Nasty Wizard Recordings (NWR) is a DIY label based in Beijing, China. The aim of our dark kvlt is to proliferate weird, evil, and nasty music as far and as wide as possible. We don’t care about industry labels, we don’t care about hype, and we don’t give a shit about profit margins.NWR was founded by Dann Gaymer (GUIGUISUISUI/ AWEH.tv), Michael Cupoli (Noise Arcade) and Will Griffith (Live Beijing Music). https://nastywizardrecordings.bandcamp.com/ [email protected]

“They describe themselves as ‘the best band in Beijing’ and there’s nothing in this album that makes me want to disagree with that proclamation. [...] One thing I really enjoyed about CAT AIDS was that even under all that intensive inventiveness, it really felt like the band was trying to make a statement and give a message through their music.”

Nasty Wizard Recordings latest release is the equivalent of somebody pulling down your pants in a crowded public place, whilst simultaneously squeezing lemon in your eye, and twisting your left nipple enough to make you scream like a sourly-pissed off macaque monkey: a split release between the greatest band in Beijing, CAT AIDS, and the sweetest smelling remix bandit in the known universe, DJ Urine. If you were contemplating ending it all and going to work in accountancy or something, don’t. Stay on at the pet shop, keep that stupid haircut, continue to put scissors in electrical sockets, because this tape is here.
https://nastywizardrecordings.bandcamp.com/album/cat-aids-dj-urine
On the A side, CAT AIDS. Where to begin? The house band of Nasty Wizard Recordings and the greatest band in Beijing and probably East Asia if we’re honest. First there was the space punk barrage heard on the split with Japan’s Go Tsushima, which pretty much redefined how must people considered music and put Beijing  on the map internationally for something besides bad air and cremated ducks. Then there was the CAT AIDS Christmas album, a totally original concept that revived the failing and stagnant careers of a host of nobodies whose songs CAT AIDS generously covered, in the process reinvigorating the spirit of Christmas for most of the world’s aardvark population.
On this latest release the most awesome band in the Chinese capital have done it again, this time reemerging as a three piece with the addition of virtuoso guitarist Meow Ze Bong (former session musician for INXS , Leo Sayer, and Bannanarama) enabling Gustav Von Klusterfuck (bass) and Percy Piss Wizard (drums) to take CAT AIDS into the stratosphere of intergalactic doom punk (sort of like if members of Motorhead and Witchfinder General teamed up with Brian Eno on the pretense of making music, yet instead consumed a shitload of horse tranquilizers and went around the neighborhood spray painting dicks on the side of parked cars). Lyrics on tracks such as ‘sugar APE’ and ‘Zen And The Art of Bad Manners’ range from love letters to the Beijing underground to body part transplants.
On side B Nasty Wizard Recordings is equally excited to have the master of shattered records and over abused styluses , DJ Urine. A time traveling sonic nomad, DJ Urine is an antidote to the Olympics of Boring that is a world filled with Macbook toting Barbie and Ken dolls masquerading as deejays. In comparison DJ Urine is that messed up kid next door who rips the limbs off of the pretty dolls and grafts them together to create bizarre creatures from your darkness nightmares. While all the hip kids are pissing around cutting up mp3s and half heartedly pasting them together under the pretense of post-modern art in the hope that someone will blog about them, DJ Urine is slicing up and smashing actual records and then randomly super gluing them back together AND then mixing them live, right in front of audiences. In short DJ Urine makes Girl Talk look like a monumental pussy/lazy nerd who flirts with distorting conventions, instead of actually smashing them round the back of the head with a baseball bat.
At the time of the writing it’s somewhat unclear where exactly DJ Urine is as he’s almost constantly on the road, playing basement noise shows, experimental happenings, and basically anywhere that’s open to something way out of the orbit of the average civilian’s concept of a turntablist. We’re talking half a dozen or more toy record players simultaneously spinning multiple Frankenstein discs, constantly blending and cycling through noise, psych rock, spoken word, jazz and godonlyknows what else in the twitch of an eye. The audience become the deejay as they pick out records and pass them to the demon mixmaster -- a brilliant piece of performance art and musical experimentation that you should witnessed in person if you ever have the chance. Until that time enjoy the feast of the single monster track DJ Urine contributed to this release, ‘Kosmos Bakelit’, an almost never ending stream of audio information that cycles through more genres than Ken Kesey had acid trips. It’s like tuning into a radio station built inside a tear in fabric of time and space.
The whole beautiful mess is to be found on a reels of magnetic tape produced within a grudge pit in Beijing, China. The original artwork by Chinese superstar artist Nan Guazi (responsible for the deliciously noise/doom laden split between To Die and Nahash also on NWR) pretty much features a shark humping a unicorn. Inside the tape’s booklet there is a special secret surprise, except it’s so small you’ll need a magnifying glass to read it or you’ll ruin your eyes trying to.
If you thought the Nasty Wizards couldn’t get any nastier you’d better believe the CAT AIDS/ DJ Urine split proves they’re just getting started.

