Chapter one of the book I am writing, feedback is appreciated
One might think that you wouldn’t need to do anything important on a nice Saturday night in December, but that was not the case for me. Swimmers were lined up as they prepared to dive into the pool. Today was a swim meet, where swimmers would race and get their swimming times. I pushed myself through the water with a final stroke, finishing my lap.
I was not very good as swimming, probably because I did it for the sole sake of staying fit and healthy. Also because I’m sort of a science nerd. I know, it's kind of embarrassing to be a 13 year old nerd. I popped out of the water, gasping for air. In order to go faster, you have to breath less. The guy who kept the times muttered something but I wasn’t paying attention. I pulled myself out of the pool easily and started towards my things. The cold air had everyone shivering and huddling in their towels, but I was never affected much by the cold.
“Hey, what time did you get?” Someone asked. I turned around and saw my friend, Araline.
Araline was an Asian girl at my school, although not many boys liked her. They said that she was “too shy” because she had refused to go to parties. I however, on the other hand, had always had a crush on her since 5th grade. She beautiful long brown hair and hazel eyes. Her face had soft features that made her look like a flower that you would crush if you touched it. She wasn’t that much taller than me, and I was a little shorter than average for my age. I suddenly realized that Araline was in the middle of something.
“ - listening to me?” She asked
“Oh, I wasn’t paying much attention when it was announced,” I answered.
Araline patted me on the back as she sighed sweetly. She always scolds me about how I’m not paying attention to the things, which was pretty much a hundred percent accurate. I headed for the showers and Araline followed shortly after. After taking a short and refreshing shower ( in different showers of course, I’m not a pervert like Conner), we walked out of the swimming pool and headed towards the crowded parking lot. It took me a while to find my parents among the midst of the sea cars.
“See you next week, alright?” Araline said as she departed for her car.
I plopped into my own car and my parents started driving home, the sky turned to a dark color, with hints of red. That’s weird, it normally doesn’t rain much or in our city. The car skirted to a stop as we pulled up to the driveway. I closed the car door and went into the house. I was instantly blasted with the warmth of our house. My parents were right behind me and were carrying groceries.
“I saw you with that girl again Natou,” my mom says as she sets down her bag of potatoes. Oh yeah, I forgot to say that my name was Natou, which is really weird and my parents probably thought it was one giant joke.
Pretending that I did not hear her I turned around to hide my blush. Every time I make any contact with a girl my mom would do that. I quickly climb up the stairs and proceeded down the long hallway and into my room. I turned on my pc and started to load up an MMORPG (For your information, it is sort of an open world RPG, and RPGs are role playing games). I called up my best friend Conner and asked if he wanted to play with me.
“Bro you wan’t to play some some games right now?” I asked with a sigh.
“Sure, just make sure that you don’t take all my loot this time, Natou.” He said with a laugh from over the phone.
Conner was a nice white guy, although he reads and talks a bit too much. He mostly reads wilderness survival books, since he and his dad go backpacking and camping all the time. They would leave for a week then come back looking like cave men who just discovered fire for the first time. I met him in 6th grade, when he accidentally tripped and spilled his orange juice all over the popular girls, absolutely drenching them from head to toe. Being the pervert he his, he purposefully wiped the girls with towels and it became awkward once he came and sat next to me. Bored to death, we started chatting and discussing video games to pass the time. Soon, he gradually became my best friend.
“Hey Natou, something weird is happening at place. The sky’s turning all dark and red.” Connor said through phone once we finished the game.
“The same thing is going on on my end as well. Thats strange, we live pretty far apart.” I stated. Conner and I lived far apart, seeing as his parents are divorced, he has to go back and forth between living with his dad and his mom. Right now he was living with his dad who is significantly further away than his mom.
Suddenly, I was flung to my side as the floor shook and the phone flew right out of my hands. Getting in a crawling position, I sat up and groaned. The furniture in room were all completely broken as they smashed into the wall. My ears were ringing as I steadied myself and got up. I quickly went to pick up the phone and Connor was practically shouting from a feet away.
“Go get your survival bag Natou,” Connor instructed, “I told you to always have it ready! I’m already leaving the my city and heading towards you. Be ready so that I can pick your family up.” Being the survivalist he is, he always lectured me on the importance of survival supplies. He helped me pack all the thing I could possibly need in the wild.
I could hear Conner shuffling around over the phone as I crawled out of my room and made a beeline for the hallway cabinets. I pulled out the survival bag and put on the thick baggy clothes, a sweater, and also a full suitcase of rations. At this point you may think I’m over doing it, but one time Conner and his dad were stranded in an isolated hiking trip, and the only reason they survived was because of the insane amount of rations they brought with them. They had to live off of dried and canned foods for a whole month before someone found them.
“Hey Eason, are you still there?” Conner said from the other side of the phone, “You need to make sure you have tools to survive in case you get stranded”
I grimaced at the thought of dying, before returning to the task at hand. I slowly and carefully climbed down the long staircase and grabbed a club from my dad’s golf bag. My dad used to play a lot of golf, but now he doesn’t since its gotten so cold. I used the club like a walking stick and went outside the door, and what I saw made me gasp in fear.
