pandora:
Natalie was forever the missing half of Pandora, and not a day went that she ever questioned it. How could she when the dark skinned beauty so equally balanced her out? Natalie constantly proved that Pandora very rarely thought through the consequences to her actions and instead offered a solid plan in place of it that would quiet down the blonde’s need to constant freedom inside of the school. The walls often felt overbearing, the spaces far too small, and it was too much for her to deal with but her friend always seemed to know the perfect solution that would make everything feel easier for her to handle.
At the end of the day Pandora knew she had her best friend wrapped around her fingers. She knew that if she so much as asked her friend for anything that it would come true because Natalie would do anything to make sure she did. It wasn’t what solidified their friendship though. That was the late nights of Natalie talking her out of a nightmare. Or whatever else the girl ever needed. She constantly had her back.
Pandora moved to her own trunk grabbing a change of clothes to wear to town now that they were officially ditching classes for the day. “I mean it’s almost as if we’re practically the same person though.” She pointed out as she changed into a comfortable dress before spinning around to look back at her friend again, “They’re still absolutely beautiful! How dare you insult them,” It was a teasing joke as she dropped back onto the foot of Natalie’s bed. “We can still be beautiful if the other is just as beautiful.”
Tumblr media
Devastated as Natalie had been at first to be sorted into Hufflepuff, instead of joining her brother in the dungeons, her years in the badger den proved better than she could have expected. It gave her a better chance to prove herself, and she had. But more than that, she had found friends that never seemed to have a hidden agenda, Pandora included. Of course not all the snakes were that way, but Natalie had heard enough stories from Declan to know what tended to happen in that common room. She did miss it sometimes, always curious about what may have happened had she also been sorted into Slytherin. But she didn’t dwell on it now as much as she had once done; having canary yellow emblazoned onto her robes was like a badge of pride, one she never wanted to regret.
Sometimes she still wondered if maybe there had been a mistake. As happy and as well as Natalie seemed to fit into Hufflepuff, sometimes she saw Pandora and the others in their dorm and wondered if there was an anomaly. They all seemed so genuine and while yes, Natalie Dupont prided herself on her personality, it was different. She had expectations and weights to live up to in a way none of the other badgers seemed to want to. Yet Pandora was always there, a reminder that sometimes she took things too seriously. That she could still be who she was meant to be, without constantly needing to live up to the expectations before she was even of age.
“Well, of course.” She spoke in a laugh, it unclear which part the words were directed toward. But really, it could have been any of it, and in a way it was meant to be. Glancing toward the blonde on her bed for a moment, Natalie lifted her wand and sorted out her reckless bedhead and finished changing from her pajamas. “Shall we?”

aurora:
A chuckle escaped her lips. “And Binns is still Binns. He’s quite uncomfortable to talk to. I always end up looking through him instead of at him and that is quite rude when talking to another professor. I honestly avoid him when I can,” Aurora admitted, finding herself more and more comfortable as conversation went on. Aurora couldn’t let herself get comfortable though, not now. The truth was, Aurora didn’t know Natalie and based on her family and blood status, Aurora could only make assumptions - but based on those, she wasn’t about to let her guard down too much. “I’m not an idealist, but I do have a small bucket list that involves visiting all the Wizarding Schools. Learn all the history behind them all. Maybe I can convince Walden to be my traveling mate so I can cross that off my list.”
Oh, she was in trouble now. How could she be stupid enough to say such things in front of a pureblood? And a likely Death Eater at that. Voicing opinions about creatures with little power was not something well behaved women did and Aurora had just gone off on a tangent. Natalie’s response surprised her though, so much so that Aurora couldn’t even hide the shock on her face. Was there more to the woman in front of her than what she had assumed already? Well, apparently. Aurora could tell those were not comments to be said outside of these walls, to anyone but the two of them in this private conversation. “Oh, well, I don’t see much point in it either. I can’t say I’ve ever been close to any creatures like yourself, I just know positive reinforcement works much better than any kind of torture or cruelty. Other than that, my opinions vary. Still, I think it’s silly to hold such judgement over me for such things. I understand I’m a half-blood and not to be trusted and everyone seems so interested in that,” she looked pointedly at Natalie, knowing that was the only reason she was invited over that afternoon, “but, in all honesty, I’m actually quite boring. Just a school teacher.”
