t be more impeccable. But any reinforcements are useless if they can’t get inside. Scanning the console in front of her, Mary’s eyes narrowed as she found the one that can open up the gates.
“Time to change up the odds.”
But before she could activate it, the barriers rose up, making the other soldiers march inside. Confused, Mary looked around for an explanation and saw something strange.
She realized too late that there’s also a camera watching her from inside the room.
Snapping her gaze back at the monitors, she saw that beneath the barriers lay bombs that were about to go off. Mary immediately screamed at her communicator for them to stand back as she watched them march inside the building. It was a miracle that the leading officer finally heard her from all the signal jamming, saving the rest of the squad after the bombs went off.
“Status report…” Mary groaned, switching frequencies to connect the building to the DARKCOM channel after her communicator got busted. The soldiers reported only two casualties, but assured her that they could still fight. The news of only losing two soldiers did nothing to prevent another wave of guilt inside her. But she must continue to lead the charge, and this time, there will be no more casualties. “...Get everyone on the line.”
Mary flicked the “ON AIR” switch, connecting the speakers of the building alongside the soldiers’ in a similar channel. “To any de– to any Makaian who can hear me, this is Lieutenant Mary Ann Arkham of DARKCOM speaking.”
“I know, you’re not here to attack anyone.”
“I know you only came to this realm because you can’t survive where you’re from.”
“And I know the White Rabbit keeps you trapped and in fear.”
“That ends now.”
“My team is gonna come in and take you all somewhere safe.”
“This is a rescue mission only.”
“I know you might’ve been… hurt before by people like us.”
“But you’re not our enemy.”
“The Rabbit is.”
“And every bit of pain he’s caused we’re gonna pay him back in full.”
“Is that understood?” Mary stands up straighter as she turns off the building’s connection to the channel. The camera shows her that the soldiers are murmuring to themselves, unsure of what to do in this ridiculous situation. She knows that they’re confused about her sudden order, rescue demons as demon hunters? “Uh, the words, yeah.”
“The reason…”
“The reason is that the ones here aren’t fighters. They’re refugees.” Mary cuts the soldier off, explaining her side of the story. “The Rabbit has a device that lets them travel between realms. They had no choice but to go with him.” Her brows furrowed at the memory of the Makaian family. “I’m alive because they helped me. I owe them this.”
“So, what do we do with them?”
“Load them on the trucks and take them to HQ. I’ll meet you there.”
“...What are you gonna do?”
Mary cocks her gun before responding, expression determined as she turns her back at the monitors. “I’m gonna make it so that the Rabbit needs a magician to pull him out of his own asshole.” With that, she runs out of the control room and  up the stairs, following closely the constant beeping in her tracker. She only hopes that you’re still here by the time she arrives.
Halfway through the stairs, however, she immediately picked up the smell of something burning. This alerted Mary enough to hasten up, pointing her gun at the corner and finding the room at the end of the corridor to be burning. Upon checking her tracker, that’s where the amulet, and possibly the Rabbit, should be. But why is it…
Mary recalls your sword. This must be your doing.
She didn’t need to sneak up to the room to get a glimpse of what’s happening inside, for the door broke down from the fire not long after she approached it, showing her the current ongoing fight between you and… Dante? The sight confused Mary. Aren’t you two allies? Why are you against each other now— no, something’s not right. Now that she takes a closer step, she can overhear him saying something about you needing to snap out of it.
Mary’s eyes landed on your form, since when did you have two of those swords? The sight of a familiar blue Makaian’s corpse nearby confirmed her suspicions. That’s another weapon from Hell. You’re clearly possessed, but with those blades in your hands, it’ll be difficult to take you down… the fair way.
This is a gamble but, Mary rummaged through her remaining equipment and fished the same bomb she used at your apartment last night. If this was enough to immobilize you two yesterday, this should give her enough opening to subdue you even in this state. The hard part is detonating this just in time and close enough to take you by surprise, but with how focused you are in Hellbloo— Dante, this could just work in her favor.
Throwing the bomb to your direction, Mary covered her ears and hid behind a pillar, waiting for the small shockwave that followed. Fortunately, her plan worked, and you seemed to have returned to your senses, albeit while in pain. Dante was also caught in the process, but compared to you, he can easily get by just fine after. But this is only a temporary solution, she can’t risk you attacking anyone again with that power. She’ll do this to Dante later if he jumps at her too.
Pointing her gun at you, she shoots a tranquilizer to your neck, knocking you unconscious as you fall to Dante’s arms.

Synopsis: Separated from Dante, your psyche slowly started to change the longer you held onto Agni.
Tumblr media
The rush of wind to your ears was unpleasant at best, and the explosion above your head didn’t help at the slightest, now you have to dodge flaming plane debris as you struggle to open your eyes.
Flipping yourself so you’re falling to your back, you snapped your eyes open to assess the situation. On your right is Enzo and some male staff screaming in terror. On your left is the Vice President Baines and the sole flight attendant on board. A roar from above revealed an incoming blast of wind, which made you instinctively bring your arms up to shield yourself. The second you did however, a sudden surge of pain from your injuries made you cry out, and a blast of inferno, like a response, cut through Rudra’s attack.
“Huh?”
You managed to say as you brought the red scimitar near your face. Did you do that? No, you don’t have abilities, so how—
“Do not let Rudra get ahold of me! You lot won’t be able to beat him otherwise!”
“What the fuck?!”
Your reaction stirred a scratchy laughter from Agni, who, in his weapon form, had started assisting you as his master. Every debris falling your way was burnt to ashes with every swing of his weapon. It doesn’t matter if you get hit or not, you’re still free falling to your death. With a sharp breath, you twisted your body to see your current altitude, but it only made your fears worse as chills ran through your body. No amount of planning ahead would get you out of here. No matter if you wield a weapon or if you’re a demon hunter, you can’t survive falling to your dea—
“Dante!” You screamed and looked up, nearly flying haphazardly from the sudden change of position. You don’t know if your voice reached him through the air resistance but the way he ducked his head and aimed his descent towards your direction proved otherwise. “Parachutes!”
