Blood what???
A funny story from placement concerns a blood pressure machine. This particular blood pressure machine is free for customers to use in the store to measure their blood pressure (duh). The machine is located directly in front of the dispensary and is fully visible from all aspects of the dispensary. On a particularly hot and busy day in the pharmacy with 3 other pharmacists present doing stocktake, a couple of girls walk in. One girl drops off a script which i collect. While this happened her friend stands in front of the blood pressure machine. The girl who had the script says something about hair dyes and walks down the aisle towards the hair products leaving her friend in front of the machine behind. Not wanting to be left behind she calls out "Wait up. I am just taking my blood temperature!". The moment we all heard this we all paused for a moment. After the girl had rushed towards her friend, oblivious to her mistake. One pharmacist repeats that phrase while shaking his head. Although this seemed rude that we all had a giggle at that poor girls mistake. Just to clarify the situation. We were all tired from being swamped with scripts during the day and were all a little tense at that moment. That mistake made us relax a bit. So thank you anonymous girl for lifting my spirits a bit when I was dead tired.

Confusion
Something that I remember vividly from my clinical placement was the moment my normally placid and jovial supervising pharmacist get mad. This all stemmed from a chance encounter I had with a customer. My supervisor wasn't mad at me but at the illogical prescription presented. A customer caught my eye as i was stocking the dispensary. I asked if i could help and the lady enquired if i spoke vietnamese. I nodded and she presented me with a medication box. Initially my thought was that she had scripts on file until i saw that the label was from another pharmacy. The lady then explained that she was pregnant. She wondered if this medication that she had taken just recently would affect her pregnancy. Unsure i told her to wait as i consulted my supervisor. I knew something was wrong when my supervisor asked what 'HE' wanted when i presented the box to him. I explained the situation and his face changed. He bluntly told me that the lady shouldn't be taking this medication as it was for males, specifically for prostrate and bladder conditions. To confirm this he searched up "Tamsulosin HCl" and shook his head. He told me to tell the lady that she should stop the medication immediately. I passed this on and the customer again asked if this would affect her pregnancy. Again a consultation with my supervisor and i returned to reassure the lady that it would be fine if she stopped the medication. Out of curiosity from my supervisor and myself i asked why the doctor prescribed this medication. She told me that she had suffered from kidney stones and was given this from her doctor. Maybe there was some kind of miscommunication between the lady and her doctor which caused this mix up. Or maybe tamsulosin can also be used for kidney stones in females? The second assumption is highly doubted by both my supervisor and myself. Either way this situation caused the supervising pharmacist to becone irrate and question the doctor's education (brain).

Clinical Placement
This past week I just finished my clinical placement at a community pharmacy. I have to first say that the pharmacists who took the time to teach me were not only patient but the most lovely people I have ever worked with. At this particular pharmacy there were 4 pharmacists and they all taught me different aspects of being a community pharmacist. At first I was unsure and uneasy about my presence there but they welcomed and encouraged me. Sounds like I am waffling but I really am in awe of these people who are so positive and confirmed for me that being a pharmacist is what I really want to do. I would like to share my experiences with you but not in this post. This post is entirely about the people who I admire so much. The people that i worked with for one month, 9-5 monday to friday. One of the pharmacists told me that everyone in the pharmacy was part of the family and included me as well even though I was ever going to be there temporarily. This touched my heart and made me feel like i belonged. I have always had a problem with fitting into groups and this comment made me happy. Call me simple but thats what i needed to boost my confidence. Along these lines another person asked me whether i had asked the manager if i could work there for my internship. I replied that i hadn't and before i could justify my response, they said i should. Did they really want me to stay or was it just a generic comment to make conversation? Either way this confirmed to me that the people i worked with were so nice that it is hard to believe that this whole experience was real.

EXAM STRESS
It's around that time of year when students really start to knuckle down and study for the all important end of year exams. Well, only those who want rosy futures will knuckle down while the rest are carefree or nonchalant about this whole business.
As a master's student I guess that it is my own damn fault that I chose to go through such torture each and every year (for the past 7 years including high school). During the year I am nonchalant and get through the work slowly and steadily, taking breaks when holidays roll around and extending them just that extra bit. Now when exam season is upon me, I find myself in that wondrous place of stress and anxiety as I attempt to cram all of the knowledge bestowed upon me by my professors into my brain. Then when this ordeal is over everything I know instantly disappears like a magician's assistant during a performance only to reappear in the darkest corners of my nightmares.
But as a veteran at exams, I have a system. Figure out which exams are first, focus on them and then once its over focus on the next one. This is all well and good if you have exams spaced apart. Not when you have 3 exams back to back and they are the hardest conceptual subjects you've ever taken. That means that sleepless nights and despair are in my immediate future. Thinking about all this is making me want to hurt myself. Oh wait, I already am with my constant head banging about why I chose these subjects.
The only upside that I can see is that if i do well enough, I don't have to repeat this ordeal and can enjoy my summer break. Also at the end of the day, the reason why I chose to do this was so that my future would be better. And I have a lot of interest in the field I am studying.
FYI my chosen field is Pharmacy. That means that I don't stop learning after I finish my degree but keep doing it for the rest of life. This is all thanks to the miracles of science and technology.
So please next time you go to a pharmacist. Be nice and patient. Our heads are filled with information and we are not computers. Give us a bit of time to boot up OK?
