I think the reason why I don't understand Sil is because I'm so focused on the survival aspect of it all, and survival can pretty much strip away who you are as a person, because in the grand scheme of it all, you are just trying to get through it one day at a time.

It's not that she's been left in the past, but her present has stripped her of who she was. The story isn't about her finding herself again; it's about persevering in a world that is trying to kill her. But at the core, it's not really a story if I don't have a profound character. And she's part of the main cast too, which makes it all the more important to know who she is.

I know more about how she tries to pretend it's okay. She's strong for others, and she's a protector. What matters most is ensuring everyone survives, not just herself. She tries to embody a walking virtue. To me, she doesn't yet feel like someone because she's pretending to be someone she's not.

And this could just be because I do not fully understand Jedi

But who is she in the quiet of it all? When she's alone? I could only imagine that if she stopped for a moment, she would fall apart. She is crumbling under the weight of knowing Jedi culture has been completely destroyed. There is no plausible future in her eyes.

Sil has no hope. She's afraid and scrambling to pick up the pieces if they are even there.

But perhaps I was looking at it from a different angle. There is a possibility I do know her, and that she is hidden beneath the virtue that Jedi stand for. That, for me, I have to strip away her title as a Jedi to unearth her person.

Actually, think about Sil Valdin, now.

A lot of her characterization is in the past. Her personality, her approach, her opinions. All of it. In the past.

It's not that she turned her back on the force after Order 66; it's that everything juicy about her is in the past. Everything that makes her who she is has been left behind. Sil is in survival mode, she's only trying to make ends meet, and hopefully not end up dying when the Empire comes around.

Like with Jedi temple guard training, she is a shadow. She's been trained to hide in plain sight. She's been trained to blend in with the crowd. Survival doesn't make room for personality or quirks. But maybe that's an excuse I'm telling myself, maybe this is just a convenient way out of trying to explore her character.

this is the best writing advice i can give, and it applies mostly to scifi and fantasy:

do you have a story, or do you have a concept ?

a concept can be super cool but you can't just talk about a concept, you need a chatacter to follow.

so take your concept, and ask yourself: how does a character get affected by said concept?

example:

Concept: Oh it would be cool if you could clone dinosaurs.

Story: A bunch of scientists and two kids are invited to an island where they cloned dinosaurs. The dinosaurs escape.

concept: What if a bad guy made a bunch of rings and used one to control everyone.

story: A young man imherits a mysterious ring from his uncle, but said ring is evil so the young man leaves in a dangerous mission to get rid of the ring.

Concept: What if you could travel through time.

Story: A teenager and a crazy scientist travel to the 50s where the teenager has to make sure his parents fall in love or he wouldn't exist.

Stories are about characters, first and foremost.

A very efficient way to find your story is to ask yourself: How can this concept make a character suffer?

And bam, a situation.

The next part is to get the character out of the situation. Have fun.

i have come to the realization that I do not know *who* Sil Valdin or Arcturus Black are which is debilitating in a way, since I have yet to discover what type of person they are I can't exactly move forward with their stories :/