“What?!”
“Para—” You grunt and swung the scimitar towards the direction of the cockpit, flames bursting out and enveloping the area,—
How precisely can you control your flames?
Don’t underestimate me!
“—chute!” incinerating the shell, making its contents fly away for everyone to see.
I did it! I… Your eyes widened and landed at the scimitar in your hands. Clutching it with shaking hands. I did it.
Returning your gaze upwards, you gasped, scandalized.
The parachute bags nearly caught on fire as it flew in different directions…
Bringing Agni closer to your face, you squeezed the hilt like you could strangle him. “You idiot?! You said you could control it?!” The demon merely laughed in response and told you that he did what you asked, like he didn’t just let the only thing to save everyone here from certain death be carelessly destroyed. The audacity of this—
You can’t deal with another stress inducing event to worsen the pain in your body, at least it’s only Agni—
Dante grabbed your arm from above, donning a grin and holding a bag close to your face. Upon looking up, you saw that everyone had a parachute deployed, ensuring their safety from the fall. As expected of Dante, he works fast. You grinned back, grabbing the bag with your free hand and was about to wear it when Rudra came from above, swinging his sword down at you two. In a split second decision, you kicked Dante out of the way.
The dull pain from your body slowly woke you up. Your arms scrape against dust and concrete, some poking at skin when you try to move your limbs to sit up. Did you faint? What happened, where are you—
Coughing from what seems like smoke mixed with debris, what greeted you when you opened your eyes is a large hole by the wall, with a few embers still clinging to life at the edges. The building’s frames jut out like they’re melted from the outside, and around you is a circle of dying fire.
Agni?
What happened? You were falling and suddenly Agni made a ball of fire around you. Something hit you two after that and next thing you know you’re in who knows where. On your hand still rests the scimitar where the demon resides, but you don’t think you could even lift it despite the weight being adjusted for you. You don’t even think you could stand up, body littered with bruises and broken bones. If a free fall from the sky didn’t kill you, your internal injuries would.
“Besides, what’s that smell?” Bringing your free hand to your face, you restrain the urge to throw up as a foul stench enveloped the whole room. God, is there something behind you? Please don’t be a demon… You can’t fight at your current condition.
You didn’t think that hearing a demon’s voice could calm your nerves. “Relax, they’re just fodders.” Agni reassures you, giving you the courage to take a peek, finding burnt demon corpses all around you. This isn’t better from finding a live demon ready to maul you. Their humanoid shape isn’t helping, now you really want to throw up. All of them looked like they were taken by surprise from the sudden fireball that crashed in this room.
Looking away, you tried to stand up, only for your knees to buckle and reduce you into a coughing fit. Fuck, did Rudra punctured your lungs? You might as well stay here and wait for Dante to show up and rescue you. He always does, so why would this time be any different?
…But you don’t want to stay in a room full of demon corpses, not when they remind you of…
With a sharp inhale, you forced yourself to stand up, using Agni as a makeshift crutch.
Every step towards the door feels like hell. Not only is the stench getting stronger, the way the demons looked in their last moments is making you remember something unpleasant. The way they looked that day, the way they pleaded for your help, the way you foolishly—
Was that foolish? Of course! They’re demons! You freed hundreds of them! You were trained to kill them yet you…
You barely got to reach the door knob when visions of your childhood started rushing in your mind like a dam that finally broke. Those humanoid demons behind the cages… Their pleas despite the lack of understanding between the two of you… That blue demon—
Bile caught at the back of your throat. Forcing it down and sucking a breath, you grit your teeth and turn the knob; but just as the lock clicked open, you felt someone holding the handle from the other side. If this room is filled with demons, then only a demon would be on the other side of the door. Despite your circumstances, you won’t go down without a fight. You might not be able to last long, but you’ll take them by surprise.
Agni seems on board with your idea, his scimitar already glowing red, ready to combust.
Pulling the door open, you swung the demon weapon towards the other party, stopping short when it turned out to be a human…?
Judging from his uniform, he’s a DARKCOM officer. But why would their group be here? Were they hunting demons? Is this the warehouse that that officer told you about? No, this doesn’t concern you. For all you know, you’ll get apprehended again if you stay within this guy’s vicinity.
You withdrew Agni, and the officer in front of you lowered his hands. He seems shocked, like he has seen a ghost, eyes never leaving you until he glanced at the scimitar at your hands. What’s this guy’s deal? You glared and put the weapon behind your back, obstructing his view of Agni. Is he going to interrogate you right now?
The thought alone adds to your headache, so you push past him to get out of the situation, only for his arm to shoot out and grab yours. Wincing from pressure on your right arm, you were about to curse him when his grip loosened and he put a finger on his lips to signal you to be quiet, before practically dragging you to another dilapidated room. Upon entering, he presses you between the wall and his body, covering your mouth while turning his head away like a lookout. Your confusion and attempt to murder soon dispersed when no later than a minute, the knight demon you saw back at the highway opened the door of the room you're currently in.
Your body froze, unsure of what to do. Even if you're standing behind the door, anyone could figure out that you're there. But for some reason, the demon left like he saw nobody. Left with a slightly ajar door, the two of you peeked through it to see the knight demon, marching with poise but with an unnatural speed, stand outside the elevator.
When another demon emerged from the lift, you can feel the officer grow tense until they both left the floor, before loosening his grip on you. Immediately, you turned around and pinned him to the wall, his arms up in surrender as you pressed Agni against his neck. “Why is DARKCOM here? And what was that about?”