Tumblr media
“Does anyone really know how long he’s been a ghost professor? Surely he can’t be older than Dumbledore.” Natalie said with a small laugh, recalling all of her encounters with Binns growing up. History of Magic was one of her favorite classes, no denying that. But she couldn’t fault Aurora, or anyone else for that matter, for keeping their distance. Any personal time spent around him had always made her a bit uncomfortable, in a way her father’s business partners never had. Maybe she was better used to dealing with men than those who had never found peace after their demise. Surely her brother’s passing her seventh year had done nothing to help her attending that class in particular, constantly wondering if Declan was wandering as a ghost somewhere. And if he was, why had he never come find her? “That would be wonderful, I have to say I’d love to see them all at some point. I met a girl once, related to Newt Scamander himself; through marriage of course, she was his great niece but she had nothing but good things to say of Ilvermorny.” Of course, Isabella Kowalski was someone that didn’t enjoy the public eye. But it had been known she came to visit the Dupont business, there was no harm in mentioning her in passing.
Even if not for the look of obvious surprise that crossed Aurora’s face, Natalie knew she would have said something unexpected. In her society it was strange to come across anyone that didn’t look down on magical creatures like the elves, and she had always known that. While her parents had never directly been cruel to them, their response to the family’s staff wasn’t nearly as generous as her brother’s had been. In an attempt to be more like him, she had taken to responding much in the same way. “Oh, they’ll all judge for one reason or another. I get ridicule for my sorting in school no matter how smart I am.” Natalie shrugged, shaking her head quickly at the insinuation. “Aurora, please don’t take this the wrong way but I don’t care much what you blood status is. One of my dearest friends is a half-blood herself, my brother’s was as well. I don’t hold as much weight in purity as you might believe.” Truthfully, she thought it was rubbish, stupid and unnecessary. But that was something to keep hidden, especially as a Death Eater no matter if not all of them were pure. She wanted to protect her way of life, not end others simply for existing. Not that anyone ever believed that, but within the walls of Declan’s sanctuary with a woman who didn’t seem keen to go sharing secrets, she didn’t mind.

gilderoy:
“I’m a busy man,” He happily admitted. “My fans and upcoming projects demand most of my attention, but I’m always willing to make time for an event like this, especially when it’s for such an important cause.” Even if a more highly anticipated event fell on the same night as the fundraiser, it was always his plan to make at least an appearance that evening. “Only a heartless person would turn down the opportunity to help bring attention to it. Proper medical attention is something that many ill people simply can’t go without, you know.” Though the rebuilding of St. Mungo’s was certainly something Gilderoy supported, his honest motivation in that night was to bring more attention to himself, as he knew the guests of the event would be wealthy in not only money, but in social influence as well. He knew Natalie would be in attendance that night, yet she was low on the list of people he expected to converse with. The seemingly constant empty place by her side reminded him of the reality of death, which he preferred to remain ignorant to. Unfortunately, like with many things he did in life, he found himself too far into the situation to escape.
He smiled at her desire for surprise, albeit warned her of his plans in fear of displeasing her. “I’ll get you a glass of wine, then. I’m not drinking much else tonight, myself. Do you like white or red?” With a promise to be back before she could feel lonely, the man went off in search of a roaming waiter who could bring him what he wished, and returned to Natalie a few minutes later with a glass of wine in each hand. “The service here is nice. It’s much easier to get a drink from a waiter here than it is to get one at a pub,” He commented. Then, fearful that the remark made him sound too rugged in such a proper setting, he added, “That’s why I’ve given up on them.”
As was part of their deal in exchange for a drink, Gilderoy requested how she had been since they had graduated. “You look great. You look like you’ve grown up, I mean,” He said. It still felt odd to compliment Declan’s sister, even if the said man was no longer around to make it so. “I suppose we all had to, with everything that’s going on…” While he had never been one to willingly speak about the war, the difficult decisions and immense pressure he felt from in within the last month made him understand a bit better why others seemed to never speak about anything else. “It’s a good thing what you’re doing here tonight. Sometimes I think all the world needs is a fine glass of wine and some good company.”
Tumblr media
“I can imagine so. As it happens, I’ve heard many of my guests sound rather excited you’re here. None quite as much as me, of course.” Natalie’s smile was genuine, even if she felt a pang. Those were such a part of her, it was had to remember what she felt like before. She couldn’t help wondering what Declan would say if he were here, seeing Gilderoy’s success and what had become of him. Part of her, the half desperate to believe her brother had been what she always thought, told her she already knew the answer. But the truth of the matter was, Natalie had no way of ever being certain, and dwelling on it (especially in such a public setting, where she was the hostess) wouldn’t do any good. “Really, I’m happy we’ve had the success so far that we have tonight. Having you here as an endorsement only helps, of course, I do hope you’re enjoying yourself.”
