My second showcase is in less than 10 days. I'm super excited and nervous! But I am definitely looking forward to this awesome opportunity. My pieces are starting to come together and it makes me that more excited! For those of you who don't really know my story, I thought I'd share it. Growing up art was always a part of my childhood and my mom was always encouraging me to be creative and I'm so thankful for that! I know most mothers encourage their children to be creative, but I discovered not only did I enjoy it, but I was pretty awesome at it! When I started college I knew right away that I wanted to be a Visual Arts major. Unfortunately, art became more of a chore for me and I began to lose confidence in myself as an artist. I felt constricted and that my art had to convey something extraordinary and look a certain way. So, I quit. Maybe that's how it was suppose to be. Couple years after college I met Sean, got married and had two beautiful children, yup, just like that! So, if you're a parent, you know how stressful this part of your life can be. I found myself pulling out the art supplies and doodling again. It became a time to de-stress; it was my "me time" and the kiddos naptime. I found my joy again, but I was still searching for my confidence. One day my best friend Kayla came upon some of my work and said, "You should be selling this stuff!" I was like, "Uh, yeah right!" Nevertheless her support and encouragement gave me the boost of confidence I needed. I began discovering more about myself as an artist and what I was capable of. I began dipping into several different mediums and I can now say I found my niche! The very first piece I sold was a ballerina in white charcoal. Most of my work is of the female figure and a mother and her child. I can obviously relate to both, which I believe is very important as an artist. Some of my inspiration has come from Edgar Degas, specifically his dancers. I also find photos that embrace the beauty and simplicity of a woman. I'm not sure what's more beautiful than a mother holding her child. Most of my work is mixed media with the combination of charcoal and oil pastels. My bold colors and flowing lines create my unique style. Though my work may not say anything extraordinary, I think the simplicity of it says a lot! Although this is just the beginning, I'm so happy at where my art is taking me! Not only am I doing something I love, but I am discovering more about myself and not just as an artist. That about sums up my story. I really do want to thank all of you who have taken an interest in my work, who have encouraged me with your generous comments and supported me by buying my art and coming to my first showcase. By the way, the showcase never would have happened, if my husband hadn't pushed me to submit my work! Thanks hon. One last thing, I promise! Please come out to my RAW showcase, June 18th at the Pourhouse in downtown Minneapolis. It's going to be a really fun night. It's from 8-1130. There will be fashion, music, film and of course visual art! I would love to see you there. Buy tickets online, no later than June 16th to help support me. Click on the photo here and it will send you to my profile. Thank you, thank you!