His smirk falters when you pressed Agni deeper to his skin, nearly cutting through to draw blood. He soon explains that he was separated from his squad as they were tasked to hunt down the White Rabbit, and has been hiding from the demons ever since. A soldier who was able to survive on his own despite a group of formidable demons in the vicinity? It’s either he’s lucky or this is bullshit.
But he said that the Rabbit is here, and given that this place is littered with his lackeys, he must be telling some kind of truth. He did save you, after all, but his appearance is too uncanny for you to drop your guard. He’s too clean, too relaxed, like he wasn’t hiding for his life. You hear him ask about Dante and raise his arms higher upon your scowl. He seems harmless for now, so you let him go, opting to not risk a fight that might alert nearby demons. Even if he’s a DARKCOM soldier, your chances of surviving rely on him for now—
—Nevermind that, you’re ditching him. He asks too many questions, ranging from Dante’s whereabouts, your sword, and if you ran into other DARKCOM members. At least he’s not trigger happy like Lieutenant Arkham. Groaning, you limped towards the door, ignoring him until he asked about your name. That you can answer without giving away too much information, DARKCOM already has info about you so telling this clueless soldier won’t be detrimental in any way. You grabbed the door knob before turning around to answer, the scowl becoming semi-permanent on your face due to the pain.
“(Y/N).”
That was a bit cold. Sighing, you lifted your right arm and rubbed the back of your neck. “You saved me earlier even when I threatened you…”
“Thank you.” Flashing a small smile, you left.
You didn’t see the way his expression changed after the door closed.
Did your injuries make you go soft? Well, at least he didn’t chase after you.
“You were surprisingly quiet earlier.” You glanced at the scimitar at your left, while keeping your other hand by the wall to support yourself. Was Agni being considerate? That's surprising, but not unlikely since you're his master—
“That was a demon. The one from earlier.”
His voice made you stop. What? “A Plasma, shapeshifter. Just a lesser demon. I don't know why the guy saved you, must be planning something for later.” Agni mutters, while you look horrified. Why didn’t he kill you earlier? You were fooled by a mere shapeshifter?? No, whatever the reason is, you need to get out of here.
“Why do you try so hard to get back to the half breed?” Agni huffs while you try your best to ignore the worsening pain in your body. His comments are starting to get really annoying. Before he could utter another word, you snapped and lifted the blade close to your face, ordering him to shut up.
Your breathing picked up as you tried to move faster, head whipping in both directions to look for the best route to use. Panic filled your system at the prospect of being trapped in a building full of demons.
Where's the staircase? Do you need to wait for a while before going down? You shouldn't use the elevator, that might attract the demons to your direction. How many demons are in this building? Are there even DARKCOM officers here? Did they get killed? Is that Plasma planning to use you for later? For Dante?
“So what if there's demons here? Don't you want revenge?”
Revenge? Do you— Do I want revenge? Is that why I became a demon hunter? Right… I…
Something throbbed inside you and you dropped Agni to the ground as you leaned on the nearest wall, head pounding and vision blurring. You're burning up. Releasing a silent groan, you dropped to your knees and curled to yourself despite your mind yelling at you to move. Your head is killing you, it's hard to breathe, your legs are getting numb… Everything hurts!
Tears welled up in your eyes, blurring your vision as you cried in pain. Is this how you'll die? No! Not like this! You need to get to Dante! You… You refuse to be at any demon's mercy again!
A shadow blocks your vision, making your eyes move up to see your soon-to-be killer. But they leaned closer and draped your arm over their shoulder, helping you stand up. When they realized that you can’t move, they scooped you in their arms and started moving. Who is this? Broad chest and strong shoulders…
“Dante…?” Did he come for you? He found you…
“That ain't the half-breed.”
“Like I'd want to be anything like him.”
Your eyes shot open, the voice that replied to Agni is nothing like your partner’s. Scanning the body of the person carrying you, the default armor of DARKCOM and the face of the soldier from earlier greeted you. It's the Plasma!
Hooking your left leg over his shoulder and wrapping it behind his neck, you used it as a leverage to twist your body and climb behind him. Trapping his neck between your calf and thigh, your other leg pressed behind his head to further choke him. Agni suddenly manifested on your right hand as your left kept Plasma’s head in place. Seeing red, the scimitar exploded as you swung it down, decapitating the demon and igniting its head.
Something caught your eye and you kicked yourself off of him, sending his body stumbling across you. You forced yourself up, breathing picking up and high in adrenaline, you readied yourself for another strike, only for the Plasma to regenerate his head and dodge. He slowly starts getting closer, hissing your name while looking around as he narrowly avoids getting incinerated. “I’m trying to help you!”
What?
“Bullshit!” Agni cackles. “Don’t tell me you’re going against him now!” Whatever distance the shapeshifting demon reduced was immediately meaningless when a line of fire was sent his way, making him back away to avoid the attack. Agni’s words seem to have taken effect, as this “soldier” visibly winced. Is he that loyal to the Rabbit?
With that said, he stopped getting near and held his arms in surrender, looking at you with a desperate expression. “There are bombs all over this building. If you want to live, come with me.” He pleads, and when you showed no signs of abating, he sighed.
“Don’t say I didn’t warn you. You… weren’t supposed to be here in the first place.” The demon looks away and turns around, his back on you. “I’ll try to lead the others away from you, use that chance to escape. If you live… then we’ll call it even.”
The sheer incredulity of the situation made you stay in place as you watch the Plasma walk away. What… Did that demon just… Was he really trying to help you? Your shock was cut short when your headache started acting up again, making you groan in pain and drop Agni in favor of clutching both sides of your head.
You should chase after him. No…! It’s better to escape! You believed him?! He’s a demon! It’s a trap, it’s always a trap with their kind! But Dante’s part-demon… That shapeshifter tried to kill the both of you back then! Yeah, he did… But he could’ve easily killed me by leaving me for the knight and plant demon to find…
“You’re seriously trusting a demon?” Agni’s head greeted you when you opened your eyes, seemingly having collapsed to the floor yet again. Huh? He could do that…? “After what they’ve done to you?” You squinted, confused at his sudden behavior. “Maybe you haven’t changed after all.”
