Happy St. Patrick’s Day from our green moray eel... who actually isn’t green! ☘️. . Green moray eels are actually brown and covered in slimy, yellow mucus. The combination of the yellow over the brown make them look green to our eyes. The mucus is a protective coating + helps prevent them from parasites. . Check out our FB page for a look at Thomas, our green moray eel, on his recent visit to the doctor!#AquariumFromHome #VirtualVisit #GreenMorayEel — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/3d8AJ1i

Hello everyone, In a precautionary move to protect visitors, staff, volunteers, and animals amid concerns of the COVID-19 outbreak, we will be temporarily closing the Aquarium and suspending public programming and events for a minimum of three weeks. While there have been no reported cases of infection at the Aquarium, we do feel it is necessary to promote best practices and help protect the public’s health by limiting social interaction. We want to assure the public that we will continue to provide our animals with dedicated, professional care. There is currently a surplus of essential food and medical supplies on hand to ensure the animals continue to thrive. Additionally, the Aquarium will remain in constant touch with state, national, and international veterinary networks to monitor updates, and will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. During this time, staff will continue to work both on-and off-site, and a dedicated custodial crew will continue to disinfect the main building, Simons Theatre, and staff offices. Any ticket reservations will be honored for later once the Aquarium reopens. Until we return, we encourage you to follow us on social media for updates on our animals, educational content, behind-the-scenes views, and a look at the Aquarium staff that are working hard to protect the blue planet. For future updates, please visit: https://ift.tt/3cUlbhG Thank you for your continued support, New England Aquarium — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/33f3d55

Our sandpiper is all about #NationalNappingDay 💤 If you visit our Shorebirds Exhibit, you may see sandpipers like this one resting on one leg. This posture helps birds conserve both heat and energy. Birds’ legs have an adaptation called “rete mirabile” that minimizes heat loss. The arteries that transport warm blood into the legs lie in contact with the veins that return colder blood to the bird’s heart. The arteries warm the veins. By standing on one leg, a bird reduces by half the amount of heat lost through unfeathered limbs. — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/39BOvHR

#FunFactFriday Cane toads produce a poisonous liquid in the glands of their shoulders that helps protect them in the wild. While they play an important role as predators in Central America and South America, cane toads are an invasive species everywhere else. Even though they are fascinating, it’s important to prevent populations of invasive species from booming since they can out-compete local species for food and habitat. #InvasiveSpeciesAwarenessWeek — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/397SITa

We ain't "lion" when we say that lionfish are one of the most rapidly invasive finfishes in recorded history. During #InvasiveSpeciesAwarenessWeek, we feel responsible at the New England Aquarium to expose people to this problem so that we can learn more about its causes and prevent any further damage caused by lionfish and other invasive species. Check out January's edition of First Friday Facebook Live to get the scoop on invasive species like lionfish! — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/37XFcAb
