My next single “Sunrise” is out April 7th ☀️🌅☀️ The cover photo was taken shortly after my grandmother passed away when I was grieving, at Santa Monica Beach, where I grew up. Still struggling to comprehend living in a world without Wayne Shorter. He seemed immortal, ageless, never ceasing to amaze us with his genius, his artistry, whether as a composer, improviser, saxophonist, philosopher, poet, sage, film buff... I'm so grateful that I got to see him perform so many times, and meet him a few times. Whether it was his quartet with Danilo, Patitucci, and Blade (augmented by Imani Winds), duo with Herbie, his High Life band, with the Monk Institute, probably other shows I'm forgetting... So grateful to have been able to listen to his amazing records from so many eras. He truly evolved so steadily and beautifully, from Night Dreamer and Speak No Evil to ETC and The All Seeing Eye to his work with the Jazz Messengers, Miles, Weather Report, to Native Dancer, High Life, Alegria, 1+1, his live quartet album...the man left such a legacy for us all, and such an imprint on me, as both a composer and improviser, that it's hard to process that he's no longer on this planet. I woke up to the news of his passing and immediately starting crying as if I lost a family member. Thank you, Wayne Shorter. The world is a better place because of your life and music.
