. . .
nancy wheeler was seen as a perfect girl. perfect family. perfect grades. perfect looks. everyone either wanted to be her or be with her. people desired her. especially steve harrington, the most popular guy in the entirety of hawkins, so she should be happy right? then why did everything feel so wrong?
it was another boring monday morning, with another pop quiz just minutes away. nancy was shuffling through a thick pile of revision cards as she quickly walked down the almost empty corridors. almost empty. nancy's body slammed right into something- or someone. the notes she made the night before fluttered dramatically around the wheeler girl as she fell flat on her back, a yelp of surprise falling from her lips.
"oh god, are you alright?" the person she bumped into crouched down and began to gather her revision cards hastily. "i'm so sorry."
nancy took a moment to process what just happened. someone she's never met before is apologising whilst picking up her cards for her, and she's just laying there like an idiot.
"oh no, god- no. it's my fault..." nancy began to help before she makes eye contact with the stranger. a soft smile is on her pink lips, yet a look of urgency and worry in their piercing eyes. she's captivating. "i'm nancy wheeler."
"pleasure to meet you, nancy wheeler." the two begin to rise off of the ground as the h/c haired girl hands nancy the rest of the cards as she gratefully takes them, glancing down at the question written on the paper as her eyes widen.
"oh my god- i'm late! i need to go, i'm so sorry. i have a test. i'm late." nancy grabs her bag from the floor and swings it over her shoulder. "thank you, i'm sorry, thank you. bye!" she begins to quickly walk down the hallway without a second thought.
nancy didn't even get her name.
. . .
she definitely failed. nancy, the girl who everyone believed was a genius, felt like she did terribly in the test. she was always so good at paying attention and keeping a focused mind, yet she couldn't stop thinking about the mysterious girl she bumped into only a few moments before.
"nance!"
a voice snaps nancy out of her trance. she now realises she's been standing in the middle of the canteen, holding her lunch tray- most certainly getting in the way of numerous people.
"oh- barb, hey." nancy finally replies.
"you okay?" her best friend nudges her shoulder with her own. "kinda zoned out there."
"yeah, yeah- i'm fine. usual table?" barb starts walking as an answer as nancy trails behind. the usual table was not empty as it usually was. someone was sitting there with their lunch tray placed in front of them, discarded and a book in their hand, the cover reading 'annie on my mind' by nancy garden. the person feels the presence of barb and nancy, and lowers the book, revealing their face.
"nancy wheeler. greetings and salutations."
it was the girl. the girl from earlier.
"oh wow." nancy's face breaks into a smile. "it's you."
"it's me, don't seem too happy to see me again, wheeler." she smiles back. "am i sitting at your table?"
"yes, you are." barb quickly responds, a hint of jealously coming out, making the girl in front of her close her book.
"apologises, i'll be on my wa-" she begins.
"stay!" nancy says awfully quickly, making the two girls turn and look at her. she realised the desperation in her tone. "if you want of course."
the e/c eyed girl slowly lowered herself back onto the seat as nancy does the same. barb on the other hand is reluctant. "i'll be back." barb whispers and turns away and leaves the canteen.
"did i do something wrong?" the girl, who's name nancy still didn't know, asked.
"oh- barb? no, she's just- um, barb. she gets weird around new people. it's not your fault. she does this all the time, like when i introduced her to steve." she was rambling and she knew she was rambling, yet her mouth wouldn't stop even though her brain was screaming at her to.
"steve?"
the girl's eyebrow was raised, a quizzical look on her face. "is that your boyfriend?"
"no!" nancy once again answered quickly. too quickly. "no- he's just my friend.” a beat of silence went by as nancy spoke again. "you never told me your name."
"you never asked." a trace of a smirk was on her face.
"well, i guess this is my way of asking you what your name is now."
"y/n l/n, just moved to hawkins." she stretched her hand out for nancy to shake as she accepted. y/n's hands were cold, a nice contrast to how hot nancy felt right now.
the simple touch made nancy feel like she was about to explode. why was she feeling this way? what on earth is going on?
eventually y/n let go of nancy's hand- much to her dismay.
"that's a nice name. it's pretty." the words flew out of nancy's mouth without realising.
y/n looked momentarily taken aback before returning the compliment. "not as pretty as yours." she was being sincere.
is this... flirting? it was simple yet it sent a small wave of butterflies in her stomach. nancy had been flirted with by many guys at school, but their idea of flirting always made her feel disgusted and appalled, even steve's flirting felt off... yet nancy's exchange with y/n felt right. so right.
. . .
the phone ringing in nancy's room nearly gave the poor girl a heart attack, she was once again lost in thought about y/n.
"hello?" nancy finally answered.