“Such a meddlesome child…” Your brother’s body, bloody and torn apart, replaced the demon beside you.
Horrified, you tried sitting up, suddenly being surrounded by that alleyway from all those years ago. Your brother’s eyes tracked your movements, form lifeless but looking like he could get reanimated in any second. You hit something as you back away, making you turn to see what it was and finding yourself in a familiar living room, surrounded by the corpses of your parents. Bodies littered with grotesque injuries were haphazardly thrown around, each with an expression of surprise and horror in their faces. A movement from your peripheral vision made you whip your head to the side, meeting eyes with a younger you, who stood behind the partially open door.
“When will you stop running away?”
Your fingers twitched as you woke up, movement slow and careful as you stood up, heading towards the nearest stairs. Agni manifested on your hand as you stopped in front of it. “How do I detonate the bombs?” He replies by saying that there’s a control room at the top of the building, used by the Rabbit to monitor the demons they’re experimenting with. So there are others here, probably inside the rooms.
Trudging up the stairs, your eyes stared off to the distance, head hung low while trying to ignore unpleasant memories and voices that crowded your head. You don’t know if Agni is speaking or you’re talking outloud, but you can’t hear anything, mind blank as you make your way to the upper floors. The only sensation you can still register is the rough hilt of Agni’s weapon form.
After arriving on the floor before the last one up, Agni notified you that the control room is right across the hallway, surprisingly unlocked when you opened it. Even without a proper light source, the glow from the multiple screens completely illuminated the room. Each monitor displays feed from a camera inside every room, giving you full access to every demon’s whereabouts in the building.
You stopped short when you noticed another camera angled towards the console, if this is the control room, why should this be under surveillance? For remote monitoring? For intruders?
Using the scimitar in your hands, you slowly walked to the blindspot and raised the camera above, preventing the camera from seeing you as you approached the console. While examining the control panel, your eyes glanced at your left, wondering if the camera was being operated by someone. With nothing in its feed, it will surely notify someone. No matter, you won't take long to accomplish your objective. Returning your gaze to the console, various buttons lay in front of you, with some glowing, indicating an active use. A bright red button with the words “Open Gate” is at the side.
Upon closer look, a monitor on your left shows DARKCOM vehicles arriving.
Like you care if other DARKCOM reinforcements get in. You’re here to bring every demon in this building to their death. What you need to do is find the detonator. There’s a strange, empty area on the console, with markings of where a button should be. Found it.
Before you could figure out how to trigger it from the buttons nearby, movements from another camera made you glance above.
Hands falling back, your eyes widened in both horror and realization. Humanoid demons with green skin and horns protruding at their head fills the majority of the rooms.
You grabbed the back of your head, still gaping at the monitor, as flashes on what happened that day resurfaced once again. They looked exactly like the ones DARKCOM used as live targets, the ones they made your family keep until needed for practice. A strangled laugh escapes your throat.
Flicking the microphone on, specifically for the speakers inside the rooms, you spoke. “Goblins, aren’t you?” You grabbed the console for support as your shoulders shook from laughing. The demons immediately snapped their heads to the speakers and cameras in their rooms. A particular group hissed at it, clutching a “baby” that did the same. After a while, you smile brightly even when there’s no one to see it, introducing yourself in the process. “I’m quite acquainted with the likes of you. Appealing to the nearest threat to manipulate them to do your bidding…” With a free hand, you replayed the recording from that certain room, scoffing at what you saw.
Lieutenant Arkham.
Grabbing the mic with two fingers, you grinned maliciously. “How disgusting.”
“How about a game? I know you’re all stubborn fucks who’ll keep the charade until the very end so let’s make it more convincing...” You stepped back, away from the surveillance camera to your left, and extended your arms wide. “I’ll be the big bad human that’ll hunt the pitiful demons seeking safety!” You declared.
Pointing the glowing scimitar to the monitors, you grinned maliciously. “So you better make this fun.”
With Agni cheering you on, you kick the door open and slowly turn your head to the staircase, your smile widens as you hear the doors of the rooms below slam open. Picking up your pace, you ran past the younger you and jumped down the stairs, right in front of the countless goblins who stare at you in horror. Head hung low, you slowly rose to your feet, placing your hand to your chest and bowing slightly— “In case I haven’t made it clear yet, I’m a devil hunter.”
—Before breaking into a grin. “Please send my regards to the demon king.”
Getting into a batter position, you swung the ignited scimitar and a line cut through the whole floor before it exploded in flames. You tilted your head, confused and disappointed, before grinning in realization. “So your accuracy is shit in exchange for widespread damage?”
Seeing movement far across the corridor, your heart pounded from adrenaline as you gave chase to the survivors. Passing by incinerated corpses, you leapt through another flight of stairs and skewered a demon’s head as you landed directly at it, head exploding from the sudden heat of the scimitar. Jumping off the corpse, you swung Agni from above, sending another wave of fire through the hallway in front of you. The few goblins who didn’t immediately fled, jumped at you from their rooms, which you gladly welcomed with violently cutting their bodies in half from the serrated side of your scimitar. Floor by floor, you were covered in demon blood and surrounded with their last shrieks of pain as they got burned alive. Before you know it, you’re halfway down the building.
Suspiciously, you’ve only encountered the lesser demons, where were those alongside Rabbit? That demon knight, demon lady, and… that Plasma—
“Doesn’t it feel good? You’re finally doing what you should’ve done instead that day.” Panting, your eyes slowly trailed towards the human child in front of you, wearing your face but looking extremely out of place in such a gruesome setting. They point behind you, before smiling. “Don’t you hesitate now.”
