Gentle fingers brush over Wanda’s cheek, and the bloody cloth is set aside. Columbina hums quietly as she considers the question. Her chest pangs with the memories of days long past, but it’s bearable now, or at least moreso than it was when she was alone. 

“A few.” She combed her fingers through the soft black curls of Wanda’s hair and drew the other woman close to her chest. “It was beautiful. How I wish you could have seen it. The Festival of Fire, I taught you the dance, didn’t I, dear? To welcome in spring and new life.” 

Her eyes drifted shut as she called up the memories, dancing hand in hand with Seelie long gone now. 

“It would begin at sunrise. As the sun rose, so did the song and dance. The fields would come alive, sound and movement and life.” 

Wanda was like putty in Columbina’s hands. Each stroke of the Seelie’s fingers through her hair sent tingles travelling up and down her spine. Her ears drooped back in relaxation, her tail gently flicking too and fro as a purr rumbled from her throat. 

“How long would they dance?” asked Wanda, picturing the red and orange sun peeping over the horizon with a flood of gold through budding leaves onto the bodies of the dancers, all the bonfires roaring. “Did they have a special outfit?”

Columbina didn’t pause in her work, carefully wiping the drying blood from Wanda’s face. The cool, steady fingers wrapped around Wanda’s chin didn’t waver, but warmth sparked deep in Columbina’s chest, far away from prying eyes where even the gods couldn’t snuff it out. 

A soft smile, meant only for the two of them, touched her lips. 

“I know.” She tilted Wanda’s chin up, her gaze sweeping over the other’s face for any blood splatters she had missed- none of it Wanda’s, she determined with a small swell of pride. The warrior had come far in her training, and Columbina much preferred to stand back and marvel at her deadly waltz. 

A song would go nicely with it…

“It’s wonderful, isn’t it? Despite everything the gods tried to make it otherwise… here we are. Together.” 

Soft care and gentle affection was... rare. Those that had looked after her when she was small had never been given to it. Wanda was scary, after all. A product of something unknown. In Liyue she might have been looked on in favour as an adeptus, albeit a young one, but in Sumeru she was observed with academic intrigue or fear, and she’d never been sure what was worse. It hadn’t been until Max, and then Columbina, that she’d truly understood where she belonged in the world, and what she was. What one of her parents was.

The last of the blood peppering her face was wiped away, and Wanda smiled for her. 

“Do you have any more stories?” Wanda asked. “Of before we were mostly imprints.”