Better Than A Glory Hole is a new series that aims to release an album a month in limited runs. The goal is quite simple. We would like to work with as many different people as possible because we believe there are many great musicians that deserve a chance to be heard. Why would we call it Better Than A Glory Hole? Because we at Nasty Wizard Recordings believe that it isn't harder to be better than a glory hole. Unless, of course, you like glory holes... We won't judge but others might.
Better Than A Glory Hole Vol. 1 features the incredibly fucking talented cat going by the name Percy Piss Wizard has been released. As today is Children's Day and Percy is only a 3 month old kitten, we have made this a double holiday. You're welcome again. No. Seriously. You don't have to thank us too much even though your life has probably been changed because of this. It's limited to 20 tapes, so don't be shy about getting one. We do believe that this is easily the best album to come out of Beijing this whole year so far.

Nasty Wizard Recordings, the most ghetto-tastic coven in Northern China, are struggling to hide the boners peaking out from underneath their robes on account of their first release for 2015: a split between Shanghai’s hi-priest of doom/black metal noise, Nahash, and Indonesia’s unstoppable fireball of DIY sonic destruction, To Die. As previously stated we’re trying our best to sheath our nerderific erections, we really are.
Check out a disturbing and suitably doomy promo right here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-ClfHfwTlE
First up on the gallows we have Nahash, a particularly murky offering out of the neon drenched over-caffeinated smog of Shanghai, where the pigs don’t fly, instead they float down the river. Nahash is in fact a project of one Laura Ingalls aka. Raphael Valensi of Acid Pony Club and Death to Ponies, also the producer to a bunch of bands and also the brains and the money behind Huashan Records, another macabre and purposely DIY label down Shanghai way (*swoon*). Nahash also utilises the visual talents of one Tina Sparkles, who like totally kills it when it comes to celluloid and digital. Like, for real.
Nahash has be known to also draw in the occasional other cat (picture the performance at Pair’s last show in an underground rehearsal room where Mike Cupoli of Noise Arcade fame was smashing the drum kit a hard as he could, while Adam Cah of The Other was literally throwing a smashed guitar into an amp, while Mr. Ingalls himself blasted out some deeeeeeep doom bass. Now imagine how that sounded.) To the point: the Nahash bit of this split is what you need in your life: it’s that extra spoon of doom in your black coffee after whatever semi-legal substances you imbued the night before, it’s the white noise between your ears when you lay down in bed at night, it’s the cat that gets under your feet just as you're about to descend a very steep staircase whilst carrying a box of artificial limbs.
Next up in the inquisitor’s boudoir is To Die, sometimes a band, sometimes one dude with a bunch of pedals, sometimes hardcore punk, sometimes hardcore noise, frickin’ awesome all the time ninety six percent of the time (and that DOES make sense.) To Die have probably put out more releases than most comic bookshop owners have had intimate nights at home with a box of tissues and an internet full of porn (eg. a lot) and there’s no sign of a drought coming from the To Die camp any time soon. It’s a constant (un)healthy stream of work from the mind, mouth, and finger tips of one Martinus Indra Hermawan (as he’s known on this release), a DIY demi-God in the Mecca of awesome that is Yogyakarta, Indonesia. And hey, he also runs a DIY label over there which happens to be handling the SE Asia production of this split. What a weirdo tea party this is turning out to be! Anyway, the To Die side of the split is exactly what those in known have come to expect from this project an assault of possibility mediative noise and broken signals, a beautiful mess for your twisted brain to try and decipher and make sense of.
The China, Nasty Wiz Biz, version of this split is available in tape format because when was the last time you went to somebody’s home and got excited about their iTunes library?Physical music, physical art, that’s where it’s at, and as it happens for this releases the Order of the Nasty Wizards enlisted the help of one Nan Guazi, a super talented Chinese visual art who lends her finely skilled hands to everything from photography, toy making, design, and painting. In this instance she lent us a suitably dark and gothic piece from her university days. There’s only fifty copies of this tape being produced (for now) so get one, put it on your shelf, and next time some one is snooping around your Awesome Stuff Collection reap the satisfaction of hearing them mutter “dafuck is this?”

Nasty Wizard Recordings are over enthusiastically high fiving themselves in celebration of their latest release, featuring Beijing’s psych-punk-garage duo Luvplastik and Seoul’s DIY wunder pop crusaders Nice Legs.  Taking two of the most exciting new bands rocking the capitals of China and South Korea and putting them on the same tape is an act of dark wizardry at it’s best and that’s exactly what the Nasty Wizard has done.  On the one hand we have rock revival, psych punk two piece Luvplastik who have been tearing Beijing a new one over the past year. On the other we have the irresistible Nice Legs, who’ve entranced Seoul with their ability to melt hearts with sickly sweet vocal melodies and at the same time get bodies writhing in Energizer- bunny-powered-by-uranium energy.  Two examples of lo-fi wizardry from East Asia, thrown onto magnetic tape reels and polycarobinate disks, packaged with a double sided zine with interviews with the bands, and a mini zine from each band which when you put together you get a super slick designs by Beijing based artist Anya Chalina.