The slithering of something against debris made you swing Agni behind you, burning against a thick vine. Before you is the plant-like demon lady, hissing and shooting thorns at your direction as she backs away to gain distance. In terms of elemental weakness, you have the upper hand. Using Agni as a makeshift shield for her projectiles, you made your way towards her while continuously sending waves of fire in every swing.
Seeing her disadvantage, vines shot from the floor and walls, restraining you before you could launch another attack—
—Which didn’t deter you in the slightest, as you only spared your restraints a glance before the ones on your wrists burned away from Agni’s flames, which made it easy to cut through the remaining vines. Overwhelming the demon with a barrage of attacks, she was forced to retreat to her snake-like form and flee.
“Are we playing tag?” You lazily put Agni over your shoulder as you watch her figure speed up to the nearest staircase. “No matter, I’ll kill you later—”
Multiple gunshots from above made you stop on your tracks. Looking up at the ceiling, your eyes narrowed in focus before cracking a smile upon realizing what’s happening. Turning back, you rushed upstairs and onto the floor where the control room is at.
“Just kidding, I’ll kill you now!”
Annoyed and out of breath from having to chase her all the way up, you were relieved to see that she didn’t even make the effort to hide herself, recklessly ramming herself to a wall. Had she lost her mind? Picking up your pace, you furrowed your brows as you heard shouts from the room the demon was frantically trying to get inside. The moment she was able to break through concrete, you finally caught up and swung your sword just in time to see Lieutenant Arkham on the other side of that room.
A gasp and a shriek later, you were finally able to get a roasted demon.
Lieutenant Arkham looks shocked as the demon’s corpse falls between the two of you, before finally composing herself, stuttering words of gratitude. Meanwhile, you finally pieced what happened a few moments prior to your arrival. Grimacing, you cut her off.
“Were you seriously trying to negotiate with a demon?”
Her reaction was enough to answer your question. You know she’s unreasonable with DARKCOM’s regime drilled into her, but this is another level of idiocy. Also, did she think you’re here to help her? A few minutes ago, maybe, but now—
“I’m not here for you.” You grimaced and was about to turn your heel around when she spoke again, speaking something about innocents trapped here by Rabbit. She was imploring your help to save them. What irony, if only she knew what you just did. Your grip around Agni’s hilt tightens as you face her. “Was that the shtick they stuck with this time?”
Her expression told you everything you need to know. This woman was easily fooled.
“Tell me more, I couldn’t exactly make out what they were talking about through the cameras earlier.” You cracked a smile as you approached the lady, whose face looked like she took great offense from your words. She continued her argument, saying that the demons have been suffering, yearning for a safe place to be, for Makai is—
You had enough of this nonsense.
Sneering, you pointed Agni at her, only a few centimeters before piercing skin, cutting her off. “You’re a demon hunter, aren’t you? Act like it.” Her look of confusion further ticked you off. She reminds you too much of yourself in the past. Desperate to do the job right but wavers the moment they start fraternizing with the target. Did she forget that the demons were the ones that got her team killed? “Those were goblins. It’s their nature to fool everyone for their survival. Poison air in the demon world my ass.” The last time I met them, they wanted to go home. Your grip on Agni’s hilt tightened at the memory. “What you saw and heard was just another one of their games.”
That further ticked the Lieutenant off, and in a second, she activated her wrist bands to point her guns at you.
She wants to fight. Cracking a smile, Agni slowly heats up. Then so be it. Before you could move to land a strike, however, you were momentarily outbalanced by the sudden shake of the building. Something landed just above the two of you.
Your momentary distraction was enough for Lieutenant Arkham to aim at your face, only missing if not for your eyes suddenly tracking her movement. It didn't mean that she didn't land the shot, as blood now runs down from your cheek. The two of you were stuck in a stalemate until the shaking stopped.
The moment stillness returned, the two of you jumped back to gain distance, before exchanging bullets and blows. After dodging her shots and decreasing the gap, you swung the lit up Agni to her, melting the next batch of lead meant for you. She seemed to catch on that what you have in your hands is not a normal weapon as she quickly switched into her anti-demon pistols, bombarding you with the specialized bullets with a war cry.
Smoke accumulated around you as you shielded yourself with Agni, tanking her attacks while taking a gamble that it only affects the biological bodies of demons.
The familiar sounds of a gun clicking in place, indicating the lack of bullets left, was finally heard, and the unexpected smokescreen was still around as you relaxed, with Agni still intact in your hands. This was almost too easy. DARKCOM was yet to improve their data. The thought made you grin as you delivered a roundhouse kick on the lady the moment her shadow leaned closer.
You stepped out of the smoke as she struggled from being flung across the room. Since when could you do that? You weren't on the physically strong side, that was Dante's part. You specialized in surprise and sneak attacks, so...
"For all that trouble, I say we kill her." Agni's voice cuts through your thoughts, snapping you back to reality as you look down at Lieutenant Arkham's form. She seems surprised at the sound, confused as to why the scimitar in your hands is speaking. Agni continued to "argue" with you, but it faded to the background as you frowned, dismissing his suggestion with a simple "No" as you walked away. It's not worth it. I'm not here for her.
For some reason, the mania from earlier had nearly disappeared, leaving you exhausted. Whatever the reason be, this is not good. Agni's chattering isn't helping either. You think you'll fall over any minute now.
"I'd bet she'll come chasin' after us! Her kind is just that relentl—"
Panting, you stopped your tracks, glancing at the demon in your hands who suddenly grew quiet. "Agni?"
"Rudra's here. Just above us."
His brother? The blue ogre? But why? You're way too far from the plane?
The memory of the wind-wielding demon nearly crushing you to death made you double over and hug yourself. The fear from the horrifying experience was unlike the usual targets you and Dante go after, and this isn't even a targeted commission! You didn't do anything...! Yet, they kept chasing you and Dante! All because of some stupid key to the underworld or some shit. You bit your lip as your body trembled in frustration, with your grip on your arm nearly breaking skin. How dare they...!
