On June 5, trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire will release on the tender spot of every calloused moment, an arresting new quartet album which presents 11 new original compositions featuring his long-time bandmates pianist Sam Harris, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Justin Brown. The album—his fifth for Blue Note Records—is available for pre-order now and will be released June 5 on CD and digital formats with a vinyl release to follow on August 28. Ambrose Akinmusire follows his acclaimed, genre-busting best- of-2018 manifesto Origami Harvest with another visionary statement on his new album on the tender spot of every calloused moment, which finds the trumpeter examining blackness on an uncompromising set of modern jazz laced with a heavy feeling of the blues. The album presents 11 new compositions by Akinmusire and features his quartet with pianist Sam Harris, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Justin Brown with guest vocals from Genevieve Artadi and Jesus Diaz.

The "Mr. Roscoe" in the title alludes to the venturesome multireedist and composer Roscoe Mitchell, founder and steward of The Art Ensemble and a 2020 NEA Jazz Master. Akinmusire first met him two years ago, when Mitchell was still the Darius Milhaud Chair of Composition at Mills College in Oakland. They convened at Mitchell's house, improvising as a duo and then playing through some of Mitchell's music. (They later performed a quartet concert at The Lab in San Francisco.)

Akinmusire — speaking from his home in Oakland, where he returned in 2016 after three years in Los Angeles and a decade in New York — tells NPR Music that he was humbled to witness Mitchell's dauntless commitment to discovery. "It was an amazing experience to see someone at that level, and an older musician, still searching," he says. "So that tune is based off some of the initial conversations that we had on that day that I met him."

While her more recent work may have been a bit tamer than some of her prior escapades, Gaga showed her fans the kind of ride they were in for in her video for "Stupid Love." To further prove that she would be flexing her creativity on the album, Mother Monster showed fans the cover art of Chromatica, depicting the singer in a Mad Max-style post apocalyptic getup.

Complete with razor-sharp claws, heels made of knives and tusks, and the dramatic sine logo that has permeated her promotion materials for the new album, the official artwork showed Gaga fully embracing the avant-garde style that she's since become synonymous with.