"hey, nance. it's barb." the voice responded.
nancy suddenly sat upright. "barb? are you okay? what happened at lunch?" what nancy told y/n earlier wasn't a complete lie, yes she did get all weird when she met steve and tommy h and carol, but she never walked off. not like she did today.
barb sucked in a shaky breath after a brief pause. "yeah, just fine."
"you sure?" nancy didn't believe her for one second.
barb hummed in response and silence ingulfed them once again. "the girl from earlier? what's her name?"
"y/n l/n. she's new. she's really nice, she would've loved her. maybe you can meet her properly tomorrow." nancy found herself smiling as she looked down at the small piece of paper that y/n had quickly scribbled down her number on before leaving for her next period.
barb was once again silent.
"barb?"
"did you see what book she was reading?"
"book?" nancy was too busy looking at y/n to even take notice of what book she was reading in the first place.
"the book she was reading in the canteen. 'annie on my mind'. do you know what it's about?" barb said, with a mild tone of disgust.
"no? i don't think i've heard of it." nancy responded, confused out of her mind. why did barb have an issue with a book?
"lets just say, people like us wouldn't read it." barb quietly responds.
"wait- what? what's it about?" nancy sat up even straighter.
"well- it's about two girls. annie and liza- and lets just say they're not exactly friends." she responds, scoffing.
"not exactly friends?" nancy questions. "do they hate each other or something?"
barb once again scoffs, "quite the opposite."
nancy was silent as she begin to wonder what barb possibly meant before it clicked. "lovers?"
"bingo. only queer people read that kinda stuff." barb says. "surprised no one's realised yet- like look at her, she's obviously gay-”
nancy hangs up.
. . .
weeks go by and nancy is still avoiding barb, hell- she's even been avoiding steve. the only person she talks to is y/n. only y/n.
after what barb said about y/n, nancy couldn't stop thinking about it, even thought it had nearly been a month. maybe y/n liked girls, it seemed like she did. she never talked about boys, but then again she never talked about girls. she only talked about nancy. only nancy.
in the short span of a month, the two girls had become as close as close can be. a few deep, dark secrets hidden, but that was all.
nancy laid back on y/n's bed in one of her oversized shirts that she had basically claimed now, humming along to the dexys midnight runners song playing on y/n's record player as the girl besides her reread the same book she always did.
'annie on my mind'.
by this point, nancy had read the book without anyone noticing. luckily, y/n had a spare copy that nancy borrowed for a night and then quickly put back the next day. nancy finished it in record time as she hid under her bed sheets. she couldn't stop reading. she was enthralled by it, yet deep down she was ashamed about reading it. something she admired about y/n was that she didn't care what others thought of her, nancy on the other hand- well, that was all she cared about.
after finishing the book, nancy felt a change.
"hey, y/n/n." nancy broke the silence as y/n hummed in response, still captivated by the book. nancy now understood why.
"why do you like that book so much?" nancy had a hunch, but she wanted an answer.
y/n bit her lip and closed the book after slipping her bookmark in. she rolled over so she was face-to-face with nancy. "well- it's just the representation i guess. every story is boy meets girl, boy becomes friends with girl, boy falls in love with girl. happy ever after. blah blah blah. but this? it's different, it's two girls instead, but then again you already knew that, didn't you, nance?"
she knew she took the book.
"well- um, i-" nancy stuttered out.
"i don't mind, really. keep my other copy." y/n nudged nancy and looked towards the spare copy on the shelf which nancy now realised she put it in upside down. "but- since you did read it, what did you think?"
nancy smiled and momentarily closed her eyes. "it was amazing, and unique, and just- wow."
"it's just relatable i guess, you know? two girls become friends and then their friendship blossoms into love and despite what everyone else says, they promise to stick together and stay true to their feelings." y/n's eyes didn't leave nancy's.
"relatable?" nancy whispers, even though they were the only two in the room. the only two in nancy's world.
"yeah." she whispered back as nancy swore she saw her eyes flicker down to her lips.
nancy could feel her heart pounding against her chest as y/n slowly began to lean in as nancy did the same.
it was sweet. she tasted sweet. y/n's left hand moved to cup nancy's face and nancy moved her hands to her waist. eventually, she pulled away and when nancy opened her eyes- y/n was already looking at her. "wow."
"wow indeed."
"so you... you know-" nancy began.
"like girls? yeah." y/n nodded.
nancy licked her lips as she traced y/n's face with her pointer finger. "i don't know what i am."
"and you don't have to know. you never have to figure it out, and no one can tell you what you are besides yourself." y/n smiled as nancy's heart sped up once again. "take your time. we can continue whatever this is- or we can stop, it's all under your control, nancy wheeler."
"i don't want to stop."
"then kiss me again."
so nancy did.