"That's another one who hurt you."
The younger version of you stood across you, their ghost of a smile growing wider upon your acknowledgment. They approached your curled up form, looking ethereal compared to your beaten up state. "It's unfair, isn't it?"
Right... Now that you can fight back.... It's only fair to return the favor...
You stood up, limping, and headed for the stairs, with the other you turning their head to follow your movements. Every step feels like you're walking in water, either your body feels too heavy or the thought of killing another demon messes with your head. Nonetheless, you reached the final floor, and Agni's advice for going against his brother just contributes to the desire for payback.
Take him by surprise.
Don't let him create a barrier to shield himself.
Make sure to clash me against his weapon.
Your pace picks up towards the end of the hall, that of which is already destroyed by the impact of Rudra crashing in the building. He remains oblivious of your presence, but a target's a target. Lunging, you swung Agni directly at Rudra's scimitar the moment the latter summoned his’. A shockwave manifests and the blue ogre stumbles back, dropping his weapon and giving you the opening you needed to jam Agni's serrated side on his brother's neck.
The demon growls in annoyance as you purposely wedge it deeper, but not with enough force to cut through, you want him to choke on his own blood. Rudra, on the other hand, does not want a sword stuck in his throat, and he yanks your weapon out, making your body move alongside the sword like a ragdoll as you keep a tight grip against Agni. Your smile grew bigger upon seeing Rudra’s horrified expression when he realized that you were using his own brother to kill him, before he lands his eyes on you. Seeing that he finally recognized you, you lit Agni aflame, burning Rudra’s hand. But the demon doesn’t let go, enduring the pain and whipping his leg at you.
Laughing at the imminent danger, you climbed atop Agni, using him as a springboard and narrowly dodged Rudra’s leg. The blue ogre grabbed his brother's sword and swung it in your direction, seemingly launching an attack, but the scimitar vanished and reappeared on your hands right before he could do so. Having landed right next to his own weapon, you snatched it upon Agni’s orders and beelined at his brother.
Left without weapons, Rudra mimicked your stunt, with his weapon vanishing from your grip the moment you swung it at him. He shielded himself with his wind while you pressed your flaming scimitar against his’, creating a literal firestorm inside the room. Despite himself, Rudra managed to overpower you, breaking the equilibrium and sending Agni flying out of your grip. But when the demon was about to take a swing at you, your grin couldn’t get wider as your scimitar flew back like a boomerang, slicing Rudra's neck off.
You fell on the floor at the same time Rudra's body did, body nearly giving out from the arduous demon hunting. “How ironic…” You released a laugh as you stood up, staggering towards the corpse and pulling out Agni from the wall when he cut past his brother's neck. “You both died the same way.”
“Wait…!”
You glanced at the corpse beside you when the two swords called out at the same time. You could understand Agni, but Rudra? What does he want now?
“You shall take me with you.”
Your expression turned into one of disgust at the audacity. Perhaps the end of the hilt might really be their head as the demon started stumbling over his words at the sight of your disdain. “I— we could be a great help to you!”
“He's right. Besides, there's another demon needing slaying here too.”
The younger you agreed, albeit appearing out of your sight this time. Their words were the only convincing you needed to hear to take Rudra's scimitar, immediately feeling it adjust to your grip in the process. You felt power surging in your body as you wielded the twin demons in your hands, but your vision started swimming once again, this time, tinted red.
As you basked in the high of killing another demon, you raised your head, expecting to see another one of them. But as you met eyes with a pair of familiar blue ones, despite your younger self telling you to kill him, you couldn't bring yourself to point your weapon at Dante.
“(Y/N)...?”
Your smile fell upon hearing your name go past his lips. It's Dante. Oh. The sight of him made your shoulders sag, body relaxing almost immediately. Despite your senses going haywire, with sounds getting muffled before it reaches your ears, and your eyesight betraying you, there’s no way you couldn’t recognize him. “Dante…”
It’s him… You can finally—
The younger you stood behind him, glowing sickly white, staring at you with contempt. Their expression made you stop approaching your partner, as your senses started focusing on them, as all you can hear is their order for you to kill Dante. And when you turned your eyes on him, all you saw was a demon.
No! With twitching hands, you dropped both of your weapons and clutched your head. Within the gaps of your fingers, the figure before you changed rapidly between Dante and a hazy, grotesque demon. He was slowly reaching out to you, but you slapped his hand away in fear. Not to him, but for yourself. What happened to you?
The two of you were shocked at your own actions, and when you glanced at your hand, it had morphed into something else. “Dante… Don’t come near me…” Red continued to cloud your vision, and a crude laughter rang in your ears. The ghostly mimicry of yourself grew in size and phased past Dante, lunging at you. Despite shielding yourself with your arms, the apparition fused with your body, spreading inside like a parasite.
Your body stiffened, before releasing a cry. Every thought, movement, and your whole being was being taken over by something else. Agni and Rudra were resummoned on your hands as you attacked Dante in frenzy. Your weapons are parried with Rebellion, as he tries to snap you out of your haze. But something as simple as words cannot reach you anymore. You’re near to the point of no return, reduced to a killing machine as the host of demonic swords. This is the price you paid for daring to wield the weapons from Hell.
When Dante overpowered you enough to send both weapons flying off of your hands, you jumped out of the way as he swung the wider side of his sword at you, rendering his attempt to knock you out useless. With the distance between the two of you, you started charging towards him, throwing Agni in his direction and swinging Rudra at him. When Agni flew back, ignited, Rudra’s wind picked up the flames, envelopping the area in a storm of fire as your blades clashed with Dante.