“White wine would be perfect, thank you.” Natalie smiled. She had never been a big drinker, nor she she think that she ever would be. In school, alcohol had been something that her classmates would sneak in, and as an adult, the only difference was that none of them hid it now. But Natalie herself had never seen the appeal; it all tasted disgusting to her, to say nothing of how it would take away her self control. To some, she knew that was the appeal-- yet there were few things quite as terrifying to the Dupont heir as not being in control of herself. She had too many secrets, too much that couldn’t afford coming to light. As he returned, she offered her polite thanks, taking a sip. Even if she didn’t enjoy alcohol, this was a social event; here it was allowed. “I would hope so, we’re paying them well.” The open bar had been Orion’s touch, something Natalie could admit she may have overlooked.  It was strange to hold up a facade around Gilderoy, someone who had been so present while she grew up. The polite, perfect Pureblooded hostess was a disguise she could wear well, but it felt strange. He had known her once, before. Though to his merit, she supposed, it was fair; half the time Natalie wan’t even sure she knew who she was anymore.
“Thank you.” Was all she could think to say, her smile remaining in place. Accepting compliments had always come easily, been bred into her. “Well, I am twenty now, to most I think that’s grown up, even without all that’s happened.” Her tone remained light, but the weight in her words was there. She knew better than to speak of war in public, surrounded by so many people, the mark on her arm tingling from where it was always hidden. Even so, Natalie had a feeling he would know what she meant. Losing Declan forced her to mature whether she was ready or not. “I’m almost appalled nobody felt the need to do it before. After all, St. Mungo’s is our hospital, it’s our responsibility to respect what they do.” They sounded like they were only words, but she believed them. The attack on the hospital had been one of the few times she hadn’t agreed with Voldemort. “Though you are once again right about that. Good company is all we can hope for sometimes, thankfully tonight there seems to be plenty of it.”

pandora:
Pandora knew that her friend was often annoyed with how intuned to each other they seemed to be, but Pandora loved it. She didn’t have any experience with siblings herself so she always viewed Natalie as that connection in her life. Or it could have been because of the amount of times that the other girl had saved her from being in trouble. It wasn’t that the blonde was necessarily trying to create trouble for herself, but it was all too easy for her to get stuck in her own head and distracted by the world outside of the classroom. It’s where having someone so in touch with her came handy because Natalie always had her back and made sure to keep the damage to a minimum at the very least for her. It all evened out in the end.
She could have always gone out on her own without dragging her friend into it, but she knew that later in the day she’d have to deal with the repercussions of Natalie’s sleep schedule being off. It was better to deal with the sleepy version of her friend if you asked her. If Natalie was going to miss classes anyways she might as well miss for a better reason than sleep, and what better way than enjoying the beautiful sunshine?
“I could go to the forest some other time I suppose, a butterbeer sounds like something that I need right now. What about you?” She asked reaching over to tug teasingly on her friend’s hair, “I always miss the curls. You’re way too pretty for it to be fair.”
Tumblr media
If in relationships there was a head and a heart, then Pandora and Natalie traded the responsibilities by the week. More often than not, the youngest Dupont found herself being the responsible one in their friendship, but she didn't mind much. Having to take control and act accordingly was something she had been raised to do. And while she was charismatic and friendly, Natalie didn't have quite the same tendency to wear her heart upon her sleeve. They were a perfect balance, personalities always seeming to match what the other was lacking on any given day. Save for Declan, it was the only relationship to ever offer that sort of equilibrium. Natalie would be lying to ever say that didn't mean the entire world to her no matter how easy it was to pretend otherwise.
Her stubbornness in agreeing to Pandora's schemes was, at times, nothing more than a charade. While the brunette was always more reasonable and level-headed, she could still admit that at times, even she needed pulled out of her comfort zone. Her familial duties may have been to hold a certain image, but when in school that was easier to let go off. Formal meetings were so rare during the months that Hogwarts was in session, and none of Natalie's  small acts of rebellion were enough to cause concern anyways. Even if it did, she knew her brother would never allow her to be truly punished for it; watching Natalie act her age was something he always encouraged.
So whenever Pandora decided to have one of her unprompted moments of such, it was easy to go along with. Somehow, they always seemed to land directly when Natalie needed it most; because of that even if she was exhausted, the Dupont would go along with it. Any time spent with the other witch was never dull; no, they were best friends for a reason. “I'm always up for butterbeer, do you know me at all?” She laughed, rolling her eyes slightly at the accusations. “My morning curls are unruly as can be, you've seen proof of it yourself.” Natalie reminded her, readjusting her robes with one final glance before turning back to face Pandora. “Oh, shut it, you're beautiful.”

