Vibes for Softly Tortured Characters
For the ones who make you want to wrap them in a blanket and also scream “JUST TALK TO SOMEONE.”
Always looks like they didn’t sleep (because they didn’t)
Talks like they’re about to say something else, but never does
Constantly touches their sleeves/jewelry/lip, like if they’re not holding something, they’ll fall apart
Laughs too easily, but it never quite reaches their eyes
Over-apologizes for things no one noticed
Craves affection but flinches when they get it
Body language = trying to take up as little space as possible
Flashes of unexpected rage, like pressure finally cracking glass
Always says “I’m fine” in a tone that screams “Please ask again”
Cries alone, then wipes their face like it’s a secret
Feels safest in chaos because stillness feels like waiting for pain
Thinks being loved means being a burden
Cannot remember the last time they were truly, fully relaxed
Keeps people at arm’s length, but is the first to drop everything if someone else needs help
Treats their own joy like it's a luxury they didn’t earn

Ohhhhh, my bad! When I was looking at the eyebrow shape, it resembled her other eyebrows more so i thought it wasn't her mad eyebrows
It was brought to my attention that Yuumi had two more portraits added at some point (probably Valentine's Day?), so I went and found those!

Although I’m sure this is ancient, the creator of the wonder over joker mod figured out what goes on. The gradient is applied to the portraits as the game runs. It isn’t an image, but a shader within the game’s files. And the gradient changes between depending on character and character outfit. So there’s no one-size-fits-all gradient, unfortunately. Another modder created a python script that reads a json used for bustups that don’t have unique gradients and generates a gradient png for overlaying.
When you post the portraits, you mention adding a gradient on some of them on the faces. In the texture files, does this work as a single gradient mapped to every portrait of every character, or are there individual gradients made to clip to every character? I'm looking into making custom portraits and didn't know that they did seperate gradients from the portraits?
Honestly, I wish I had a more helpful answer, but I'm not entirely sure what the gradient itself looks like or how it works; I think it might be actually be two gradients, one of which is added directly onto the art, and the other of which is added within the actual game? Which sounds a bit convoluted, but here, for example:
The first is a Makoto portrait directly from the files; the second is the same expression (though different outfit, sorry) on the SMT wiki, from P5. You can see there's a drastic difference; the second one obviously has a gradient that highlights the face while darkening everything else. Makoto seems to be an instance where neither gradient is applied to the file portraits, so presumably both are applied in-game.
Another example, this time Closer in the open beta files vs. a screenshot of the same expression in-game:
The first Closer does have a gradient on her, by the looks of it probably a dark one coming up from the bottom of the image. But she still doesn't look quite the same as in-game; there's still that second gradient/color effect missing.
Adding one of the gradients directly onto the portraits seems to be a more recent thing, as well, considering the difference if you look back at portraits from the earlier beta tests:
Besides being redrawn, you can tell the first beta Motoha portrait (left) doesn't really have a gradient on her, while the open beta one (right) evidently does have that darker gradient coming up again (this is clearest on her hair). But I didn't add anything to her; it was already merged onto the pieces of her portraits.
So, all that said, I really wish I could be more help, because as an artist myself I'm also very curious about what gradient they use for these! But I really don't know, I just know that there seems to be more than one, or at least a gradient plus some extra effect that's added in-game. Sorry, anon!

To all my writers who have a tough time with smut terms and not knowing which ones to use, I have found the holy grail for us.
This reddit user took a poll of 3,500 people and went really in depth with asking their favorite terminology, along with actual pie charts on what the readers preferred to see in their smut.
Here's the direct link to the Google doc with all the info!

tbh in some cases calling my projects “wips” kinda feels like a joke, because it implies that it’s actually “in progress” rather than being a thing that plagues my brain every once in a while.