The moment the flames got too big, something exploded from your side and an ear splitting sound rang too close to your ear. The pain from the bomb temporarily brought you back to your senses, clearing your sight and seeing Dante clutching his head in discomfort. With shaky hands, you reach out for him as the storm dies down. “Dante…”
—Something shot at your neck, knocking you out.

Synopsis: Separated from each other, Dante thought he lost you forever. The feeling of despair manifested into something sinister.
Tumblr media
He narrowly missed your arm when everyone got sucked outside the plane.
Nevermind the debris he has to avoid, or the screaming of the plane crew, or a demon high on his tail, his primary objective was locating and getting to you. Dante winced as he struggled to open his eyes, scanning every direction for even a strand of your hair. Where are you...?
A certain figure caught his eye, falling farther down than the rest and holding Agni's weapon.
Found you!
But before he could aim his body to fall in your direction, a large gust of wind slammed at his back, knocking the air out  his lungs and sending him spinning uncontrollably in the air.
In hindsight, perhaps he shouldn't have ignored Rudra.
Annoyed, Dante grabbed a broken window and chucked it at the blue demon; only for it to be reduced to pieces before it can touch his target. Seeing his attempt had failed, Dante clicked his tongue and tried to get away while dodging Rudra’s attacks.
"Don't think we're finished just because you managed to awaken your powers!" Rudra shouts from behind him. Who cares about his powers right now?! Everyone's about to fall to their deaths and you... are... too... far...!
Dante grunts and uses the nearby debris as makeshift launchpads, reaching out his arm as far as possible to reduce the distance between the two of you. However, at the corner of his eye, Rudra was preparing another attack not aimed at him. Maneuvering so that he'll take the brunt force of it, Dante braced himself for the attack.
When it didn't come, however, he turned around, horrified, as the gale went around him to target you instead. Before he could finish screaming your name, a large blast of fire intercepted the demon's attack, cancelling it out. Relieved for your safety, and angered at the demon's audacity, Dante grabbed Rebellion from his back and changed tactics.
He's going to kill Rudra for that.
His body started showing signs of changing yet again as he maneuvered back up. The crackling sound of red electricity was barely heard as it moved around his body, leaving behind a trail of crimson on his skin. By the time he was able to reach the demon, his eyes had fully turned red, and Rebellion's "eyes" glowed the same.
His attack was parried with Rudra's own weapon, and blasts of wind shot at him in their brief skirmish. The moment Dante was flung away again, both his arms had fully transformed. His appearance further ticked the demon, having been reminded of what happened in the plane. Pointing his scimitar at Dante, Rudra cries.
“We're not done until you give me back my brother!”
Dante smirked, transformation dulling his sense of reason, fully ready to go back to fighting if it wasn't for a familiar voice snapping him back to his senses.
"Dante!"
He gasped at your voice, head swiveling below and body slowly returning back to normal. Your brows furrowed as you looked at him in worry, barely able to keep yourself still as you spun around. You called for him. That was enough for him to abandon the fight and aim his descent at you.
You were yelling something else but he can barely make it out from how loud everything is, not to mention, dodging the blades of wind hurled at him by Rudra.
"What?!"
Seeing that he didn't hear you, your face scrunched in effort as you swung Agni's sword. He dodged just in time when a pillar of fire shot from below.
"Woah, what the—"
"Parachute!"
Parachutes? Dante looked up and broke into a grin. Flipping his body and using the debris around as launchpads, he maneuvered towards the destroyed cockpit, snatching the bags that survived the fire with a whoop and aimed for the nearest civilian.
“Gotcha!” It was the lone flight attendant on board. With a grin, he tries to placate the screaming lady as he grabs her arm to make her wear the bag. “My first time using one of these!”
“Actually, it's my first time being in a plane too!” Seeing that she's still distressed and squirming, Dante chuckles and tries to crack a joke. “But don't worry. I'm sure this will go much better than that did—”
His smile fell when he saw her face. It's… eerily similar to hers.
“Dante, wake up!” red
Strapping the bag on her, Dante grabbed her shoulders with a serious expression. “You're going to live.” He says, before triggering the parachute.
Next one is the pilot. A staff member. Another staff member. And another. Enzo. That mattress commercial person. Then, you.
“Hey.” Dante smiles and grabs your arm, presenting the last bag. He can probably hitch a ride with yours, yeah? He ain't that heavy, he thinks. You smiled back upon seeing that he understood what you wanted him to do and took the bag from his hands. You were about to put it on until you snapped your head back in horror and kicked him away.
Confused, he steadied himself but didn't even get to see you after the blast. You got hit directly by Rudra’s attack, sending you crashing to a random building below. “No!”
Dante reached out too late again.
“No, no, no!” Dante screamed your name and willed himself to fall faster, anything to reach you. But his body slowly grew slack upon the realization of your fate. You couldn’t possibly have survived that. Without a parachute, you… If only he’d been faster, pushed you away and took the attack instead, then you’ll…
This is just like that night. The demons came attacking, and he was saved by the people he cared about, at the cost of their lives. Dante thought that it’ll be different this time. That he won’t be that boy behind the closet once again. No, this is different. This time, he can take revenge on the demons that did him wrong…!
His body jerked in pain as his veins started glowing gold, with the red electricity crackling around him once more. Voices and visions plagued his mind, amplifying his transformation. Seeing his ward writhing as he fell down, Enzo screamed to get through him. “Dante! What’s happening?”
“Son of Sparda.” red
“Your father left this for you. Always keep it safe.” gold
“They’re here! Where’s your brother?!” gold
“Hide here. I have to find Vergil.” gold
“Dante…” white
The people above him screamed in alarm as Rudra charged at him—
But Dante grabbed the demon’s head before it got too close. His body was strangely suspended midair, akin to standing on nothing. With a frightening grip that nearly crushed Rudra’s skull, the son of Sparda snapped at him with golden eyes.
“YOU…!”