pandora:
Pandora knew all too well about her friend’s late night escapades. Not that she thought much about it. After all she couldn’t imagine being separated from a sibling by something as small as being in a different house. She did what she could in order to cover for her friend if anyone came looking around for her. Whether it was straight up lying, or just giving half truths depending on the situation. Where’s Miss Dupont? In the kitchen fetching a snack, we are growing girls after all. Was an all too often half truth she fed to the professor.
Now though she was selfish and knew that really she should be letting her friend either get some rest or go to their lessons. But it had been too long, a few days, since she felt like they had really spent anytime together and honestly it was beyond unacceptable to the girl that they went so long without each other. Standing up quickly she walked to her friend’s trunk to find some clothes for her to wear.
“Well I was thinking we could sneak into the forest. I’m sure there’s a beautiful clearing where we can enjoy the peace and quiet of the day. Unless you have a thought?” Pandora asked curiously looking up with a raised eyebrow.
Tumblr media
She was painfully transparent, and she knew it. Her late nights out with Declan weren't ones that were easily hidden from her friends, particularly Pandora. That was both the benefit and the bane of being so connected to her, it was always easy to pick up on what each other was up to. Whether it be school trouble or rule breaking, or any of the other vast extent of things.  Had it not been for Pandora, Natalie could only imagine how many detentions she may have faced for constantly being out of bed after hours. It was bad enough she was written up for missing classes every once in awhile, though that was always easily explained away. She was charming enough to get out of most trouble, unless Professor McGonagall was involved. Maybe that was why Natalie never chose to skip Transfiguration lessons.
Exhausted as she was, the young Dupont knew Pandora was doing her a favor. Staying in bed all day only served to feed into her behavior, to alter all sorts of sleeping  patterns and make it even harder for her to get up for classes. Habits like that were tricky to break, and with only two years left of school before the future Natalie had been bred for, well -- they weren't the sorts of habits she was looking to form now. Still, her eyes felt heavy as she sat up, curls standing up around her face in a way that almost resembled a mane. “Please tell me you sneaked something in that'll wake me up.” She sighed, tossing her heavy blankets back and reaching for her wand, taming her hair with the same charm she always had to use.
“The forest is called forbidden for a reason.” Natalie chimed, shaking her head as she began dressing. “You know I'm not a huge fan of being out there unless I have to. I was hoping if we're making this a thing that we can find some way to get out into Hogsmeade, but if you're really set on finding some clearing of the woods I suppose I can suck it up.”

June 9, 1979 The Leaky Cauldron Open
When her father had approached her with the idea, Natalie had been skeptical. She had heard rumors of how Polyjuice worked throughout her life and that, atop the reluctance to pretend she was someone else, was enough to make her skiddish. It wasn't that pretending would be a difficult feat for the youngest Dupont. Quite the opposite, if anything. Having the ability to pretend nothing had changed while also having lost the ability to feel years before was proof of that. Still, she knew how dangerous it would be. . .not that knowing that would get her anywhere. The bold mark that rested on her arm was proof that danger wasn't something she was allowed to be afraid of. So when Monsieur Dupont had pulled the girl aside, introduced her to his daughter, it seemed like she couldn't say no.
Isabella was a curious creature, but one that Natalie could see herself having befriended had things been different. Maybe that was why it had been so easy to get to know her, even if the blonde hadn't been thrilled by the idea of being used as a shield. She had gone along with it, leaving Natalie with enough of her hair to maintain potions for months to come before continuing on her business endeavors toward India. That had been her condition in the agreement: Natalie Dupont could use her, but only once she had left the country.
So once Isabella was gone, she decided to do what her father had asked. She wasn't entirely certain what was to be gained by impersonating her, but arguing with her family also wasn't something Natalie wanted to do. So she had ducked into a Muggle bookstore, hiding in a bathroom to take the potion. Once it had settled, and she had adjusted, she stepped back into the busy streets. In the distance she could see the Leaky Cauldron, visible only to magical kind. It wasn't her particular taste, but she stepped inside anyway, doing her best not to wince at the bland decor as she sat down and ordered a butterbeer, let alone at the change in accent. “I haven't ever had one before -- they're not really a thing in America.” While she wasn't sure Isabella hadn't experienced butterbeer, she knew it wasn't entirely a lie from family stories.
