New to the Fandom Guide to Jason Todd

Tragic Backstory Part I:

Living on the streets of Gotham after losing his parents to drugs and crime, pre-teen Jason Todd decides to steal the tires off the Batmobile. Bruce catches him and thinks it’s hilarious. After some fuss about reform school Bruce adopts him.

Tragic Backstory part II:

15 year old Jason Todd discovered that his mom wasn’t his birth mom and that his birth mom is still alive. He runs away to go find her and tracks her to Ethiopia where he finds out that she’s being black mailed by the Joker. He tells her he’s Robin and offers her protection, but she sells him out to the Joker instead. Joker beats him with a crowbar and blows him up, killing him. Sometime later he wakes up in his coffin and has to dig out. He is found wondering the streets of Gotham basically catatonic by Talia al Ghul who violently nurses him back to health and sics him on Bruce.

Nicknames and Aliases:

Robin- the second, he used the same costume as Dick

Red Hood- an old alias of the Joker’s that he’s made his own

Hood, RH- shortenings of Red Hood used in the field

Arkham Knight- alternative to Red Hood he takes in the video games of the same name

Red Robin: used for a short time when he’s in another dimension

Little Wing- used by Dick Grayson

The Angry Robin- refers to his more violent fighting style

Jaybird- mostly used by Dick Grayson and Roy Harper

Joyfire: Jason is often shipped with either of his outlaws team mates, but you’ll often see all three together, Starfire and Roy Harper. It’s on the edge of cannon?

ArtJay: Artemis is another of Jay’s outlaw team members. They co-parent a superman clone together and have kissed in cannon.

Talia al Ghul, mother of Bruce Wayne’s bio kid, found Jason when he was super out of it after he came back to life and dipped him in a Lazarus pit to heal him. She mostly acts motherly towards him, but they slept together in lost days, so its cannon.

People pair him with his main villain Roman Sionis (Black Mask) for whump

JayDick: Jason was constantly being compared to Dick Grayson all through out his time as Robin, and if that doesn’t fuck with your sexuality. Not cannon.

JayTim: Tim Drake and Jason kinda have an opposites attract vibe? Not cannon.

Things to Know

His bio parents were Willis Todd and Shelia Haywood.

Willis was abusive and went to prison at some point when Jason was little.

He had a dog called Sparky when he was real little.

Pre-Robin, he was mostly raised by Willis’s wife Catherine. She struggled with drug addiction and died from it eventually leaving Jason distrustful of narcotics in fannon.

Jason was on the streets after Cathy died.

He started smoking around this time.

There’s pretty good cannon evidence for him having been sexually abused at some point during his childhood, but it’s never been explicitly stated. 

He loved school but he got in fights (against bullies tho).

Barbara Gordon tutored him in math

He loves to read. Him and Bruce collected first edition books when he was Robin.

Fannon says that he looked up to Wonder Woman the same way Dick looked up to Superman

When he used excessive force as Robin it was always against abusers.

Consent is very important to him.

He’s drinking that respect women juice.

The Red Hood will reliably kill two types of people: rapists and people who hurt kids.

He’s attacked Tim several times and once shot Damain, which somewhat undermines the last point.

Jason had his mental faculties restored to him using a Lazarus pit, which drove him insane.

Afterwards Talia had him trained by assassins under her control. He killed them after he was done learning from them.

When he was fresh from the pit he almost killed Bruce by blowing up the batmobile.

He wanted Bruce to kill the Joker, but Bruce ended up hitting Jason in the throat with a batarang and leaving him in a building that was about to explode.

He’s often shown with a white streak in his hair from the Lazarus pit. 

Its unclear if the Lazarus pit healed got rid of his scars, some times it did, sometimes he has a scar from his autopsy which is hella metal.

He was a teenage crime lord.

He has curly hair he lets it get long enough.

Dick put him in Arkham once. Tim broke him out.

While in Arkham he’s seen reading Pride and Prejudice, so fannon confirmed it’s his favorite book.

He was a red head for a hot second.

He has a moral code, it’s just different than Batman’s.

He mainly uses guns and a specialized type of knife called a kris.

His helmet not only hides his face, it modulates his voice. (and he probably gets the least concussions out of everyone).

His helmet is rigged to explode (he can throw it as a last resort weapon).

His chest plate has tasers built in the nipples. 

He was a tentacle monster for a bit. Have fun with the TentaTodd tag on AO3.

He’s a good cook and he actually cleans up after himself (unlike most other Robins).

He’s good with languages and the humanities in general.

He can vomit on command.

He has a nickname for everyone.

Fannon says that he’s Alfred’s favorite.