The blue demon was sent hurling to a building with a swing of Dante’s arm, with his limb transforming in the process. Unfortunately, it was an office that Rudra crashed into, eliciting chaos on its wake. Civilians screamed and panicked upon Dante’s sudden appearance, but he paid them no mind as he delivered a roundhouse kick to the demon before he could recover, sending him through the other side of the building, transforming his other leg.
Dante’s breathing grew ragged as he stood, barely containing himself from being consumed by his rage. But every time he tries to calm himself down, he keeps seeing you at the back of his mind. He doubled down in pain while clutching his head, releasing a cry and lunged forwards—-
—Only to be intercepted by Rudra, who charged at him while he was losing his mind. The two flew to the sky while the demon held him by his neck, cackling as Dante claws at his hand. “Nice to see you got in touch with your demon side.”
“I’d felt all silly revenge-killing a human.”
“That bastard died fast but you’ll do—”
Dante’s head snapped at him, eye twitching at the demon’s comment. What did he just say about you? The rest of Rudra’s taunts fell into deaf ears as Dante’s body started spasming, glowing reddish gold.
“The moment I’m done with you, I’ll get my brother back from their corpse—”
Dante screamed.
A large hand with talon-like fingers grabbed Rudra’s wrist, breaking it away from Dante’s neck, while another took hold of his shoulder. In a blink of an eye, the blue demon’s arm was ripped off of his body; and at the same moment, the bright light exploded and revealed a winged demon.
Dante sneered at the yowling Rudra, letting go of his shoulder and kicking him straight to the building below them. The force of his strike sent the demon breaking through floors upon impact, destroying half of the structure. Debris flew around when Dante landed in front of him, with a poised stance compared to the one currently splayed on the ground.
His appearance is unlike what he had a few moments ago.
Gone was the white haired young man wearing a red coat with a shit eating grin. The one who stands in front of Rudra is a demon with a red, reptilian-looking appearance. His wings curled up under his arms, showing an appearance of a “coat”; and with glowing eyes like the gold that peeks through the cracks of his body, and a pair of horns that grew from the edge of his head, framing his face, his form is one befitting of Sparda’s spawn.
Dante looked down at Rudra with disdain.
“You took someone from me.” He spoke, voice now distorted in his new form, throwing the severed arm away as he approached the blue demon. “I’ll kill as many of you as I have to as payback.” Dante’s eyes narrowed as he met eyes with Rudra..
The demon swung his remaining arm, having resummoned his scimitar, at Dante’s face the moment he leaned closer, but it was easily caught without the latter even looking at it. “Then, I’ll kill the rest.” With that, he started landing blows on the barely alive demon, creating cracks on the concrete from the force of his punches.
“But first… where is my necklace?!” Every word was punctuated with a heavy jab, with the final one pushing Rudra through the floor from the sheer force of it, resulting in another explosion. A large crater had formed where the blue demon lies at the center, alongside Dante, who stands above him. He was about to deliver the final blow when a nearby explosion halted his movements. Merely sparing a glance at the direction, his eyes soon turned wide upon recognition. That’s where you crashed.
His fist loosened as the memory flashed in his mind again, unconsciously letting Rudra go as he slowly made his way towards the direction of the building. What was he doing? He should… He should’ve gone after you… At least get your body before that building gets demolished. Dante mumbles your name as he reaches out, wing unfurling as he prepares to fly—
Until he turns around just in time to get body slammed by Rudra once again, sending them flying to the skies.
Annoyed, Dante strikes the demon’s back and kneed his stomach as he struggled to break free from his grip. Surprisingly, Rudra endured it as he aimed their descent to the ground. That, or…
The second his fist landed on Rudra again, his transformation got undone, revealing a human hand. Soon after, his whole body reverted back to what it once was, leaving Dante vulnerable to the demon’s attacks. Rudra managed to grin upon finding his power diminishing. “Losing control over a human?”
“Still only a half-breed.”
Seeing Rudra planning on doing a murder-suicide, Dante tried to struggle once again, mustering what was left of his demonic transformation from earlier to extricate himself from Rudra’s grip. Much to the surprise of the both of them, Dante was able to steer their direction elsewhere, crashing into a nearby building.
They must’ve broken through multiple rooms, as when Dante finally collapsed on a slab of concrete, debris filled the room, leaving little to no visibility. Rudra rose first, stumbling towards him as he tried to summon his weapon with both hands, before realizing his right arm was now missing. Resigned to his current circumstances, the demon instead tapped his shoulder. “Rabbit’s not here right now.”
“Would you like to leave a message—?” The moment the demon summoned his scimitar, a flash of orange lunged to his left, and a shockwave pushed Rudra to the wall. It was the demon’s cry in pain that urged Dante to sit up, hopefully to see the person who came to his aid and get away. But the sight made him stop, the ringing in his ears only made him focus more on the one fighting off Rudra.
Wait, what?
The figure is familiar yet foreign. Covered in soot and blood, they fought the blue demon with such a crazed frenzy that borders on berserking. Carrying a familiar sword, they manipulated fire like an extra limb as they cornered the blue demon. In mere minutes, Rudra was killed, and the person laughed at his expense.
It can't be… is it? There's no way that—
Rudra's sword asked to be taken in, which the person reluctantly obliged, ending up holding a scimitar in each hand. The sun shone just in time when they turned to his direction, and despite the shadow casting over their face, the recognition in their eyes was all Dante needed to confirm their identity.
“(Y/N)...?”
Your smile fell upon hearing your name go past his lips, visibly relaxing as you limped towards him. “Dante—”
But then your eyes went past him, to something in the air he couldn’t quite see. Suddenly, you clutched your head, crying in pain as you dropped your weapons. He can see you staring at him through the gaps of your fingers as he willed himself to stand up, reaching out to you in worry. To his surprise, however, you slapped his hand with a terrified expression.
“Dante… Don’t come near me…”
With a cry, your body tensed up and lunged at him.
